I know I said it was obviously the strongest on the podcast, but I'm not sure that's true. I think it's benefiting SO HEAVILY from the night match here and if it were a day match, the bandwagon would have run it over just like it did MGS4.

I think the bandwagon overall had muddied what the strongest MGS game is. I still feel like it's gotta be 4 > 3 > 2 for some reason.

It's a well-known fact that MGS2 has massively mixed reception due to Raiden. MGS3 is assumed to be stronger than MGS4, though there's no definitive proof to prove it one way or the other. However, both games are assumed to be stronger than MGS2.

The fact that MGS2 is equal in strength to MGS3 and MGS4 - two games held in much higher esteem - is the *exact reason* that people are calling MGS fans drones!

Of course that's mostly in jest. But there is some truth to it. MGS games are pretty similar, but then, so are Pokemon games and such. Yet they diverge largely in strength. Pretty much every series with 3 or more games has a significant divergence in strength between the strongest and weakest.

The three MGS games in the bracket are startlingly similar in strength, even though their reception and "respect factor" varies greatly. MGS2 has no business being as strong as the other two, yet it clearly is. I wouldn't be surprised if even the original MGS isn't all that much stronger than MGS2, which is pretty hard to understand via any sort of logic other than "drones LOL".

Last time round it was pretty clearly 1 >= 4 > 3 > 2. This time round they're all much closer, but I'd expect 3 > 2 >= 4.

Depends what you think of Paper Mario and Diablo II, I suppose. I'd be amazed if 3 wasn't easily the strongest next time round after its 3DS release.

I'm surprised this match has been as close as it's been, because wire-to-wire matches are so difficult to pull off in night matches because of Europe and Asia. That's because Europe and Asia often heavily deviate from the worldwide result, causing one game to have a clear advantage in the night vote.

MGS2 may have some haters, but in exchange, I think it also produced the most loyal fans.
Not sure how to say this, but it's more than just thinking 2>the rest. It's like... thinking it's one of your favorite games of all time, and you'd vote for it over most anything.

I don't think Europe has anything to do with the vote increases on MGS3, since SotC's lead in Europe has been staying steadily over 51%. NA, on the other hand, has been slowly bleeding percentage in favor of MGS2.

There is Asia and Oceania that are both contributing to MGS3's lead increases, but it's not a whole lot because North America and Europe are limiting the damage that Asia and Oceania are doing.

good match so far. go SOTC! it might be the only thing interesting left in this contest besides FFX's path (RE4, the Zelda winner, and even then it's just another Square game). SOTC probably takes the morning and would take any rally, so this is anyone's match.

I think it's fair to say that there's some bandwagoning here. this entire division is done for stat-wise. SOTC owning the early vote at the expense of brackets is something that has not happened at all this contest.

I think people are overconfident in Majora's Mask. Pre-contest I figured WW would be stronger. Right now I give MM a slight edge, but that's really only because I think N64 game>Gamecube game. I see people favoring MM very heavily here though, I'm not sure where this MM faith comes from. I wouldn't be surprised at all if WW won.

This match is black sheep vs. black sheep - with WW being the black sheep due to early backlash, and MM being the black sheep simply due to being overlooked and largely ignored at the time. But both games have aged well and feelings are much more positive towards them now.

Also how are people seriously considering MM as a finalist? Are people completely overlooking the fact that Ocarina of Time would almost certainly get 70+% on GSC before SFF? 55% on GSC is not something I consider finalist caliber.

From: UltimaterializerX | #1005
It really isn't. I say this as the biggest fan of the game there is.

There is not one thing though that indicates MGS2 is weaker than these other games.

MGS3 will overperform a bit relative to them because this is a night match. The other two had day matches which is normally bad news for MGS games.

When you take that into account - and the fact that this mach isn't over, SOTC can still win - the three games are *startlingly* equal in strength. So yeah, MGS2~=MGS4~=MGS3. Pretty clear cut really. I don't really see where a debate could come in.

Unless you bring in 4-ways, which for one thing are old and not accurate to this year (MGS4 has dropped), and of course there's 4-ways so not very valid anyway. The current picture is the relevant one.

since they usually put up a minuscule percentage of the votals.

You are right about that. For the last continent poll, Asia and Oceania both combined for 15.03% of the total votes during the 5:00-6:00 AM hour of that poll. So while Asia and Oceania don't contribute much overall, they could be more of a threat during the hours that they perform best in.

To be fair, OoT would probably 65/35 SSB and FFX in a 1v1 match. It and FF7 are pretty much in a tier of their own, and not really something that should be compared against in this contest.

I'm not going to comment on the rest of your post, because you're blatantly ignoring the bandwagon theory in an attempt to prove your theory, then dismissing 4way polls altogether to cement your opinion.

SotC has been losing ground in North America, but hasn't really had much effect on the overall result because North America is contributing less than 40% of the votes at this time of the day (based on the continent poll trend chart).

Yes OoT and FF7 are in a tier of their own, but I don't really see how people are so wowed by 55% on GSC. MM is plenty strong but I don't see it beating RE4 in a 24 hour match, let alone FFX in a 24 hour match. And both those potential matches would be 24 hours. And it's no lock to even get there.

Who here really thinks GSC would beat Portal (full match)? It would probably be close but I'd be surprised if Portal dropped that.

From: Greyfeld | #1153

Heh, really now, what is this attitude here. The "bandwagon theory" has El Zilcho evidence for it. I have no "point", I don't care how the MGS games stack up, I've never even played them. I'm going purely by what we can see with our eyes.

The only bandwagon SOTC got was in the first 5 minutes. It's a board-only bandwagon. It's pretty self-evident honestly. You are *really* stretching majorly hardcore to argue otherwise. The main difference between this and the other MGS matches is day/night, and that's a pretty small difference that's only meaningful because the matches are so damn close.

A theory like that requires evidence to prove it, not disprove it. The Null hypothesis does not add complexity.
