Going back to Melee/Brawl, Melee being older was never a real advantage. Melee's advantage is that it is more liked by the fanbase, and the side the core fanbase supports hardly ever loses. But we'll see- and either way KH/KH2 means almost nothing. May as well argue based on SMB3/SMW.

I'm beginning to have serious doubts about FFX in the finals as well. Apart from looking overrated in 2009 thanks to fortunate Nintendo SFF, it has had bad early votes twice now. That will be compounded against RE4 and especially Pokemon. Luckily, it still has the night advantage against RE4 and a questionable semifinal opponent - GSC or Zelda may simply not have the intrinsic strength to take FFX down.

Was all psyched at KHII winning in my battle brackets. Then I went and saw that somehow two of them selected KHI.

I went over all of them right before the match to make sure they were KHII.

Argh.

What about Missingno?

That's the point. If Crono had gotten a 1 seed as he deserves as one of the 8 strongest characters (or even a 2 seed), he wouldn't have faced Missingno in round 1. And regardless of how well he did against others, he wouldn't have been limited by running into Sephiroth in round 3.

Those most popular polls were less illuminating than I expected. MM and FFX bringin' in the votes, I guess! Other matches pretty random.

I agree with you, red sox. Melee was almost unequivocally loved by the fanbase, and I don't think the bulk of that love simply disappeared after Brawl's release and the Wii's fall from grace. Melee was #6 on that top 100 list back in 2005. I have doubts about Brawl assuming a similar position in an updated list.

RE4 got 65.5% on GTA. FFX will come close to that on Golden Sun which already easily dispatched a GTA game.
abdou | Posted 12/10/2010 9:58:38 PM | message detail
FFX will probably end with 63% maybe even 64% which isn't bad at all. GS is pretty strong. That early vote is hideous though.

That's only true for FFVII. FFX's power hour isn't quite that bad, so it should still be stronger at night than in 24 hours. But it probably won't be a big difference, true, and people frequently overrate the effect of day/night on matches.

Yeah true I guess, I don't think there's much difference between and FFX day match or night match though because the more dilluted anti-votes in the day balance out with it's super strong 3:30-6 hours.
red sox 777 | Posted 12/10/2010 9:59:01 PM | message detail
It's been brought up before that Smash and KH might have LFF'd each other. That seems to be borne out by KH doing 2% better on FFX in the round 2 match than the round 3 match with Melee. Speaking very roughly, if you give FFX/KH 4 points of LFF as they seemed to have based on MGS2, and KH/SSBM 2 points of LFF, that puts Melee around 53% on FFX in 2009.

Surprisingly little, I think. Cloud was above 44% on Link within the first couple of minutes, may have even hit 45% briefly, I don't remember. Right now FFX is facing the full brunt of FF anti-voting and the Nintendo Power Hour, but come the end of the contest, when it's up against big Nintendo games that could beat it, some of the voters will remember which company wins every contest. (They've finally learned. Took long enough, but judging by Link's horrid early vote last contest, they've learned!)

38%? Are you for real right now...?!?

Man, looks like San Andreas has been redeemed! And, of course, Vice City will be redeemed as well once RE4 beats FFX in an Ulti-style blowout. (I gotta believe!)

And personally, I still think Melee/Brawl is a complete toss-up. Yeah, KHII winning was a shocker (and one that fried my bracket), but Halo CE still thrashed Halo 3.

I think at least a few people expected that, though. I bet RE4>FFX would have been a much more popular upset (meaning way more than 2% of the Guru would have taken it) in a day match.

Brawl's day matches overrate it just as much. Now Melee, there's a game that has put up impressive performances despite being handicapped by getting only its worst time! (/bias)

Although, it's true. We can intellectually adjust for day/night, but games often feel worse just because they got the wrong time zone consistently.

Yeah, but it's one thing to understand it and another thing to see it. This is the third match in a row that the night vote is going to keep FFX from looking like a flop.

It's not like it would have lost this in a day match. I mean, I know for sure I would have taken RE4 in a day match. It's not like I'll feel cheated if it loses 51/49 at night. Rather, I'll feel good knowing it would likely win a day match and should win any match as soon as Square releases one more ****ty FF game like versus XIII.

(3)World of Warcraft
(14)The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

(7)Rock Band 2

(6)Gears of War 2
(11)Advance Wars

Man, the casuals would go nuts.

I'll feel cheated if RE4 loses considering RE4 potentially wins the contest if it doesn't get handicapped there. RE4 is one of those games I could easily see doing better in the later rounds thanks to respect voting.

I don't see RE4 beating Smash. If it can beat FFX in any time period, that would strongly suggest that FFX would get beat fairly easily by Melee. Maybe RE4 could get some respect votes going against Brawl, but I think respect votes are just part of your base strength, basically.

Well, last round, RE4 started off like a mad game then bled throughout the entire night and most of the mornings. If it's facing FFX in a night match, it certainly isn't in a favorable situation.

haha, I just read this topic. the tone of it has shifted dramatically, and now KP is Biolizarding all over the place because Golden Sun is losing to FFX. brilliant.

I feel so weird here. FFX is doing what it needs to do. if you set VC and SA equal, FFX should end up looking better than RE4 .and yet I feel like this is a tragic performance. damn you Golden Sun

I was actually considering taking RE4 over FFX before I realized that it's a night match. If FFX wins that match, it's most likely thanks to the day/night difference.

That's a good thing, too, because that would be one of the few matches that vindicates the contest format.

Now that people are actually thinking it might win, I'm going "Oh ****, I actually don't want that to happen"

Online play alone makes Brawl better. The Stage Builder is a major plus, too.

Sure, Brawl's character roster could have been better, but there's no question the game is an improvement over Melee.
