Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 994
I've
noticed most people around me say don't pronounce the f before the th
in fifth and twelfth. Isthmus is another really challenging word,
although you don't hear it in conversation often and if you
mispronounce it, it will be hard for others to understand you. Another question: does anyone outside New England pronounce (and spell!) learnt, burnt, etc.? --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
I say burnt, but not learnt. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
For
the February pronunciation poll, there is a noticeable trend regarding
the map. English speaking countries all seem to favor "feb-yoo-air-ee"
while non-English speaking countries favor either "feb-roo-er-ee" or
"feb-roo-air-ee". The only major countries that are an exception to
this rule are China, Korea, and Japan, which all favored
"feb-yoo-air-ee". Speaking of pronunciation, how do you pronounce "twelfth"? Do you pronounce all 5 consonantal sounds: t, w, l, f, th? Yes, I do it that way. Another question: does anyone outside New England pronounce (and spell!) learnt, burnt, etc.? I don't use "learnt" (never even heard of it until now), but I use "burnt" though. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Oh man, a 1-on-1 poll! Exciting stuff! --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
We haven't had a Super Bowl poll in FOUR YEARS? --- Winner of the Spring 2004 "Best Game Ever" Contest http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page, Rest in peace Mitch Stuekerjuergen :( |
I
know, it's scary. I'm going to track all 24 hours of poll updates for
this one. Geolocation results are going to be interesting to see when
it comes to the states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. It will be good
to test out the theory of both teams winning their respective home
states. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4239®ion=USXWI XD at Wisconsin. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4239®ion=USXPA Steelers winning Pennsylvania like I expected. It's not dominating Pennsylvania as much as the Packers is dominating Wisconsin. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

First post since becoming unwarned. I can breathe again. Wait till the diluted ASV comes in, Steelers gonna rape face. |
The Steelers are winning every continent except North America. It's like Packers = Zelda and Steelers = FFVII. --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
So
the Packers are going to come out crushing in the 1st, the Steelers
make large cuts in the 2nd, then the Packers come roaring in the 3rd
with the 4th being a slight favourite to the Steelers. There you have it guys no need to watch the whole game, we just need to see how well the Packers perform in the power quarter. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Nah, the game's already over, Link always wins. --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
They should have a special game after the Super Bowl, Link vs the winner. I'm sure Link's experience herding sheep and tossing bombs will help him nail a victory. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |

I came in to ask the same thing as BT --- ~Zen switched to Chrome, 'cuz Firefox sucks. Unlike Firefox, however, BlAcK TuRtLe doesn't suck at all! |
Mass Effect 2 won with ease while Final Fantasy XIII was pretty embarrassed. Not sure if any of those are surprises. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Holy crap, the Super Bowl poll got such terrible support outside the US and Canada. Here was the vote distribution: North America - 87.25% South America - 1.09% Europe - 8.39% Asia - 1.55% Oceania - 1.67% Africa - 0.05% And that was a full 24 hour poll. The previous record stood at 82.22% in the 2008 Black Friday poll, but at least that had an option for non-US voters to pick. The 9 hour "2008 election day poll" (3:00 PM to 12:00 AM) got 87.21% from North America. And then there's the 9 hour "Do you dream in color?" poll from last year which had 85.95% from North America, although that poll was manually put up by Bacon because the previous poll ran for 40 hours because of a glitch. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Breaking News: North America cares about football a lot more than anywhere else. More at 11. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
Mass Effect 2 won big. RDR looked strong and likely wins if there's no ME2. Galaxy 2 did well enough. Donkey Kong Country Returns looked respectable and very likely would have won the Wii poll if Galaxy 2 hadn't been there. Final Fantasy XIII and Black Ops pretty much stunk it up relative to expectations and New Vegas looked even weaker. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
From: | #172 Not surprising, but awesome nonetheless. Especially when you consider ME2 came out really early in the year, and typically the later a game is released the better it looks. --- http://i49.tinypic.com/2ry672r.jpg |

2000: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (no champion) 2001: Final Fantasy X or Super Smash Bros. Melee (won by Final Fantasy X) 2002: Metroid Prime or Kingdom Hearts (won by Metroid Prime) 2003: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (won by the same) 2004: Half-Life 2 or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (won by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas) 2005: Resident Evil 4 (won by the same) 2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (won by the same) 2007: Super Mario Galaxy (won by the same) 2008: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (won by the same) 2009: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves or Batman: Arkham Asylum or Assassin's Creed II or Dragon Age: Origins (won by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) 2010: Mass Effect 2 (won by the same) Apart from Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto going from hero to zero in record quick time, the big changes come in the strength of Melee and Kingdom Hearts. As well as their years' champions, they were also beaten respectively by GTA III and Vice City, but would have a good chance at winning their years' title today. Half-Life 2 and MGS3 are both stronger today than they were in 04, but not to such a dramatic degree. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. This is an interesting poll today. Here were the results from last time: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2331 I bet this poll will have some interesting trends. "My parents" probably gets the ASV here. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
I'm
surprised "my parents" is doing so well. It's just 3 PM right now, and
it's already over 54%. Based on the age and occupation polls and
assuming it ends a couple points higher, I guess that means something
like 40% of high school graduates here live with the parents. --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
It
took a little bit longer than usual for "My parents" to get the ASV
here. Where as 14-17 had its ASV start at 2:30 PM, "My parents" didn't
get going with the ASV until about 3:15 PM. Based on the age and occupation polls and assuming it ends a couple points higher, I guess that means something like 40% of high school graduates here live with the parents. It would be closer to 50% than 40%, based on these 2 polls: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2331 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2323 The first one is the same poll that is being re-run today. The second one is an age poll. I prefer to use those 2 polls, as they were run just 8 days apart. In that age poll, 13-17 had 40.61% and "Under 13" had 2.94%, so it's a matter of subtracting those 2 numbers from the 67.76% that "My parents" had in the original poll from 2006. 67.76% - 40.61% - 2.94% = 24.21% It seems reasonable to assume that 100% of everyone under 18 are living with their parents. Most of the remaining 24.21% of "My parents" overall percentage is probably going towards 18-23 in that age poll. And 18-23 had 41.90%, so 24.21 / 41.90 ends up being 57.78%. That makes 57.78% the maximum possible percentage of users in the 18-23 age group who still live with their parents. It's probably closer to 50%, as some people in the older age groups still live with their parents. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

What's Duke Nukem's potential strength post-DNF? --- Black Turtle. Whatever. |
It's
already legendary, the game's gonna sell well and likely be quotable,
and Duke Nukem 3D's roughly fourteen years old now...so he should get a
good boost, especially if it's classic Duke in top form and the game is
good. He'll be fun to watch this year. --- Nominate E P O N A. http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg |
It depends how well DNF does, but besides Commander Shepard Duke Nukem is going to be my most hyped returner. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Trends for the last two POTDS: Europe has a lot more people living at home, despite also having a slightly higher rate of people living alone. I would imagine this is mostly because of really good state university systems though, meaning that people don't have to leave home as often to attend a top school. California probably has a high rate of people living at home for the same reason. Urban areas also seem to have more people living at home (DC/NJ). The Midwest and to a lesser extent, the South have a lot more people living away from home. Midwest probably because of low unemployment rates, and I imagine the South might be people marrying earlier, plus people not being as well off financially at not being able to afford a lot of games until they are out on their own. Or maybe the two regions are just older for whatever reason. Midwest has pretty high married/significant other rates as well. No real US trends for today's poll, except that the Mid-Atlantic/Appalachia regions seem to be more worried than the rest of the country. Weird since they are not alike culturally, but are right next to each other geographically. Worse weather patterns making people fear the future? Maybe a Rust Belt kind of pessimism? Michigan seems pretty average though. --- "Ahem! There is *sand* on my *boot*!"--Kefka Black Turtle beat me, Yesmar in the Fall 2010 Guru Contest! |

The question is kind of strange- I think the world is more dangerous than 10 years ago, but it's not because of increased crime. If the answers didn't mention crime so much I'd guess the 2nd option would be winning. The optimism has been drained out of the USA these past 10 years. --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
