Yet, would anyone still take the tenth Final Fantasy over the sixth? How far is number eight from number ten?

Everyone expects RBY to beat FFX without too much trouble (though a narrow win, perhaps)....but, when considering the match involving Zelda:OoT, MGS, RBY, and FF8... FF8 is expected to get, what, 43% on RBY? (who knows what the actual score would be 1-on-1, at this time)

I could bring up more numbers from more matches, but it wouldn't make things any more clear.

I think I'd go with FFVI over FFVIII because it's always been the 2nd strongest Final Fantasy until a little while ago. FFX/FFVI should be a pretty clear win for X though.

FFX vs. FFVI, I'd probably side with FFX.

Well, Link's Awakening could be worth 45% on Majora's Mask, right?

I mean, since all the Zelda fans are drones, they should all be relatively close in strength, right? heyooooooooo

Sorry, I made a typo... I meant to word it this way, since I believe FFX is a clear favorite over FF6 at this point. I think I'd take Starcraft over MMX due to SC2's release.... but of course, when we're talking at the time of BGE 2009.... ehhhh...... Starcraft, I guess....

I'd side with Starcraft back then, too.

FFVI got 45.5% on Link to this Past despite LttP being leeched, probably heavily so. FFX probably gets close to that on Link to the Past 1-on-1, right? Hard to say FFVI even has a chance there.

More from FFVI vs FFVIII:
http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Ocarina_of_Time_vs_Pokemon_Red/Blue/Yellow_vs_Metal_Gear_Solid_vs_Final_Fantasy_VIII_2009

Do we trust Final Fantasy VI to do that well on Metal Gear Solid? I wouldn't. Unless we think whatever happened to the Metal Gear Solid sequels last contest is applicable to the first game as well, and who the hell knows what happened there.

StarCraft 56.42% 69,651
Mega Man X 43.58% 53,794
TOTAL VOTES 123,445

A 15,857 vote margin of victory.

Final Fantasy 8 (2009g) has a strength of 33.87 against Base Link.
Final Fantasy 6 (2009g) has a strength of 31.09 against Base Link.

Final Fantasy 8 54.10% 70,025
Final Fantasy 6 45.90% 59,401

VI vs. IX is extremely close according to it, with VI winning by less than 2%, and IIRC FFIX's value doesn't take Chrono Cross's leeching into account. I'd be leery of putting much value on 4-way x-stats, though.

Remember that between the x-stats for '09 and '10, FF9 has one of the biggest falls between the two of them if you go by games which FF9 finished ahead of in '09 and behind in '10 and vice versa. So if you want to take the '10 stats at face value and assume FF9 > FF6...you get what was once one of this site's supposed favorite games losing to a Batman game. Oh the irony. Although we could look at the thirteen games which finished ahead of FF9 in the '10 stats which were below it in the '09 stats:

Zelda: Majora's Mask ->
Fallout 3 ->
Metroid Prime ->
Zelda: Wind Waker ->
Half-Life 2 ->
Shadow of the Colossus ->
Metal Gear Solid 2 ->
God of War
Portal ->
Oblivion
Tales of Symphonia
Grand Theft Auto III
Diablo II

At least about half of those games seem to have randomly boosted between '09 and '10 or were just handicapped badly in '09 (or both, and yes I did place HL2 in the "boosted" group due to a possible Valve boost). However it's pretty hilarious that the stats have GTAIII > FF9, but also have CC > GTA: SA and LoD > GTAIV. What in the world happened to FF9 to make it not keep up with its GTA counterpart???

(lol GTA anyways. That series sucks, right?)

SFF?

Why would you assume FF9 > FF6, though?

Pretty clear the hierarchy would be 7 > 10 > 6/8 > 9 > 12. Too lazy to look at the x-stats at the moment to compare the rest, though I'd assume 4 would be around 12's level or maybe a bit above, while 1 would be last in this list but above every other mainline FF besides 13, which again may end up being 12-level. I could be wrong.

There's a couple debatable matches to be had in the same series, and Tactics might be interesting to watch against, say, 9, but I don't know why this topic is suddenly saying things like "6 would give 10 a great match" or "Let's assume 9 > 6" other than the usual offseason boredom. We don't have to hit 1000 during the offseason.

That said, how would the x-stats look if we assumed WWF No Mercy > Ocarina of Time?

LOL, I actually worked up the raw X-Stats since I noticed they were still missing from the wiki, and I couldn't help but wonder if No Mercy actually wasn't the weakest game in the bracket even though it finished last in the raw X-Stats. After all, it got chained through two SFF beatdowns (DPP over PoR in Round 2 and Brawl over DPP in Round 3). I'm not really sure how to make adjustments, though.

Some of my favorite observations about the way things turned out:

- 16 games were above 40%. Even given the larger field (16 out of 128 would be just 4 out of 32), that's by far the most ever. This was probably the most even contest yet.
- Continuing that thought, if 20% is still considered the fodder line, then only 17 games were considered "fodder" in this contest--one fewer than in Spring 2006, which previously had the fewest. Of course, Spring 2006 only had 32 entrants. Perhaps we need to have fewer Character Battles and more Games Contests.
- Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, the supposed "black sheep" of Pokémon generations, finished ahead of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. I'm probably one of the only people who thinks that that's how it should be.
- It did, on the other hand, finish behind every Grand Theft Auto game in the bracket except for the one it beat in Round 1.
- Super Mario Sunshine, which was upset by Halo 3, managed to finish just ahead of Halo 2.
- In addition to the games that directly lost to one of their sequels (like Melee and Kingdom Hearts) Devil May Cry and God of War were also outperformed by their sequels.
- Three pairs of games were so close as to have the same four-digit X-Stat value, requiring a more exact calculation in order to figure out which order they belonged in, and in all three cases, it was pretty damn close even after adding extra digits. To wit:

82. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 25.238%
83. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn 25.237%

56. Borderlands 29.107%
57. Dragon Age: Origins 29.106%

And closest of all:

20. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 37.8517%
21. Tales of Symphonia 37.8516%

Yeah, that's about as close as it gets. They were on opposite sides of the bracket, too, so their loss chains don't meet up until the very top. What makes this especially interesting is that Oblivion beat Tales of Symphonia twice in the lol 4-ways, both times rather convincingly. Furthermore, the game that ended up knocking Tales out of this contest was God of War, a match that was seemingly set up by SBAllen as a result of Tales just narrowly edging out God of War for second place in that exciting first-round fourway...which Oblivion took first in. So to summarize: God of War can beat Tales of Symphonia straight-up, but came in third to a combination of Oblivion and ToS in a fourway along with San Andreas (which is still the weakest of the four), but Tales is now expected to go more or less 50-50 with Oblivion. While God of War boosting since Spring 2009 seems like a reasonable assumption given the release of God of War III in early 2010, it still suggests that Oblivion has fallen further than Tales of Symphonia. I'm curious as to what would happen if ToS and Oblivion met up 1v1 next time.

I wonder why Canada loves Hotmail so much? Is it just because the other email services are total unknowns in Canada, or maybe it's because they feel the need to have an email address that ends in ".ca"? (possible with Hotmail, but not Gmail)

I think it's the fads that Canada goes through. MSN was the only way to talk to people back in the day which meant you needed a hotmail account. Even if you didn't care about MSN with all of your friends having Hotmail it makes you want to get one of those. While Gmail should have caused another fad change with Facebook getting popular not too long after sort of killed any reason to have a new e-mail address so now there's no reason for people to switch. As for younger kids they only need an e-mail address so they can join Facebook and since everyone has Hotmail they have no reason to look for other options.

It's a bit weird since the same thing was happening in US though you guys used AIM, I guess like I said we just never caught on to the Gmail fad. Another example here's the Facebook/Myspace poll.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3444

Taking a look at Canada you see MySpace is non-existent. It wasn't because we didn't know about it, in fact it was mention many times everywhere including news, tv shows etc. The site just didn't caught on and really you need a group of people joining at one time for it to spread since no one wants to join something where none of your friends are on, especially with social networking.

What social networking site did Canada prefer in the days prior to Facebook being opened to the public? For the first several years of Facebook's life, it was restricted to college students so Canada couldn't use it unless they were in college and had a valid college email.

The email poll back in 2009 showed very strong regional trends when it comes to the US.

The Northeast greatly prefers Gmail. The South prefers Yahoo. Hotmail does best in the Midwest and Rocky Mountain states. The West prefers Gmail, with the exception of California (in favor of Yahoo) and Alaska (Hotmail).

Now that the first hour is over with, Gmail is up 698 already on Hotmail. In the 2009 email poll, Gmail was barely leading Hotmail at the end of the first hour. At this rate, Gmail should get over a 1000 vote lead before Hotmail starts to regularly win updates overnight and that will be enough to survive the night vote without losing the lead to Hotmail.

It took about 400 votes for Touchscreen to get its first vote.

Anyways, trends for yesterday's email poll:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdDU3eVV2bDZJSkdNcmpZRHhHQzFyR2c&gid=1

Gmail held up better overnight this time around and managed to win the first 4 hours against Hotmail. Gmail never lost a single update to Hotmail until 3:06 AM. Gmail managed to hit a max lead of 1166 overnight before Hotmail would cut about 400 off the lead with the night vote and early morning. By 8:00 AM, Gmail was stalling Hotmail all the way until about 1:00 PM before it started making a serious push to increase its lead. ASV favored Gmail and Yahoo here, while Hotmail collapsed with the ASV.

Night Vote hierarchy: Free email service > Hotmail > Paid email service > ISP email > Yahoo! Mail > Gmail > AOL Mail
ASV hierarchy: AOL Mail > Yahoo! Mail > Gmail > Paid email service > ISP email > Hotmail > Free email service

My Geolocation observations on the e-mail poll:

Gmail seems to be consistently popular across the U.S., although it's most popular in the Mid-Atlantic (only scattered support in New England really, mostly MA), and slightly less popular in a scattered fashion in the South, where Yahoo seems to be most popular.

The most interesting thing I noticed however, was that once you cross the Mississippi, Hotmail becomes much more popular, mostly at the expense of Yahoo. Except California, which in a huge aberration for the region, goes for Yahoo. I assume the reason behind this has to do with MSN's regional dominance in certain areas, and it not being able to get as strong a foothold in California for some reason. Can anyone from the area confirm this?

Polls for the next 2 days:

2/4/2011 - How many hours a day do you watch some kind of screen (TV, monitor, cell phone, game system)?
2/5/2011 - Who do you think will win the Super Bowl?

F*** yeah, a Super Bowl poll. There hasn't been a Super Bowl poll since 2007, so the Geolocation results will be quite interesting for the countries outside the US. Along with the fact that the poll will have very terrible support outside of the US.

For this poll, I'm hoping for a direct match between the 2 teams. I don't want a poll that looks like this:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2651

Or a poll that has a "I don't care" option either. I'm hoping for a poll that has just 2 options, so I can see how the 2 teams perform in a direct match.

So...I should try to get an HDTV once I go to America or something?

I don't even know if my current TV is an HDTV.

Speaking of pronunciation, how do you pronounce "twelfth"?

Do you pronounce all 5 consonantal sounds: t, w, l, f, th?

I think this word is basically impossible for a native Chinese speaker to say.

Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible.
