And GameFAQs voters have shown they have intelligence in a lot of instances. Each voter is a person who has distinct tastes. It's just that a lot of them enjoy Zelda games more than most other games. OoT
is genuinely well-respected. Link really doesn't have much business
winning contests, musical language or not, and none of the other Zelda

No, Link has absolutely no business winning contests, let alone being the unbeatable powerhouse he has developed into. Look, I respect the Zelda series. Personally it bores me a little, but I respect its impact on gaming and the extraordinarily high production values of every major iteration in the series. OoT winning contests is understandable, same as with FFVII, much as I hate the latter. It's got that magic, both did a lot to bring people into their respective genres, both somewhat innovative, yeah. Grudgingly prepared to accept their place near the top of the tree, it's kind of hard NOT to if you're being fair about it. But
you know, all this talk about whatever game not deserving it is
ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Just because you don't think it does
doesn't mean the game doesn't have its place in the gaming world and
most notably, the hearts of fans. The vast majority of the bracket, perhaps the entire bracket, could be argues as game of the decade, and probably are game of the decade to someone. They're all pretty important, well loved games so I don't see why anyone would whine beyond simple intolerance for other's opinions. To expand, Mario has a similar lack of character but a) it's freaking Mario, he's just different to Link and b) Mario is very much mortal. Loses matches fairly often and only wins contests when the best competitors are removed. Link is just...yeah, sure, you grow a great attachment to him. Not denying that one. I'm discussing the motive behind those votes - and like I said, MM is OoT's inferior runt cousin. It should have no business winning this, but if it does, it does. another day, another drone argument! I ended up being fairly right about Chrono Cross having decent strength. I just didn't expect Majora's Mask to be approximately equal to TP, which is what it seems like it is. wish we could see TP vs. MM. it's like FF8 vs. FF10, right down to the order of release from its big brother (OOT being FF7 in this case) --- xyzzy |

GSC
was expected to be about as strong as or maybe a bit stronger than MGS4
during the day. GSC wasn't as strong as we thought but the MGS series
had proven to be even worse. What MM is doing today isn't really all
that much more impressive than what it did to GSC. Not to say this
result is bad or anything but most of the blame should go to MGS3 for

well, FF9 is probably a little bit underrated due to FF9/FF10. that means KOTOR likely still beats Mass Effect. I know I'd never take FF9 over Oblivion though since I'd take Oblivion over KOTOR pretty easily. --- xyzzy |

weird thing about the drone accusations is that TP is much more of an
OoT follow-up than MM, which was more of a side-story there to try

but you're forgetting one important fact. FFVII, OoT..LttP..Chrono
Trigger....these games are NOT in this contest. Someone has to win.
Melee/Brawl were fav...FFX is up there, MM isn't a million miles away
from those games. So you couldn't be more wrong. "Not a million miles away" instantly implies that you believe it is still a fair distance away from those games. Like I said, it's a main Zelda title so it has plenty of respect within the industry and high production values, don't get me wrong. Ultimately, though, it's still OoT's runt sibling in that regard. I strongly believe OoT not being in this contest is making it look better - people who would normally vote for OoT are going to migrate to Majora's Mask before anything else. And that is being a drone. In the end, it's only Majora's Mask. It's not GoaT or even GotD material*, it's at best a routine game of the year. And yet it may well win this thing. Ask yourself why that is - if you don't believe it winning (if it does) is due largely to the Zelda name, I honestly don't know what to say. BTW, in my point I was discussing the general success of the Zelda games in this contest, and why I believe the success of OoT at least is somewhat fair even if I don't personally think the game is all that good. Your response didn't really do or mean all that much. *By that I mean "objectively". Random dude having MM as his all time favourite game is irrelevant - stuff like SMB3, OoT, FFVII and maybe RE4 are games that usually come up in that sort of discussion. Majora's Mask? you're welcome to that opinion. I'm not saying MM is this terrible
game, I'm saying it's doing as well as it's doing because of the Zelda
name and if it wins, it will certainly be because of that.
Because it just isn't a GoaT or GotD contender by any usual means. That

There
really isn't that much from this decade. We eliminated 70% of our top
10 from contention......so it's natural the winner might not be that
impressive. Also, there is a huge gap between Majora's Mask and Ocarina
of Time. FFX got 34.5% on OOT last year while Brawl was holding OOT
back. In a fair match that's probably more like 31-32%.......even if MM
were to beat FFX on Wednesday, that would still only put it in the
31-32% area on OOT indirectly. For a direct sequel, that's very very low. FFVIII and Chrono Cross are the only games I can think of that match that. --- Nominate Crono so he can get a higher seed and avoid being fed to Clinkeroth early in the contest. |
