BEST OF 2010: Best PC Exclusive
Voted: StarCraft II
Because it's fannnnnntastic.

Prediction: SC2 > Minecraft > WoW
SC's a legit GotY contender on any other site, but will be stomped down by the GameFAQs anti-PC bias in the overall poll. Still, it'll have no problems running wild on this weak field. Civ is the natural choice for #2, but I think there are too many similar options, plus the way 4 bombed has shaken my faith. Minecraft's my upset pick- it's been one of the Top 50 FAQs for the last 3 months straight and stands out from these other options pretty blatantly. Unless you feel strongly about SC/WoW/Civ, it's probably getting your vote. I'd love to take Civ > WoW, but despite all the hate this is an ideal setting for it (10 way multipoll that will draw low votals), so it would be really embarrassing for it to miss the top three.

Reaction: Dang, upset nearly paid off! Great showing from Minecraft to make it that close, but I've got to give WoW some props as well, didn't figure it could hang in there so well against SC2. As for SC... ehh, I expected a decent bit more, but I still think it could provide a respectable showing in the Overall, where it will be the most "stand out" option available, w/ that dedicated fanbase. But yeah, will never be a contender.

BEST OF 2010: Best PlayStation 3 Exclusive
Voted: Heavy Rain
It'll win GotY next week, then the Oscar next month!

Prediction: GoW 3 > Heavy Rain > Gran Turismo 5
Ugh, this is impossible to say beyond (what should be) the dominating win for Kratos. Guess I'll side with Heavy Rain just because even though it's not a "GameFAQs kind of game" it at least has some buzz behind it, which is more than I can say for any other option. Dot Heroes had that "old school Zelda" buzz, but it died out so quickly that I can't see it carrying over to January. Suppose I have to go GT5 for the bronze, since people are at least aware of it even though all anyone's actually saying is "Need For Speed is so much more fun."

Reaction: Whoaaa, a perfect sweep, and by a landslide! Not such a big deal I guess, as it turns out everything past Dot Heroes is super fodder, but still pretty proud of myself. Now, I thought GoW would be way further ahead of Heavy Rain than this, but I'm going to chalk that up to Rain impressing moreso than Kratos dropping the ball. Although, these ARE pretty terrible votals... (3k behind a very weak DS field) Guess we can eliminate GoW as a contender as well, but I'm pretty sure we'd all done that already!

It could still have a close match with the winner of that poll. Black Ops will probably overperform because it was released near the end of the year. We've had discussion in here before about games released near the end of the year overperforming in GotY polls. Out of the 30 games that finished in the top 3 of their respective GotY poll for the year, this was the distribution of games for each quarter:

Q1 games - 4
Q2 games - 1
Q3 games - 5
Q4 games - 20

It's an easy landslide for Q4 games (last 3 months of the year).

Because it's sweeeeeeet.

Prediction: Galaxy 2 > DKCR > Goldeneye
Oh wow, a chance for Goldeneye to prove its "Top 15 Game on This Website" worth! Except that wait a minute, NO IT ISN'T! Literally 10% of the GE (as in the actual game) fanbase has picked up this new game due to fear over a Wii shooter semi-remake, and I don't blame them. And the brand recognition of the GE name is great, but Metroid/Donkey Kong Country/Kirby aren't exactly lacking in name recognition either. But it at least stands out enough to sneak out a Bronze... maybe? Galaxy should dominate this poll just because Nintendo SFF is always worse than other kinds, but I don't think it posts THAT huge of a blowout just because this is much better competition than we saw from the PS3 or PC.

Reaction: Whoa, perfect again! Guess GE could still technically be caught by Metroid or Monster Hunter (whaaa?), but it seems like more of a Day Vote entrant so if anything I'd expect it to chop percentage on DK. Very nice result for DKC! And Galaxy, ehhh, I'm sure this is going to be called "underwhelming" but as I said earlier, this is by far the stiffest competition we've seen so far. I still feel good about it putting up a solid enough number in the Overall to make the Final poll. (Where it probably gets beaten, as I've said all along.)

We just have to hope that this site anti-votes Black Ops if it makes it to the 10-way GotY poll, because I don't think GameFAQs would want to give the GotY to a CoD game 2 years in a row. Yet, Black Ops could still reach the 3-way GotY poll because it has legions of casuals that will gobble up these casual shooters like they are candy.

I think you're overestimating the strength of Black Ops, the game isn't touching the others normally. I also don't really believe being a Q4 game gives you a boost, maybe if you're a weak game so people may still remember you. The games from Q4 just happen to be the strongest usually. Go back to the GotY polls, I doubt you'd switch the top 3 for most of them regardless of when the game came out.

Since CoD4 and MW2 couldn't impress against PD and Dissidia recently, I don't have much faith in CoD:BO beating FF13 and ME2 -- especially with Halo Reach in the way. It's pretty clear the site has something against CoD now despite MW2's big win just last year.

Taking a quick look the only year you could really argue that a Q4 game benefitted was 2005 with Mario Kart DS though that year was overall bad.

Yeah, I was just about to echo this. This is the Wii's best year since... maybe ever, and definitely the best since 2007. The variety isn't that terrible either; it's loaded with platformers, but there's a fighting game, an MMO/RPG hybrid, some action games, a shooter, and even a shmup. Not bad. Sadly, it may be too little too late for the Wii. I still think it'll get worked in console of the year voting. Despite having what may be the best exclusive lineup of the year, it's still miserable for multiplats.

Maybe MW2's win actually jumpstarted the hate train. Regardless, it doesn't seem that CoD is as liked as it was a year ago, and Black Ops is probably a weaker entrant than MW2 in the first place. I thought it could still do well in a 10-way simply due to the nature of its fanbase, but even if it makes it through the gauntlet, it'll get wrecked in the final three.

Whaaaaaat? It sold 7 million in the first 24 hours and both versions have been in the Top Five for FAQs pretty much ever since then. Clearly SOMEONE was hyping/buying/playing this game, even here on GameFAQs!
