Basing your vote on whether or not it'll help push an all-fictional contest is over-analytical. It's just a bonus match. Is SB going to allow multiple Links in a contest because Adult Link crushed the rest? Would he allow more Links if CD-I Link did better? These are two of the most beloved figures of our demographic -- just vote for who you want. It's Christmas-time and he likes to give us bonus polls when he can...pretty simple, especially considering the timing of it.

I don't know if the bonus match will be 24 hours long. Keep in mind that Bacon already has set up his usual poll for tomorrow, the Christmas day poll, and all of the "Got Console?" polls that will run until the end of this year.

There are 2 possible ways that Bacon will do this bonus match:

1. Run 2 polls tomorrow, but each poll lasts for 12 hours. The bonus match would happen during the first 12 hours of tomorrow for a night match. During the second half of tomorrow, Bacon can run the poll that he had scheduled for tomorrow.

2. Bacon can do something similar to what CJayC did for the Link/Jay Solano match. That is, making a sticky topic on Board 8 that contains a poll and a match picture embedded inside the first post of the topic. This would not interfere with Bacon's poll schedule because the poll would not be on the homepage. It also allows for a 24 hour match, though.

It shouldn't be surprising that Brawl won. It's a game that intentionally targets the lowest-common denominator, skill-wise. People who are casual fans of both probably would be expected to like Brawl more - it has everything that they like about Melee and more and it's far more forgiving of mistakes (much more difficult to die at low percentages, better recovery for characters in general, more floaty characters in general, very easy to DC out of a lot of combos, etc.). And those people are more numerous, I think. Of course, Brawl still failed to even things up between the skilled and unskilled players, simply because even with those crutches given to unskilled players, it doesn't make up for differences in skill.

But those same things that make it appealing to casuals are achieved basically by taking away what made Melee fun as a competitive game. The problem was that with Melee, Sakurai intentionally tried to make the game better for hardcore players - but clearly didn't leave casual players behind. It is possible for a game to be a good competitive game and be accessible to people of varying skill levels. That's what we got with Melee, and what we were expecting with Brawl. Instead, Sakurai decided that he would rather sacrifice the things that made Melee better in exchange for making casual players feel like they suck marginally less. And in exchange, we got a game that is broken as a competitive game and needs fan patches to make it worth playing in a tournament setting.

Given what we were expecting, how it was hyped to us, and what was essentially a bait-and-switch that we got, it shouldn't be surprising that Brawl receives a lot of venom. I don't even think it's a bad game, per se. It's just very disappointing.

I think the things done to help ease mistakes were worth the benefits to the masses; dying at low percentages is balls in any SSB-game, recovery's difficult for many people just hopping in to play a match at a party (on top of the already-obtuse concept of using the ^B-attack for a triple-jump after you've used up/X/Y to jump twice, though I'd hate to see this concept leave now), and people were generally embracing a slower speed to return closer to SSB's pace before SSBB was released so falling slower than you did in SSBM shouldn't have been so bad.

I should clarify I don't mean to be against the idea of a game that pleases experts and casuals alike -- not many games can pull that off, but it's great when you can. SSBM gets big props for that. That said, it's not like SSB was ever intended to be a competitive fighter, SSBM's general spirit and marketing wasn't about technical fighting, and I still don't think SSBB ever meant to take itself that seriously either. I forget who said it (Ulti maybe), but SSBM being such a deep fighter for tourney-fans was a great mistake. If future SSBB-games allow great tournaments, I think that's excellent. Likewise, if future Mario Kart games allow great tournaments, I applaud them. It's just not the intention of the series.

I get bitterness and disappointment, and I don't 100% disagree with most complaints brought against it -- just the volume of them. I still feel like this level of hate's largely manufactured. Call it bait-n-switch if you wish, but you're asking the series to not return to the direction it's always been intended for. SSBB's not perfect, but it's hardly the anti-christ. Take out tripping in the next SSB-game, and probably the most legitimate damage has been fixed. Gently push toward SSBM-inspired changes like speed afterward -- especially now that a new generation's had plenty of time to play and become familiar with it -- and we'll have another fantastic game.

Also, improve online. I'll side with yo on that, though that's more of a Nintendo-thing.

Have we ever had someone finish that low in the X-Stats in a contest where they actually faced the champion directly? Granted this is only half the bracket, but Wii Sports is second from the bottom. Generally, AntiBlowoutFAQs means that the bottom of the X-Stats is filled with games/characters that were soundly beaten by someone who was soundly beaten later on, likely by someone who was soundly beaten even later on. Example: last contest, Link had a very good match against Mario after Mario had put up big blowouts in divisional play, making the entire Mushroom Division look like ****, especially Mega Man's half because Mario even did fairly well against Mega and Mega crushed Hayabusa in the division semis.

Agreed. Ocarina of Time would get at least a tripling on any other Zelda game. The question is, how strong is Majora's Mask in comparison to Ocarina of Time indirectly?

Right now I'd kinda wish Jet Grind Radio didn't advance from those vote-in polls, and I can't believe I'm saying it. It's a possible last place for the x-stats. It's match is the only match I've seen where every place everywhere favored the same thing. Which was RE4 of course. Lets not forget that 95.55% people got the match right. No other match can top that. But seriously why JGR is one of the greatest games this decade, everyone who has played it loved it (if they played it on dreamcast and not GBA that is).

x-stats should go Majora > FFX > Brawl > Melee > TP > Fallout 3 > Prime > Half-Life 2 > GSC > Wind Waker > RE4 > MGS3 > SOTC > MGS2 > MGS4.

I'm thinking that if we ever have another Game Contest, we'll probably want to throw the four or five days of results out and not blindly follow the stats. they're kind of a mess, though in reality they're only off by a couple percent here and there. i

I don't really get the argument for authorial intent. Sakurai might have (okay, he explicitly did) intended for the series to be purely casual bait, but Melee showed that it could be both. Why would we want to go back when Melee showed that it was possible for the game to be both? Sakurai seems to believe that something having mass appeal and something having depth are diametrically opposed goals, and they're not.
