All of this talk about strongest systems... was there a Systems contest announced or something? Or is this just speculation to hold everyone over during the offseason?

Speculation as a result of boredom.

Seems that the original "Got DS?" poll didn't come out till after the system was out for a bit, but the amount of people not interested is quite interesting, especially since I thought I remembered people being skeptical about DS when it came out due to the touch screen and dual screens

Seems that the original "Got DS?" poll didn't come out till after the system was out for a bit

Actually, I found this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1826

The poll wasn't listed as "Got DS?", which made it harder to discover that poll unless you used the poll search feature.

since I thought I remembered people being skeptical about DS when it came out due to the touch screen and dual screens

Found this poll about the opinion of the DS before it was even released:

Man, what a board vote for "No, I just don't want one at this time". It had 57.86% at the end of the board vote and dropped to 53.07% on the second update of the poll. Almost a 5% drop on that update.

Considering the median age on GameFAQS being around 20 years old, I find it hard to believe that over half the site had their first system be something prior to the SNES. I know what the poll says, but people had to have been counting the first time they ever touched a game system. Close to half of the site was in diapers or not even born when the SNES came out, and most of us were barely starting grade school by the time it was finished. I might be an exception, since I didn't get a game system until I was 10, but I can't trust those poll results, at least when compared to the age one.

They could've been bought used or at a large discount. I'm sure a NES at that time was significantly cheaper than the SNES, as were the games.

Less of the board hating the 3DS, more of the board being logical and/or not rich and seeing there's almost nothing worth buying for the 3DS immediately, and waiting for one of, or any combinations of 3 choices:
1. Games worth buying
2. Price drop
3. "3DS Lite"

The median date of birth is somewhere in 1988 currently (probably about the same, maybe a few months earlier when the first console generation poll was taken). IIRC, there was another poll that said most people started gaming when they were from ages 4-6, so that'd put the median start time at 1992-94. The NES, like the SNES, PS, and PS2, was popular long after its successor came out, so it's not so hard to believe.

Here's the poll: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2195

The 3DS came out 2 days ago in Europe and ownership is already at 13.34% in Europe right now (17.99% in the UK). 3DS ownership is only at 6.89% in North America right now since it was released today. Based on that, ownership of 3DS should be expected to double in North America during the next 2 days alone.

Thanks Luster! Looking at that poll, our median for when people started gaming looks to be age 4, which puts us in 1992, within the first year of the SNES's release. So that matches with the console generation poll quite well.

It's not like you're buying these things yourself.

Good poll, Leonhart.

Would a music-based contest here ever work? VG-music's getting better numbers in this poll than I once thought it would. ~86% of the site probably knows what their favorite video game song is, and ~49% knows a lot of songs. That's potential for an idea we once dismissed.

I dunno that it'd work very well. It assumes that people know the names of a lot of these songs without looking them up and/or there's a lot of overlap in the kinds of video game music they listen to (which I'm sure there is, but still). I mean, I suppose you could provide music links or something, but I imagine a lot of the voters wouldn't bother to listen to them.

I suppose it could work, but there are a lot of things that could go wrong and make it a failure.

A video game music contest would be tough to run when it comes to match pictures. The songs would not any have pictures that are associated with them. Above the 2 options in each match, I suppose you could include an embedded sample of both songs in a match, but that might not be possible due to legal issues.

This is the problem I see with it, especially songs not everyone know the name of. Theres many songs I know I love if I hear them, but I wouldn't know their exact name on the top of my head, and having to search just to vote in a poll is something I know a lot of people wouldn't bother doing. And like someone said earlier, embedding might cause legal issues, and having a youtube would make the front page a mess.

Basically it would just come down to whatever is the most popular game in most cases, and stuff with easy names, like Zelda Theme or Mario Bros level 1 theme would just dominate.

Someone suggested we talk about a sitewide VG Music bracket during the last episode of The Show, and at first I thought it was a terrible idea but lately it's been growing on me. Instead of a normal match pic there could be two pictures listed, and clicking them would take you the best-quality youtube for that song, with just the song titles listed as the poll options below.

I mean, don't want it replacing the character/game brackets or anything, but it could be a fun little 64 entrant/2 matches a day Contest to break up the offseason a little bit.

Technically those songs on Youtube are illegal since you can't post something without permission from the copyright holder. Not something they'd actually do anything about, but C-Net would probably avoid doing that due to the legality.

I dunno. I just feel like the nomination process would wind up being a disaster, for one reason or the other. There's not really a consensus on popular video game songs like there are for characters/games.

#388 | Ngamer64 | Posted 3/28/2011 10:05:41 PM | message detail
Yeah, the legal issues make it tricky, without a doubt. Then there's the problem of someone flagging the videos midway through the match and forcing youtube to take them down, which turns it back into "vote for your favorite game."

Cool idea in theory, but I'd say the whole thing isn't worth considering without a direct link to let you hear each song, so it's hard to imagine SB ever getting the approval to run it.

Yeah, legality's the trick here. In fact, I wonder if he'll ever run this poll again; this poll just turned eleven years old without a remake:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=118

For shame though. If legality wasn't an issue, you could just randomly load one of the competing songs and make the options look something like this:

[match-pic?]
--> Punch-Out!!'s Fight Theme (now playing)
--> Phoenix Wright's Objection Theme [speaker-icon that turns on the other song]

Naming the songs should be better addressed if possible, but that would be a clean enough look and the music playing automatically would attract some attention too.

I'll agree music isn't as pre-decided as characters/games/series though...but this wouldn't be on the level of a quote-contest either, and -- given easy access to hearing the options -- viewers could make a pretty fast and/or fairly informed opinion. Just gotta get that access...

I wouldn't like that sort of contest, since I don't listen to VG music. I would still vote in the contest, but all of my votes will be based on what games the songs are from and not on the quality of the song itself. So I will be voting like I would in a games contest.

That is an excellent point, one I've thought about, too. The implications are this: not only will people blindly vote for the songs from the favorite games, but you're more likely to vote for a track you're familiar with, unless the other track is sounds significantly better to you.

Plus, it usually takes several listenings before you appreciate and "hear" all the good qualities in a piece of music, which again ruiins the chances of any "unfamiliar" video game tracks winning. Thus, even if Bacon ran these polls "blindly" by just linking to the streamed tracks without showing the title, the more recognizable one will probably win.

And I'd also be against such a contest because I strongly disagree with most others' taste in music, ANYWAY... =P The results would sicken me or most any major VG music fans.

I'd like to see a bunch of hardcore game music fans (including some with great musical ability or knowledge) to come together and create a large list of what they feel are the greatest video game tracks, and have it posted somewhere on GameFAQs.
