I
think Black Ops is out of it despite it being close. The morning is
looking to favour Assassin's Creed while any night push would go
towards FFXIII. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |

I don't know what's going on right now. Care to explain? Judging by this previous post: NA sucks. Hopefully FF can get the lead relatively soon and build a decent overnight advantage to hold off anything come the day. I'm guessing he's an FFXIII supporter who is disappointed that FFXIII hasn't started killing the overnight vote yet. Obviously I can't speak for the rest of the site, but I only voted AC:B because I didn't want FFXIII or Black Ops to win this poll and nothing else here was strong enough to potentially top those two. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |

From: UltimaterializerX | #063 It's a good game, but far from good enough to be considered a GotY contender. Kind of surprised AC is actually winning. Top vote option, anyone? But seriously, it's kind of crazy that AC has the strength that it has here, considering how mediocre the first title is. AC2 and Brotherhood are solid games, though (that I still need to play, damn my backlog), and I do find it interesting that AC of all series is one that is getting a major pull here. As for the rest, New Vegas is doing respectable, but I can see why it's not winning due to how incredibly glitchy is it (yes, even for a Bethesda game). If it had more polish, it'd at least be beating FF13 if not outright winning this poll. Black Ops is actually doing respectable considering how badly the CoD series tanked in the last contest. What this match tells me is that Mass Effect 2 should have an easy win unless GameFAQs jumps on the RDR bandwagon, which is possible. Also, anyone else thinking there will be three days of Multiplatform games? Nice of Bacon to actually split them up, but I wish he'd do something a bit different next year just because of the sheer number of multiplatform games. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |

FF13's
losing half of a multi-platform GotY-poll? Huh. I figured it would have
given ME2 a fight, but I don't think AC:B will really compete with ME2
now. I mean, even CoD is looking decent enough here. So, what are currently the top contenders for the new-IP GotY? From what we've seen so far, here are the biggest contenders from each poll: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors Fruit Ninja (haha) Minecraft Alpha Heavy Rain Alan Wake Limbo Bayonetta What other notable games are we missing so far? Super Meat Boy's the only one that immediately comes to mind, and it's not like it's a powerhouse by any means. Random Question: Why is Smash Bros. do disproportionately popular here? There's at least some logic behind the other games that are. Zelda and jRPGs are games that have a lot of exploration and secrets to them, so using a FAQ for them makes sense. And I guess the kind of people that like Zelda and jRPGS aren't huge fans of PC and Xbox games, so that explains the repulsion there as well. But why Smash? Was the community started on the boards here or something? That's the only real explanation I have. --- "Ahem! is downright pathetic here. Why? Well, even the twelfth member of the

Metroid have never seemed excessive to me. Compared to the general public, yes. Mario may be the Nintendo series that's closest here to its typical strength elsewhere, but you'd still be hard pressed to find another site with 3 Mario games in its top 10. Nintendo taking 14 out of 20 of our top 20 says it all I think, for the company as a whole. Smash
Bros., but that reasoning alone won't help, or else someone like Kirby
should be just as popular. It's probably also due to the design and
somewhat iconic nature of Samus herself. Perhaps the fact that she's
had pretty popular games since the NES days also helps. --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you congratulate BLACK TURTLE for winning the Guru Challenge." |

Because of Smash Bros., most likely. I guess that's possible. ...The idea that Donkey Kong may have been significantly benefiting from Smash all this time and still managed to perform, well, like Donkey Kong has amuses me. Last
year we only had one Multi-Platform poll, and only the winner (CoD:MW2)
made it to the big Game of the Year poll. Dragon Age only got there
because it got a second chance from the Best New Original Title poll,
despite losing to AC2 and Arkham Asylum in the Multi-Platform poll. That's...pretty stupid, actually. Ignoring for the moment that Dragon Age got 2 chances to qualify, why do we even have a Best New Original Title poll when all the other ones until the overall are based on platform? We don't have a best sequel or best remake or anything. Dragon Age did do well in the Game of the Year poll, I guess, but I'd bet on AC2 and Batman managing the exact same thing. So I'd assume only the winners of each Multi-Platform poll this year make it to the first Game of the Year poll. Meaning FFXIII is out regardless. --- Black turtle beat me, o noes! |

Mario
may be the Nintendo series that's closest here to its typical strength
elsewhere, but you'd still be hard pressed to find another site with 3
Mario games in its top 10 I wouldn't be surprised if they were. All 3 of those are absolutely huge, and they'd be popular elsewhere. SMB3 did great on Gamespy for what it's worth, and I wouldn't expect the relative popularities of the games to change much between sites. That's not the greatest evidence, but I see no reason to think that the classic Mario games would not dominate everywhere. --- "Ahem! Metroid Prime is pretty disproportionately popular here. On most other sites Half-Life 2 and Fallout 3 would destroy it. I thought Mario games were extremely popular across the entire Internet, especially the SMB3/W/64 trio. Legend of Zelda isn't as much: you wouldn't see WW or TP doing as well but OoT, LttP, MM, and even the original LoZ to a lesser extent shouldn't deviate much. As far as the Metroid series goes...I personally lump Samus into the same category as Kratos, Dante, and Ryu Hayabusa in getting more strength from character design than from the character's actual games (this fits well with what I think to, I like Samus more for her character design and the entire concept as opposed to her games or any iconicism, even though Super Metroid and Prime are among my all-time favorites and SSBM isn't too far behind either game). Next she draws strength from being iconic like Sonic, Mega Man, and Ryu from Street Fighter, then from being a Smash leech like Zelda or Ganondorf (explains why she can SFF them, too), and THEN from her games, which aren't very mainstream aside from MAYBE Other M (which was the most aggressively marketed game in the series), and I bet Metroid Prime gets a lot of strength just from being one of the best games on the GameCube, which basically seems to be GameFAQs' pet system by now. You think Resident Evil 4 or Tales of Symphonia would be as strong as they are if they were PS2-exclusives? To be fair though the Metroid series as a whole has done very well in both 2010 contests; none of the franchise's entrants has put up any disappointing performances and they both have plenty of impressive ones of their own (such as Samus breaking 45% on a character who would destroy her on just about any other site). I think it boosted somehow, maybe due to Other M's aggressive marketing and Metroid Prime's rerelease. I would seriously pick Super Metroid to beat StarCraft now. I wouldn't be surprised if Super Metroid beat MGS4, either. --- Currently Playing - Star Fox 64, Smash Bros. Melee Next Games Up - Resident Evil 4, Okami |
