FFVII doesn't really need a PS3 style mega-remake.

I think I'd be pretty cool with a PSP one that mimics Crisis Core stylistically.

NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT.

ABSO ****ING LUTELY NO. THEY ALREADY WRECKED DISSIDIA BY PUTTING IT ON THE PSP. HOW DARE YOU EVEN SUGGEST THEY DO IT TO FFVII AS WELL.

I like how much more awesome our characterization of Link is than Nintendo's.

We aren't cowards like Nintendo, we just keep it real. I imagine King Link mostly mopes around his castle letting his servant red sox wash his feet until another Character/Game battle shows up. He's won so much its all he ever knows, and its the only thing he finds enjoyment in(to the point he had neglected his friends and loved ones and will probably die rich, powerful, and alone).

Square fans that have actually been playing the company's most recent games: based on those, can you tell me if THE REMAKE would even be good?

If by most recent games you mean XIV, then yeah, the Remake would be great, man. I can say that because I'm not a fanboy, and I can appreciate it for what it would be. Just a nice remake of a cool game, not the second coming.
ZFS | Posted 12/19/2010 9:52:01 PM | message detail
Yeah, a PSP remake of FFVII would be great, actually. It would cost a lot less and be a lot more profitable for Square, plus we'd get it quicker and it'd still be great fun. FFVII remake is definitely suited to the PSP - that's the right area they would need to do it justice. It'd be pretty fun having a traditional FF like that on the system.

I could see them bastardizing it into a Point-A to Point-B linear turd like FFX and FF13 have been.

No, a PSP remake would be a bad idea. If Square can no longer put its biggest games front and center on high powered home consoles where they belong- something is seriously wrong with their development processes.

I don't even like the game, but if a remake fixed almost everything I disliked I'd probably be tempted to at least try it. A PSP remake would be more reasonable and could still look great as far as graphics go. It would also cost far less.

Thinking about it, it's kind of funny how we've come full circle, in that games nowadays are sacrificing gameplay to support pretty graphics, but they won't see without those graphics.

something is seriously wrong with their development processes.

It took them six years to make a game that is mostly a long line of combat and melodramatic cutscenes.

Square-Enix's development cycle is atrocious.

Oh, Link would still win, of course. It isn't called NintenFAQs for nothing.

Setting: Link's throne room. Link is slumped over in his throne as his loyal servant red sox tries to cheer him up

lolz. Exactly.

Probably because we actually HAVE a characterization of Link!

But another problem is that FFVII really has a lot of flaws that could be overlooked or shoved aside on the Playstation, but will come to light on the PS3 and in the year 2010. I get the feeling a lot of the game would feel awkward instead of magical. I mean, parts of FFVII have always looked awkward from the outside, but as a player immersed in the game you don't notice. Much harder to create that atmosphere now.......atmosphere is everything.

Square-Enix's dev cycle is abysmal.

Square released FFVII-X in about 4 years and Squaresoft took 6 years for FFXII and 4-5 for FFXIII.

FF12 was a hugely ambitious game, and looking at the end result, the various previews, the fact that the director had a damn mental breakdown, etc and you can see Square's deviating from what it knew with 7/8/9/10 didn't go so well. Then there was the FFXIII mess of a development cycle, and the less said about FF14, the better.

Eh, that wouldn't be a real remake, though. I'm sure it'd be great, but it'd be just a safe upgrade. But that might be their best bet, and probably what they'd go for. They gotta start releasing V and VI for every platform ever made first, though. They're almost done with IV.

Great job by FFX here! Nice job by what would be a worthy GOTD. Though after the Giants game I'm a bit paranoid it'll somehow blow this match >_>

I was telling people that they were underrating FFX (all those people saying TP>FFX like it's a given), but I certainly didn't expect this. Brawl is still the clear favorite but at least a new challenger has appeared!

Just curious, what other games have taken such a hit for trying to become more casual-friendly than its predecessor? The only one I can think of off-hand is Yoshi's Story, which was still fun in its own right but ultimately deserves the hell it caught.

I know the Melee/Brawl stuff ended a few pages back, but I just wanted to comment here. It would seem that this reaction from the hardcore community is not an uncommon one. Some games I can think of where there were similar feelings from the competitive community in the jump from one game to another:

Starcraft->Starcraft 2, Team Fortess Classic->Team Fortress 2, Modern Warfare->Modern Warfare 2

I'm not saying that there isn't some validity to these complaints, but I think it's true that the hardcore competitive community likes to get somewhat set in its ways and is weary of anything that perturbs the nature of the game too much in their eyes. Maybe there are a lot of counter-examples I'm not aware of though?

Then prepare to be baffled because I'm not sure why TP > FFX became such a given.

It'd be a good match, in all likelihood. I recognize FFX is the underdog, and I'm fine with that.

But do we really think RE4/KH2 is 50/50 1-on-1 nowadays?
