I checked the round 4 graph- evidently OOT got no ASV boost that day at all. The heavily diluted ASV went entirely to Melee and RBY apparently.

The matches involving Ocarina of Time and FFX in BGE 2009.... were they school days?

Round 4 was a weekday near the end of the school year with a diluted ASV. Round 5 was a sunday.

It's easy to see the logic behind MM being a proxy for OoT

There is no logic to that claim. The casuals do not study this bracket to see if OoT is in this contest or not. They come to this site to look for Halo Reach cheats or FAQs for Assassin's Creed and vote in whatever match is happening at the time.

Europe is shifting a bit further to FFX. It's cool how you can still see tiny shifts based on the voting times within a region. It's night in Europe and they're favoring FF.

Anyone want to give an estimate of how many votes MM needs to cut an update to win, or what percentage it needs from this point until the end of the match?

When speaking of comparing OoT to MM and FFVII to FFX, you need to keep in mind what console they are on. A lot of people got the N64 because Nintendo was still in it's heyday. PSX was an up and comer, but eventually almost everyone had it.

PS2 came out and dominated the industry, and was the best selling console of its generation. Many people migrated to PS2 and gave up on Nintendo (yours truly and many of my college friends).

Unfortunately I think Zelda Drone Syndrome is making this one closer than it should be.

I think MM needs to cut ~9.42 votes per update from here to the end to win.

MM needs 8.85 votes/update over the rest of the match, which is equivalent to about 51.3% for the rest of the match.

I'm not sure how many brackets there are, 3000 or so?. And of the 90,000 expected votes on top of those 3000 there are probably another 7000 or so that are casually following the contest, so of those I would say that there could be a proxy effect. But I do take that point, we are probably paying a little too much heed to this effect.
xp1337 | Posted 12/22/2010 11:12:18 AM | message detail
8.85? Wow, I'm really off. ...Oh, I know why. Yeah, I used 110 updates because I did 9 full hours plus 2 updates instead of 10 full hours minus two updates. lol me.

20 updates -12.1

Should be interesting! I guess it will come down to the votals. If they stay low FFX has this.

School's out here from what I know. This obviously isn't the case for the whole state, but from what I remember, CA schools get two weeks off for Winter Break that cover both Xmas and New Years. I believe that break started this week, because otherwise, there'd be class on Xmas Eve.

Schools are out. MM wouldn't have started cutting so early if the day vote wasn't going to be spread out through the day.

Problem is, we have no idea when this 'day vote' ends. MM could run out of steam at pretty much any time.

But shouldn't the SNV be just as diluted (if not more diluted) than the day vote? red sox said that last year, FFX didn't even start regaining percentage against OoT until the last half hour.
