GameFAQs is full of gamers that pay attention to the gamingsphere. Black Ops was always going to be popular here, but after the catastrophe that was MW2 and Activision? Yeah. It's going to be weaker just on principle alone.

From: PartOfYourWorld | #389
Seems like it for most years I can remember, but maybe not this time. In terms of pure hype, FFXIII led the way in 2010.

FF13 didn't do nearly as well with professional review scores (and those absolutely matter in GotY poll voting, people go with what is perceived as a good or at least 'big' game all the time) and has a lot of time to simmer. Release it a month ago and it probably sweeps the polls. The hype has had plenty of time to die down and be replaced with discontent.

Golden Sun > Galaxy 2?

Other M was #21 and Monster Hunter was #23.
Wow would this so not happen at GameFAQs. Why is TP so strong again?

You do realise that list was just two guys' opinions right? In a poll, it wouldn't happen anywhere.

You do realise how absurdly stacked this poll is right? Take a look at the PS3 poll. Notice how Heavy Rain has 25%. That game would lose to everything from Kirby up, and would probably struggle with NMH2 and TvC. Then look at what's in third. Gran Turismo. A game with "amazing" performances in polls like this one:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3719

If anything Galaxy 2's performance here clinches it as the GotY winner unless ME2(or RDR I guess, but that's unlikely) turns out to be a total monstar. My point about the PS3 poll is this: Galaxy 2 has almost as high a percentage as GoW3, with arguably the most stacked GotY poll the site has ever seen.

As for the poll itself, loving this. Everything's looking somewhat respectable with such absurdly steep competition, love NMH2 not flopping, love Goldeneye doing well, love MH3 beating major Nintendo series, love Galaxy 2 looking beastly, shame about S&P2 but there you go...

Killer year for the Wii.

Ok, have you forgotten about the multiplatform poll? The two best games of the year - FFXIII and Red Dead Redemption - were not released on the Wii, and both of them should smash Galaxy 2 (were it not for Nintendofaqs).

Galaxy 2 is doing over 6% worse here than GoWIII did in its poll. And you think Other M would beat Heavy Rain? Hell no...GameFAQs can go to hell for that one.

Maybe the Monster Hunter series has some sort of tiny fanbase here? I remember Cave Story losing to a Monster Hunter game in the vote-ins for this contest (lol GameFAQs).

Oh yeah this is going to sound funny, but after my midyearly exams were done in late September, this is how my day went:

*wakes up*

*plays Other M for a few hours*

*does a few hours of SAT prep*

*does some non-gaming entertainment*

*works on school holiday homework*

*more Other M*

Heavy Rain is not some mega-hit in terms of sales OR reception, and tbh it's not very good or well-regarded. It shot for the stars, and crashed down to Earth. Like the game, but yeah, it has bad voice acting, horrible writing, stiff gameplay... Seriously, Other M gets a lot of flak for its story, but it was leagues ahead of Heavy Rain for writing.

My point is, no way Heavy Rain is beating a Metroid title. It merely doubled Gran Turismo.

Gran Turismo. Seriously, do a search for Gran Turismo in GameFAQs polls and watch the hilarity ensue.

And Monster Hunter's pretty big, especially since Tri has the online component that's given it a lot of staying power. It sold really well and got great reception, so it's no surprise it's doing well.

But to reiterate

Gran Turismo

DKC and Monster Hunter are better than Gran Turismo, but they're not very good. DKC2 did this in '09:

SMG2's definitely ahead of God of War III, but whatever wins the multiplatform poll (polls? O.o) has a good chance of beating it.

Heavy Rain sold well and was well-received, for one. What you think about the game doesn't matter.

That game would lose to everything from Kirby up, and would probably struggle with NMH2 and TvC

This is the most absurd thing I've seen here in a while. You would have to be an insane Wii fanboy to believe that any of these games outside of SMG2 have any sort of GotY poll strength. Again, what you think doesn't matter - these games simply don't have GotY precense. Gran Turismo would probably get 2nd in this poll based on hype alone.

Heavy Rain was a Game of the Year nominee at IGN and Gamespot, and I think it won overall GOTY at some other site.

I've seen two YouTube LP's of Heavy Rain and no, it seems far better than Other M.

Random: Rank the Dreamcast games we've seen in these contests. Here goes my ranking:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Sonic Adventure 2
(Sonic Adventure)
(Resident Evil: Code Veronica)
Skies of Arcadia
Soulcalibur
Shenmue
Jet Grind Radio

I'm probably missing SOMETHING, good lord. Here's what I remember were IGN's top 10:

1) Marvel vs. Capcom 2
2) Jet Grind Radio
3) Virtua Tennis
4) Crazy Taxi
5) Soulcalibur
6) Samba de Amigo
7) Chu Chu Rocket!
8) Skies of Arcadia
9) (lol I forgot)
10) Space Channel 5

Code Veronica was #15, and no Shenmue or Sonic Adventure game was on the list at all.

Speaking of which, what the hell were Code Veronica and Vagrant Story doing missing our contest? I guarantee you that they'd be stronger than at least a quarter of the bracket (I'd at least take Vagrant Story over Civ4, for example).

Hard to say which poll has stronger competition. I'd take an average game in this poll over an average game yesterday. Nintendo crushes on name alone - Kirby, Metroid, and Goldeneye Remake would mop the floor with Gran Turismo and 3D Dot Game Heroes. Donkey Kong would probably give Heavy Rain a right good 1v1 flogging as well. But this isn't 1v1, and there's way more SFF in this Nintendo poll, so Kratos vs. Mario could still be an alright clash.

I wonder if HG/SS can beat both lol

I'm not going to get into Heavy Rain, though I cannot see it beating a Metroid title.

But Gran Turismo would utterly flop here. It's looked abysmal in every poll it's been in. You talk about hype but the thing is, GT is not for GameFAQs. It's not the kind of thing the site goes for. We've seen it fail countless times, so you'd think that would have sunk in now. Even in sales, it's entirely dependent on its amazing European and Australian numbers.

The fact that GT5 did so well is the tip-off that all was not well in that PS3 poll. The only reason it even did that well is because it had very little in competition. Put it in a decent field, and watch it pull 3-5% like the others.

Also SMG is on track to equal, perhaps even beat, GoW's votes with a lower percentage. That's everything in these polls. If a game can pull higher votes in a poll with higher average votes per game and higher votals overall, you can bet that it's stronger. The relative votals will also be a lot higher than last year's Wii poll, so I look forward to seeing the system poll, Wii could return to 2008 levels here, definitely.

Absolute votals have been sucking in general though.

Gran Turismo is certainly ass on this site, but the poll you linked isn't the correct one to prove that point. That was a PSP GT, which is a lot weaker than GT5 should be.

A better representation of the series's strength would be the vote-in, where GT3, one of the biggest games in the series lost to Guitar Hero 2:

Time for 'lol GotY/12-way' X-stats.

If we assume GT5 = Monster Hunter Tri, which isn't unreasonable given that GT3 only got 52.4% on a PSP Monster Hunter game, and if anything is being kind to GT5, God of War III barely beats Galaxy 2. I think this poll says more about DKCR being really well-received than anything.

PSP

There's your problem.

Monster Hunter Tri was the Wii's big game for Q1, and it has a big running fanbase due to its online. Remember, this was the site's number 1 game for some time.

Also I'd also argue 3 to be stronger than 5. I'd combat the hype argument with "disappointment", while 3 was more well-received in the long-term.

The problem with GT5, which pushes it below even GT3, is that it took 6 years to develop. Hype can only take you so far, and this is also why Duke Nukem Forever will bomb critically if it ever actually comes out.

If the site is losing so many younger voters, I'm taking Chrono Trigger to win our next (OOT/FFVII-less) games contest.

There's clearly a good reason why the average age of the people on this site is going up. When the boards were first created in 1999, someone back then would have to be born in 1978 just to be 21 years old at the time. An age poll from 1999 showed that a huge majority of the people were under 18 at the time.

This is significant because video games didn't really get any mainstream popularity until the late 1980s and early 1990s. Another poll on this site shows that about 96% of the site was under 10 years old when they played their first game. I mean this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2195

So my guess is that back in 1999, most of the people on that site started playing video games back when they first got mainstream popularity. That makes most of the people under 18 at the time. The average age of this site has gone way up since then because of many people staying on the site and growing older. At the same time, new people coming to this site aren't as young as the people that game to this site back in 1999 and earlier.

The site's aging. We can see this looking at the "how old are you polls". I'm not going to copy/paste ALL of them but look at this:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=21

The core of the site appears to be the exact same group as always(not necessarily the same people, mind) while it isn't attracting people 15 and below anymore.

Okay, since I'd feel silly making a new topic for this, I'm putting this here.

After I had to send my laptop in for repairs, I ended up letting the Contest Electoral College topic slip. Looking at my previous records, we were through 99 matches when last I'd updated, and the standings were:

96-3
Oregon

95-3-1
Delaware

95-4
Maryland
Washington D.C.

94-5
Arizona
Louisiana
Massachusetts
Nevada
Pennsylvania
Washington

93-5-1
Connecticut
Kentucky

93-6
California
Florida
New York
North Carolina
Virginia

92-6-1
New Jersey
Tennessee

92-7
Alabama
Arkansas
Illinois
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Texas

91-7-1
Mississippi

91-8
Minnesota
New Mexico
Ohio

90-7-2
Maine

90-8-1
Colorado
Idaho
Missouri
Nebraska

89-7-3
Montana

90-9
Georgia
Hawaii
Michigan
North Dakota

89-8-2
Alaska

89-10
New Hampshire

88-9-2
Vermont

87-11-1
Indiana

86-10-3
Iowa

87-12
Kansas
Utah

86-11-2
Wisconsin

86-13
South Dakota
Wyoming

85-13-1
West Virginia

Any calculations of Electoral Vote totals will still be done using the old values, a specification which is now needed because the 2010 census has since resulted in certain states gaining or losing value.

Match 100 was God of War vs. Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 took the electoral vote 522-16, losing out on Arkansas, Hawaii, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Melee then swept Match 101, and Brawl did the same in Match 102 (though the map is curiously listed with Match 103's participants). The outcome is the same, though, as Twilight Princess also scored a sweep. Match 104, however, was the Kingdom Hearts duel, and it was much closer. 331-204 was the final in favor of Kingdom Hearts II, with Alabama, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming all on the original's side and Delaware split.

Final Fantasy X took Match 105 in a sweep, but Final Fantasy IX ended up on the losing end of the popular and Electoral votes against KOTOR, taking only the 217 votes of Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah. Match 107 was another sweep, Resident Evil 4, and Portal took Match 108 by the score of 495-43, losing out in Alabama, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Wyoming. This finally gave Wyoming some separation at the bottom of the list.

Match 109 saw Paper Mario take Alaska, Delaware, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Wisconsin from MGS 3, while Maine and West Virginia split (Maine tying Iowa and Montana for Most Indecisive). As for MGS 4 vs. SotC...well, actually this wouldn't be too surprising. SotC won this one 327-202, after winning 326-212 against MGS2. Many of the dissenters were the same.

Favored MGS both times:
California
Florida
Georgia
Hawaii
Illinois
New Jersey
New York
Washington D.C.

MGS 2 > SotC > MGS 4:
Alabama
Arkansas
Connecticut
Indiana
Kansas
Rhode Island
South Carolina

MGS 4 > SotC > MGS 2:
Massachusetts
Mississippi
Nevada
West Virginia
Wyoming

MGS 4 = SotC > MGS 2:
Louisiana

SMG2, DKCR, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, No More Heroes 2, Red Steel 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors(probably should have been here over S&P2 >_>). Its often made fun of because all the shovelware and Baby Party and s***, but 2010 kicked ass for the Wii, gaming-wise.

Of course this year, there's just Skyward Sword but hey, we didn't know KEY and DKCR were coming out in 2010 until E3! Give it time!

Let's Plays are a pain in the ass if you want to make them not look like ****. Then again, I'm talking as someone who's constantly plagued with technical issues that continue prolonging my planned LP.

Video walkthroughs are fine, but I'd much rather see a Wiki-style set-up for each game. It'd be much easier for people to contribute certain aspects, especially snippets of info too small to get their own FAQ, and make one incredibly comprehensive guide. Let there be a certain threshold so that established contributors can edit without restrictions, while others would need to have their changes approved, perhaps by a few people added on to oversee this (if C-Net doesn't mind putting down a few extra bucks).

Lots of series have their own comprehensive Wikis, but imagine having all those Wikis in just one site. Having one easy-to-find source for these Wikis, in one of the largest gaming sites around, where people can easily get together and work toward a definitive source of information for a game, encompassing everything about that game.

That's the direction GameFAQs needs to move toward.

The important thing to remember is that DKCR's sales are pretty nuts, and it lived up to the series' reputation in the eyes of fand.

It being strong isn't surprising.
