Complaint about Portal's length never made any sense to me. It may only last a few hours, but those hours are so much better than the 60 hours of boredom that I associate with FFXII. I for one am glad to see Portal kicking FFXII's ass.

And before someone accuses me that "I just don't get FFXII", I made a lenghty post about my FFXII hatred during its last match, so I won't repeat myself here. Basically, it boils down to: terrible plot, terrible characters (especially Vaan, Penelo, Fran), forgettable music, bad gameplay, boring environments, ****ing stupid Spell queues, random chests and random drops, badly designed License Board, etc.

Its length was a positive, especially given its position in the Orange Box. You're already getting a full-length game with two extra episodes and an extensive multi-player game for dirt cheap...now here's a short finely-tuned puzzle game that's not like either of the other games. Check it out and see how you like it.

Portal is a minimalist game like Ico, Braid, and Limbo to my understanding.

Godspeed minimalism. At least it shows that it can beat a mainline FF on GameFAQs!

Also I heard some people saying that SotC will overperform because of "SmartVoterFAQs", but I highly doubt it, because MGS2 is oft-cited as the first postmodern game in regards to its plot, which inspired games like Eternal Darkness and BioShock. SotC can't possibly claim so much influence.

Has there been any instance so far of a non-big budget action adventure NOT impressing? I mean, SotC, Ico, Portal, Sands of Time, Silent Hill 2, and even Beyond Good and Evil have exceeded expectations.

I've also noticed that casual games are bombing across the bracket (and this relates to stuff like God of War and GTA too, not just super casual games), while hardcore ones are generally doing well except for those with the "Final Fantasy" tag (minus Dissidia I guess, but MW2 turned out to be a joke).

Analysis

Mass Effect really got lucky with bracket placement as it’s got two soft opponents to crush. While I feel that the game is stronger this year compare to the previous I do think some people are hyping it a bit too much, but we won’t see that until next round. Skies of Arcadia started with an amazing board vote, but ended up going even throughout the night which brought its percent to what we see today.

I think the best way to estimate Mass Effect’s strength would be to compare to what it is going to do against Skies of Arcadia to what Twilight Princess did to Shenmue. Shenmue was the bigger and more liked game on the Dreamcast, but Skies of Arcadia was more loved on the Gamecube than Shenmue was on the Xbox. If we look back to the last contest they were in Shenmue did perform better against a stronger opponent, but that was all the way back in 2004 and you could argue that the Dreamcast was more relevant back then than it is today. Personally I would take Shenmue over Skies of Arcadia, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the opposite happened.

Back to the match at hand some people were disappointed by Mass Effect’s performance last round and while a part of it can be blamed on people underestimating Plants vs. Zombies’ strength I think people are over inflating Mass Effect’s boost. This isn’t Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect is not a character. It’s harder to boost a game than it is a character since not everybody goes back and plays the first game while others can like Commander Shepard for what he did in the second game without ever playing the first.

Mass Effect should end at around the mid-60s and has a chance at a doubling. Skies of Arcadia is in my opinion the weakest game to reach the second round so even if Mass Effect is a weak game is should still be able to pull of the blowout. If the game decides to break 70% I would give it a chance next round, but until then I just don’t see the hype and based on a few of these predictions I think a lot of people agree with me.

I really liked Portal, although I felt the game was 90% tutorial and oh-so-clever nerds ruined all the humor by repeating it every ****ing day. Portal 2 looks longer and has co-op, but its gonna need to if it expects me to pay 60 bucks for it.

-Other Metal Gears disappoint, people hype SotC > MGS2, Ulti laughs
-Wind Waker destroys God of War 2, somehow this means Melee > Brawl 60-40%
-RacistFAQs still exist with Golden Sun beating San Andreas
-Dead Rising/Person 4 had epic fodder vs fodder match
-FF12 sucks. In fact, Final Fantasy on the whole looks a bit off. All aboard the RE4 > FFX train!
-My Guru is dead :/

Portal finally showing some signs of life for a day vote at the end here. It's really rocking the US vote, beat out Gears of War 2 by a good bit as well surprisingly. So maybe the day match against RE4 won't be horrible for it, but I think it would still prefer to have a smaller pool of votes.

As much as I loved Skies of Arcadia --- minus the INSANE number of random battles, everything else about that game was perfection --- I'm sorry it has to go up against the titan that is Mass Effect.
