SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

What would Samus or Mario being stronger than Cloud and Sephiroth change exactly? The amount which Link wins by in the final? If it was left up to the US, the strongest characters would be Snake and Nintendo characters which ends in Link pounding any Nintendo character he confronts into the ground.

If you remove Link, it changes plenty. Other than Mario vs Samus and Cloud vs Seph, any match involving those four would be unpredictable. Add in Snake, too.

Link's not going to be removed, so it really doesn't matter (if all we care about is the final that is). My opinion on the US being the worst region is just that, an opinion. It has nothing to do with "wanting to keep the contest the same forever", it has to do with me liking Cloud and Sephiroth and being a Final Fantasy fan. I vote for them because they're who I like, not because I enjoy seeing Cloud lose to Link every year.

I dunno, the 2009 stats are the best we've got (certainly better than 2004 stats by virtue of being 5 years newer). 4-way stats are frequently wrong, but it's hard to tell when and in what direction they'll err. All things considered they hold up surprisingly well (and I've said for a long time that Brawl overperformed in the round 3 match last year).

All things considered they hold up surprisingly well (and I've said for a long time that Brawl overperformed in the round 3 match last year).

They haven't held up surprisingly well. They've held up sporadically with high accuracy, and missed by galaxies in other matches. In ways that don't even make logical sense if you try and analyze the direction of the LFF (see MM vs. GSC as the most glaring example).

I'd rather trust my own personal logic and analysis, than 4-way stats. For instance the use of this contest's x-stats, and then trying to cross-compare like with the RE4 vs. HL2/MP stuff. Yes that type of analysis is shaky and will be off a lot, but I'd certainly roll with that before trying to roll with 4-way stats.

Especially since people just pick and choose whatever they want from 4-way stats to begin with. "Oh, I trust RE4 from this round! No whoops in retrospect RE4 from this round sounds better because it makes the 4-way stats look like less of a joke" The inconsistencies are way too consistently present.

They're really not worth bothering with. You'll just give yourself a headache and gain almost nothing of predictive substance. Except for the odd match where the stats just get lucky.

I think it probably gains...I dunno, 1.5% from whatever the highest point FO3 reaches is? (which will probably be around 7am or something) Does that sound too high? FO3 is pretty good in the day so I'm not really confident in my trends know-how here.

I was thinking Brawl could recover 3% from the nadir. That's what Sonic got against Snake in 2006, for example, and what SM64 got against CT. Maybe it should be lower because Fallout is balanced or day-oriented, but Smash is very very day oriented. Let's go with 2% I guess.

You have found the answer._

It's fair to question Brawl after this match. It's still got a long way to fall, and is probably going to end below FFX's percentage on RE4, in a 24-hour match. Giving FFX/RE4 another 12 hours would not likely have changed the percentages too much.

As far as Nintendo invincibility goes, the thing is Brawl isn't from Legend of Zelda. This doesn't have to be a proxy for Link vs. Cloud/OOT vs. FFVII. At the secondary level, Square has beaten Nintendo many times, including recently.

I still say watch out for MM though.
