What I think today is telling is that MGS3 probably was never really that close to RE4, despite getting similar scores back in BGE 2009.

I think I'd pull the trigger on MvC2.

I'm not sure what you guys were really expecting from MGS3 though! It's strong, but it's not elite. We saw that last year already. This isn't some "MGS is weaker now" stuff. MGS1 was always going to be the strongest one by a decent margin, despite whatever the last Games Contest said. MvC2 is pretty decently legit, too, from the looks of it. Expecting a doubling from MGS3 here seems a bit much.

Also, this "FF looks bad this contest" is nonsense, too! Borderlands >= Morrowind (Seriously, Morrowind isn't that strong. Why is beating Warcraft 3 suddenly an accomplishment, especially with how much we expect WoW to suck?), Vesperia > Valkyria Chronicles, etc. FFX's fine.

Sheesh, you people with your unrealistic expectations.

Well it seems fairly obvious. Gears of War 2 beat Soul Calibur 2 in the vote-in poll. And then PM beat the much stronger original GoW by almost as much as Oblivion beat Soul Calibur 2, in a night match no less. The next one is a day match, so I'm not really seeing much of a way TTYD can lose.

Analysis

This is another match where if you were anywhere else you’d get laughed at for debating this match, but the reality is World of Warcraft did not look great last round. Is Animal Crossing some hidden powerhouse or does World of Warcraft just not perform that well in this format? I feel it is a combination of the two, but more so that World of Warcraft just doesn’t perform well here.

I wasn’t that impressed with Paper Mario’s performance last round, sure it broke 70%, but it was against a game that was a fad midway through the decade that disappeared through time. Personally I was surprised Katamari Damacy even made the contest. With that said we have to remember that Paper Mario performed terribly last contest and while Metroid Prime was in that match the game would have had to suffer from SFF if it wanted to look respectable.

Animal Crossing wasn’t the most conventional game for fans on GameFAQs, but the game did make a splash win it first came on the scene. Sure characters like Tom Nook have flopped in character battles, but the game isn’t exactly made for character interaction. Animal Crossing was one of those games that no one would rank as their favourite game, but at the same time the game would have its fair share of fans.

The main question is could I see Paper Mario match the same percent World of Warcraft did before SFF and the answer is possibly. If this was TTYD I may have felt more comfortable, but I don’t have as much faith in the original and while the board seems pretty confident in Paper Mario taking this match I really don’t see it winning by all that much.

Still doubting whether MvC2 is legit. Yeah, it beat a Mario game that flopped in the 2009 GotY polls and might be the weakest Mario platformer to have ever graced a contest. Not to mention fighting games aren't that well-respected on this site (see SFIV)...though MvC2 may prove to be the exception here...

I was reading the analysis topic, 58-59 for PM is crazy. I don't think PM would get 65-66% on Animal Crossing before SFF and that's before you consider that anti-votes become weaker as your opponent becomes stronger.

Katamari is a freaking PUZZLE game. The only puzzle game that seems to amount to anything on this site is Portal, which I consider to be more of an action adventure (aka a first-person one like Metroid Prime is). It has every reason to be terrible fodder. Animal Crossing could 60-40 it for all we know.

That being said I think Paper Mario/WoW will be the Gears match all over again. WoW still probably beats Gears, right?

I won't be around to argue for awhile, but why exactly are many people confident PM 60-40's AC? This may just be a case of me giving AC too much credit, but WoW didn't do bad at all last year and AC got good attention on the Gamecube with similar ports/sequels on future systems. We've also seen Tidus beat the King of All Cosmos worse than PM beat KD, so its blow-out last round wasn't that great either.

I wish people were only thinking 60/40 between PM and AC, some of these predictions have PM doubling AC before SFF which I think is crazy. Are we forgetting that PM was terrible last year and would have to had been SFF (not LFF) by Metroid Prime. LFF can only do so much.

The two games were probably hurting each other. How much did Prime actually get on Paper Mario anyways? That's probably PM's true strength.

You know, the same could be said of Galaxy and DPP last year too. Man those games do all too well when not against fellow Nintendo. Somehow I think Galaxy will approach 40% on Twilight Princess as well. How much do we expect Dragon Age to get on RSE/GTAIV? It could very well lose to both of them. And then Beyond Good and Evil is probably stronger than Shenmue.

Oh yeah char, the weakest game in R2 was probably Deus Ex is nothing else (nuts). Can't see Skies handing away the win there for whatever reason...then again 53% on an old PC game that's not relevant in today's world kinda sucks. Then again maybe BGII is slightly relevant for basically being BioWare's first/second hit game, before they went all mainstream with KOTOR and especially the Mass Effect series.

Also I would personally take Beyond Good and Evil > Shenmue > F-Zero GX, but yeah.
