GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 994
Biggest boosts: 1) Metroid Prime (+22) 2) Shadow of the Colossus (+21) 3) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (+17) 4) Paper Mario (+17) 5) Mass Effect (+15) Biggest falls: 1) World of Warcraft (-20) 2) Final Fantasy XII (-18) 3) Halo 2 (-15) 4) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (-15) 5) Final Fantasy IX (-13) Ha, this reminds of of why I picked WoW over PM.... it was just ahead of PM by such a large amount I felt WoW was safer... even without relying on stats PM looked weak as heck based in its one match last contest. Of course I acknowledged PM had a pretty good chance, but man! FFIX's fall is kind of surprising... I'm not sure what to make of that. It did struggle with KotOR more than I believed it should have, so maybe it has weakened? --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you congratulate BLACK TURTLE for winning the Guru Challenge." |
The pages for the battle and bracket stats went down earlier, so Bacon will announce the contest winners soon. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Looks like Bacon has the winners listed here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/gotd.html The page is being a little glitchy right now, so don't be surprised if you don't see a long page on the above link. I got my 10 Karma earlier for beating Bacon's score on the Battle Challenge and I was confirmed to get 5th place for a Karma Entry. I didn't get my Karma for the Karma Entry just yet. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
And now I finally got my 25 Karma bonus for my Battle Challenge entry. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
I suppose FF9 was quite surprising, but in the '10 stats it was below the following games: Zelda: Majora's Mask Fallout 3 Metroid Prime Zelda: Wind Waker Half-Life 2 Shadow of the Colossus Metal Gear Solid 2 God of War Portal Oblivion Tales of Symphonia Grand Theft Auto III Diablo II It wasn't below any of these in the '09 stats, thus the -13 I gave FF9. Other big falls I remember which came close were GTAIV, CoD4, and Kingdom Hearts. If you want me to look more into that, please ask. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
I'm
assuming FFIX's position last year was based on its Round 1 match where
it looked like it might be worth ~30% on Ocarina of Time 1-on-1: (http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Ocarina_of_Time_vs_Final_Fantasy_IX_vs_Half-Life_vs_Chrono_Cross_2009) And not it's Round 2 match where FFVIII beat it down almost as badly as FFX did this year: (http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Ocarina_of_Time_vs_Final_Fantasy_VIII_vs_Starcraft_vs_Final_Fantasy_IX_2009). --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
Today
reminds me: it really sucks SB went from ten prizes to eight. It makes
sense, considering the added way to win...it still sucks to miss a
prize by one place though! Haha, good game, GameFAQs -- I'll get
Ikaruga another day by another way, I suppose. It probably makes up for how I lucked out on Lopen and Leonhart being DQ'd in 2007 to win a prize that year..... --- Nominate E P O N A. http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg |
I'm
just saying like it is. Some people are expecting something like a 1/4
of the bracket being fictional characters which is just crazy. 1/4 of the field in a 128 character bracket is made up of trash. There's no way there would be less than 1/4 of the field being fictional characters. --- From his looks Magus is Macho Man Randy Savage as an anime zombie. The black wind howls, and one of you will snap into a Slim Jim ooh yeeeah! -sonicblastpunch |
FF9
was probably overperforming due to OFPUF. Though to be fair there was
another Square game there, and given how good CC looks in the '10 stats
the obvious conclusion is that FF9 did SFF CC. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
...Come to think of it, do we pick Final Fantasy IX over Final Fantasy VI now? --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
1/4
of the field in a 128 character bracket is made up of trash. There's no
way there would be less than 1/4 of the field being fictional
characters. Again if all SBAllen does is remove that rule I really doubt people are going to start nominating fictional characters in droves. Especially in the first contest. I'm not thinking of nominating characters like Homer Simpson then seeing that rule that I can't. We're on a video game site. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Does anyone know when we get the prize notifications for those who won a prize? --- What goes up, must go down. Like my grades...- black wargreykid |

Does anyone know when we get the prize notifications for those who won a prize? You will get a prize notification in the form of an email. The prize notification is sent to the email address you provided when you submitted your bracket. I'd say you'll be getting the email within the next 2 weeks at most. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Biggest
Falls Between '09 and '10 according to x-stats from each year
(specifically based on how many games they were behind in the '10 stats
which they were ahead of in the '09 stats, though games which they were
ahead of in the '10 stats but were behind in the '09 stats help counter
this somewhat): 1) World of Warcraft (-20) 2) Final Fantasy XII (-18) 3) Halo 2 (-15 or -16, I don't remember) 4) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City ('-15 or -16, I don't remember) 5) Final Fantasy IX (-13) 6) Kingdom Hearts (-12) 7) Grand Theft Auto IV (-11) 8) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (-11) 9) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (-11) 10) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (-9) Just to note, GTAIII actually has +11 by this method, which is hilarious considering how low all its brethren are. I suppose we can blame FF9 being so high based solely on how many games boosted ahead of it (e.g. Majora's Mask, Metroid Prime, Shadow of the Colossus). Everything else looks pretty good though. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
5 Ultimaphazon 85200 Karma - 1st Aww yeah. Still, that was closer than I expected and I assume JamesWaumsley or RPGlord expected to finish in the top 2 as far as Karma entries go. It's interesting that there's quite a big difference in the Prize Bracket/Karma Bracket distribution between the battle challenge and the bracket challenge: - In the bracket challenge, the winning Karma entry is at 9 and you have to go down all the way to 73 to get the last winning karma bracket. The last winning Prize entry is at 13. - In the battle challenge, the highest Karma entry is at 5, the lowest is at 23 (50 spots higher than the Bracket challenge), while the last winning Prize entry is at 14 (more or less the same as the Bracket challenge) Basically, Karma entries are massively overrepresented in the among the highest Battle entries. --- A Lord of Darkness in this day and age? Please tell me you're not actually serious! - Recettear |
Since one of my earlier posts went unnoticed (cause I posted 4 more times after that post), I'll repost this again: I asked Bacon for some stats regarding the number of Fun, Prize, and Karma entries for both the Bracket and Battle Challenges. He responded back with these stats: Bracket: Fun - 6338, Prize - 22269, Karma - 2707 Battle: Fun - 33638, Prize - 21113, Karma - 3390 Battle w/ Score > 0: Fun - 9268, Prize - 17846, Karma - 2900 I was surprised that there were so few Karma entries. But there could have been more Karma entries than that because there was no option for a Karma Entry in the first several days of the contest entry period. In the Battle Challenge, Fun Entries are most common because anyone that didn't enter the Battle Challenge very early on in the contest would have no chance at a prize. So they would be very likely to pick the Fun Entry. The last stat provided is for Battle Challenge entries with at least 100 points or more. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

...Come to think of it, do we pick Final Fantasy IX over Final Fantasy VI now? No, FFVI > FFVIII could be a nice upset pick, actually, especially in a night match. --- Congratulations to Guru Champion Black Turtle, who called MM > GSC when most of us were calling it impossible. |
In 2009, Final Fantasy IX got 28.4% on Ocarina of Time while being leeched by Chrono Cross. In 2010 Final Fantasy IX got 36.9% on Final Fantasy X while likely being SFFed. (If FFVIII could SFF it, why not X?) Final Fantasy VI got 45.5% on Link to the Past...While Link's Awakening was leeching Link to the Past and Super Metroid probably was too. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |

From: red sox 777 | #069 ...FFVI > FFVIII is the upset now? FFVIII for top 10 game Edit: Woo, first edit in stats topic history --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
Editing is nice, even if a one-hour time limit gimps it. Still waiting for spoiler tags, though! Edit: This is neat, I guess. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |
I'm not sure why you'd need more than one hour to edit your post anyway...! Well, unless you just want to goof around with your post, but then the 5 edit limit gimps that, too. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
I'm not sure why you'd need more than one hour to edit your post anyway...! To be able to constantly update things in the first post of a topic. --- This is the kind of **** that allowed the Black Turtle win to happen. 5,000 dead brackets. Want that on your damn conscience, Zelda apologists? |
Edits
would be great for a game megathread stickies, especially a new game.
I've seen plenty of stickied threads that have some general info, but
are outdated to the point of being near-worthless. Editing these,
constantly adding new information and such, would make them much more
useful and relevant for much longer, changing them to be an
easy-to-access archive of general information and answers to the most
common FAQs for a game. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |
I'm more happy about clickable links. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Still waiting for spoiler tags, though! And quoting too. We were supposed to get spoiler tags and quoting, but it causes problems with GameSpot users being unable to quote messages containing our spoiler tags and quotes in them. GameSpot bans the use of the words "style" and "class" when they are used inside of HTML tags because it can be used to do HTML exploits and JavaScript exploits. If you want to see spoilers and quotes, go here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/572012-test-drive-ii-the-duel/57782622 --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
I
generally don't care about features that I already have, either through
Gamefox or through other addons, so I couldn't care less about quoting
or clickable links. Post editing is nice though, and it should have been added a long time ago. And spoiler tags too, I guess --- A Lord of Darkness in this day and age? Please tell me you're not actually serious! - Recettear |

Maybe FF6 could look better in another games contest? After all both Kefka and Terra impressed us last contest. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
Probably not, or at least not by much. Kefka and especially Terra's boosts were clearly from Dissidia, Cecil got it too. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
On a completely unrelated note, what other big gaming sites have contests like this, and are any of them coming up soon? --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |

From: AxemPink | #081 No, I saw. But still, to think the day would come when FFVIII comes one step closer to claiming its rightful place...It almost brings a tear to the eye. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
Nothing from what I've seen. Gamespy held one a while back in '04, and that's all I remember. No other major video game site holds best video game or best video game character contests? --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
There
have been a few character contests on other sites since then (although
I've never seen anything go all out; I only remember IGN's PS2 one and
the two Gamespot held, which were each separately about heroes and
villains). --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
Anybody here playing Crimson Echoes, the fan-made CT sequel? It's actually surprisingly good so far. --- Black Turtle and Zelda always win! |
I...haven't completed any RPG, period. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
I
thought the creators of that got a cease and desist letter from
Squeenix before they finished and told them not to release what they
already had? Squeenix was probably afraid someone would confuse it for an official Squeenix game and ruin their reputation for making horrible games. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
I'm still waiting for "official" x-stats on gamefaqscontests.com or Ngamer's site. There was a Lunar character contest. on I think LunarNet. That's all that matters! (Except Court Records doing a character contest would be nice, too.) =p I think it's a bit unfair to count FF6 as doing really that crappily in BGE 2009. Link to the Past is potentially (likely) the third strongest game. Yes, Link's Awakening is close to FF6, but I think LA was underestimated. You could even make a case that FF6 could compete with SMB3 based on their matches in that contest. (not that I think it would win) FF6 obviously slid a bit, but I've got to believe it can still beat FF8.... though it'd be close....probably no more than 52/48. --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you congratulate BLACK TURTLE for winning the Guru Challenge." |
From: AxemPink | #091 They were just about finished when they got the C&D, and it's leaked out now. --- Black Turtle and Zelda always win! |
Oh. Nifty. Well, I'll have to go look at that after I beat Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger DS. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |
I'd take FF6 > FF8, yep. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
FFVI > FFVIII isn't that big of a stretch. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
Actually
no, I take that back. At this point I'd take Wind Waker over Final
Fantasy VI. FF6 is probably on Fallout 3's level now. --- Currently Playing - Resident Evil 4 Next Games Up - Okami, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee |
In
terms of indirect strength, FFVI got 45.5% on a LFF'd LttP (you have to
think the presence of LA and Super Metroid favour FFVI there) against
FFVIII's 32% on OoT w/ MGS and RBY. I think that favours FFVIII
(compare LttP vs. FFVII, FFVII vs. OoT, then allow a little more LFF in
the LttP match than in the OoT one). --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |
That
is a tough match. I'd probably go with FF8 simply because I usually go
against the game/character I like more in debated matches, so that I
win either way. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |
I'd
fanboy pick FFVIII over anything as long as I thought it had a
realistic chance of happening, but I'm not sure I could actually pull
the trigger on FFVIII > FFVI. Something feels...off about that
actually happening. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
