FFXII falling off makes sense to me. The FFVII characters fell off by 4%+ between the 2008 and 2010 contests (i.e. Cloud went from 56% to 52% on Snake), and part of the drop was probably after the 2009 games contest. Cloud probably handled the falloff better than most characters, so it was probably even worse for the characters below him (though maybe not Tifa, going by how well she did against Seph).

We've seen a dropoff occur about 11-13 years after a game was released: with CT, it fell off sharply in 2006-7, and with FFVII, it fell sharply in 2008-10. I suspect the same thing happened this year even to OOT, which is why Link fell off a lot too (and why OOT's playership rate has actually fallen off more since 2005 than FFVII's). Of course, FFXII is a much newer game, but perhaps the vast majority of its fans are just FFVII fans, so it's not creating a new fanbase among kids, but rather just being carried by an older fanbase that is in decline.

As for why there would be a dropoff at 11-13 years after release, my theory is: People play the games that they end up really really loving when they are in elementary school, for the most part. At that age, you might get the game right around release, or you might get it a couple of years later. About 10 years later, the group that played and loved the game as kids graduates from high school......and we see the telltale sharp decline in ASV/day vote power accompanied by a drop in overall strength.

I think I'm the only guy taking SotC over MGS2. Which really scares me, considering I'm currently 14th on the Battle leaderboard. I keep on switching to MGS2, but then I keep on looking back at the stats and can't find a reason that SotC won't win.

Uh, the stats still say that MGS2 would win the match.

But those two matches should lie a little. MGS2 did that with no other anywhere near strong entrant in the poll. SotC still put up an almost similar number while having to content with Kingdom Hearts as well.

MGS2 only faced Kingdom Hearts with FFX in the poll as well. Those two clearly LFFed each other as MGS2 got 4% more on FFX in the second round than in the first.

But it still did well with two strong games in the poll, which was your argument in the first place for MGS2 doing better.

I don't see any reason to think FFXII has dropped yet. Portal is loved by everyone that's played it, and since last contest it's been free to anyone who wants to. I'd expect a significant boost there, and it's not like either game disappointed against Gears of War 2/Crisis Core.

I'm looking at stats because I don't know which one is stronger. MGS2 is easily the least popular MGS game. SotC might be a little niche, but it was pretty popular all-around. And the two strong games that SotC had to contend with had very little overlap (unless we want to call both RE4 and KHII Nintendo) while MGS2's popular competition had a huge amount of overlap.

if you're gonna go that route, though, I'd set KH and KH2 equal. MGS2 got 22% to KH's 28% while KH2 got 34% to SOTC's 18%. you can try to factor in FFX/KH overlap if you like (though personally, I don't think it's very significant; previous FF/KH matches haven't seemed to hamper it that much)

I think MGS2 isn't in any real trouble, but this strikes me as even more outlandish. Not saying MGS4 is a 100% lock, but it's fairly close. At least, a lot closer than MGS2 is.

As far as "This match worries me" goes until KH/KH2:

PM2/Oblivion >> UC2/Halo >> PM/WoW >= MGS2/SotC > MGS4/Diablo II
