Is it just me, or does this match make anyone nervous about MM/GSC? I can't see Chrono Cross being weaker than Skies of Arcadia, and if this match were to end right now, that means Chrono Cross would give ****ing Final Fantasy XII a good match....which means MM blows FFXII out of the water worse than Portal did. Can GSC really match that?

It can. FF12 just isn't as strong as we thought it would be.

I understand anticipating other games. But to say that just about every other game coming out in the future is more anticipated than Portal 2 is blind hatred.

I didn't say every, I just said there were a lot. I don't "hate" Portal, it's good for what it was. I just don't understand the hype behind it being on the same level with what I consider truly great games. It felt more like something you look at differently and set to the side rather than comparing it with epic type games. It just doesn't leave me feeling the same.

Mass Effect being stronger than thought I'd wager. One other factor is that Portal is a big popular NA-centric game on GameFAQs. And so is Mass Effect so it was bound to avoid any kind of blowout. It's easier to blow out a game (like FFXII) when the NA audience is on your side. And it's a WRPG from Bioware so it's bound to have a staunch fanbase.

Portal is still stronger from last year thanks to that Valve sale where they were giving it away for free. Portal was never going to beat RE4, but there's no way Mass Effect 2 isn't having some effect here. The game clearly got a high seed because of people trying to nominate it and realizing they couldn't, so they just nominated the first instead.

It depends what you're aiming for. Assuming we're allowed to make a pick on match 127, your current maximum score is 101700. Even if you get every match from here to the end right, you'll finish 3rd at best. More likely 4th if ds3online doesn't choke too badly.

You can pretty much watch MGS cutscenes and follow the entire story. So no, not really. My little brother watched MGS1-3 without playing them before going into MGS4. My recommendation to him.

I think Kingdom Hearts applies too. Sure you could watch cut scenes, but then you miss out on plot battles unless you just watch a playthrough of the entire game or something.

If you just watch cutscenes, you generally miss out on a lot of important Codec conversations anyway.

Besides, it's stupid to watch cutscenes instead of playing the game.

Not if you need to play 3 entire games to understand the plot of the 4th. And I only own MGS3. Ironically, it's the only MGS I gave up on beating because the gameplay pissed me off.

For those forgetting why Portal 2 is hyped, Portal was one of the most quotable games of all-time (enough for SF64-fans to long for a true Star Fox-sequel) and won over seventy GotY-awards. Between that and introducing such a simple yet fun gameplay-mechanic, Portal's reputation is enough to drive Portal 2's hype-train...and this is before considering what Portal 2 brings to the table.

I understand the idea that Portal 2 shouldn't catch people completely off-guard like Portal did, but it's a bad idea to mistake that for not feeling the hype behind it. If Portal isn't already bigger for Valve than Half-Life, Portal 2's capable of sealing the deal. Don't let Portal 2 in some previous hype-poll fool you: when it gets close to the release date, it will be huge. Valve shelled out $25,000,000 to hype L4D2, and Portal 2 is going to be a far bigger game for them than that. As long as the game is quality -- and given that it's Valve, it's a good bet, especially since somebody there believes it's the best Valve-game to date -- we're probably going to hear about it for a long time to come.


If things like that can be predicted into the future well like that, anyway.

Watching the cutscenes can only be done for a few type of games. Otherwise, you miss on tons of necessary information. And yes, that excludes most RPGs since cutscenes are generally only uses for a few importants moments.

I know why, I'm just saying I personally don't see the appeal over several other games out there. It's been common knowledge the VGAs are rigged anyway, even before that result.

Also, who cares if a game is quotable? Zero Wing is plenty quotable but that doesn't mean it's anything more than it is. Not trying to compare the two or anything, I'm just saying that has very little bearing. If anything, Portal's quotes make it annoy me even more because of how overused they are on the internet.

Why would anyone think Portal 2 is just going to add more levels?

I remember playing through the game with developer commentary on and they constantly talked about how they were just scratching the surface of what could be done with Portal's new game play mechanics. It's not like first person shooting puzzle game is a long standing genre where you would expect nothing other than a graphics upgrade. I'm expecting everything to be greatly expanded on, which is why I'm hyped up for it.

It's a flaw of the puzzle genre really, sure you can add more obstacles and a few more rules, but you can't really add or change much without changing the entire basis of the game.
