Analysis

When I took Portal back when I was making my bracket I took it as an upset since I was taking a game over a Final Fantasy game that actually performed better in the previous contest and yet Portal is the huge guru favourite. Things looked great for Portal on its first round match, but as the round continued it became apparent that the performance was not as impressive as we once thought.

The main reason I took Portal is that I expected the game to be stronger this contest mostly due to the game being free on Steam a while back which gave it over two million downloads. Sure some may have been from existing fans, but it undoubtedly brought new fans to the series and considering its performance last year wasn’t that far behind Final Fantasy XII it would have a chance for an upset.

Portal breaking 70% on a vote-in winner was impressive until we saw everyone that was in that vote-in with the exception of Soul Calibur II losing by more than expected while its stronger prequel getting crushed by a Paper Mario game didn’t help matters either. I think people may have been hard on the other games; both Viewtiful Joe and Castlevania: DoS were up against two of the strongest games in the bracket, Wii Sports was always going to suffer from SFF at the hands of Majora’s Mask and I think people are underestimating the power of Shadow of the Colossus. Remember that game got something like 35% on Resident Evil 4 and while Final Fantasy XII is expected to perform better Portal did defeat a game that defeated The Sims by more than what Shadow of the Colossus did.

I still believe that Portal has a great chance to upset; despite this technically is the consensus pick. Portal has reason to cover the gap between it from last year and Final Fantasy XII and should the match end close rallies would no doubt be on Portal’s side. I could say that Final Fantasy XII was rather unimpressive against Crisis Core last year, but personally I wouldn’t be surprised if that game really was that strong on GameFAQs.

Biggest discrepancy would be Oregon Trail, I believe. It was in the high 20s in North America; I don't think it broke 3% on any other continent.
