If you had to ask me what games I think would be in the Noble Nine, here's what I would propose:

In 2004 the "Super Six" was SMB3, CT, LttP, FFVI, FFVII and OoT

I guess we should drop FFVI, but there's a lot that we could add: SMW, SM64, RBY, MGS, FFX, SSBM and SSBB.

Mario 64 got within inches of LTTP and could possibly be the strongest Mario game. there is no noble nine here.

you've got tiers here:

top: OOT, FF7
near-top: LTTP, SM64, CT, RBY, Brawl, Melee, FFX, TP, Mario 3, Mario World
high: RE4, GSC, MGS, FF8, MGS3, KH, KH2, Wind Waker, MGS4, maybe FF6
mid-high: Mario 1, Zelda 1, Goldeneye, Mario RPG, FF9, Majora's Mask, Fallout 3
mid: Oblivion, Mario Kart 64, Diablo 2, Super Metroid, Bioshock, Portal, Metroid Prime, Half-Life 2, SSB, Super Mario Kart, Link's Awakening, DPP

something like that. I'm probably missing some games but the order should be about right.

it's more that games were split up by generation and so nobody really had any idea what was going on. red sox and I have waged some opinion wars over the years about old vs. new thanks to that stupid setup.

I thought everyone always agreed that older games looked weaker than they should due to greater SFF than with newer games? Since most older gamers played the same big games, while newer games had much less playrate overlap.

From: -LusterSoldier- | #708
Why not try to make up a Noble Nine for games?

The concept wouldn't make sense. With characters there were always 9 or 10 guys that were ahead of everybody. With games it's a big pile of mush.

MGS lost to RBY cleanly despite OOT there. MGS4 -- which I thought then and now was equal if not stronger to MGS in 2008 -- lost to FFX. I'd pick FFX every time, personally.

I hadn't heard this idea. if anything it would make the older games look better than normal since all the big guns are going to crush the little games.

old games have always been overvalued in my opinion, so much so that everyone was pretty confident in a clean FF7 victory (and not because of LTTP/FFX overlap, either). OOT came along and showed that new games were pretty strong in and of themselves. (OOT was in the 'new' half of the bracket)

that's the thing - the NES goes about five games deep max. SNES/Genesis gets to 15. by the time we hit PS2, we're at 30 or 40, and now we've got 50 games this gen that are worth something. new games don't hit the godly levels that old games did, but that's because we're a lot more balanced now. one company doesn't dominate the landscape anymore.

If we format the contest like this current one is, there will be a total of 128 games that makes the list. Some generations could get a little more rep than others. I would be fine with that.

Then OoT or FF7 wins again. That's boring. And that's also why this contest was set up to eliminate those two games from the running.

I was thinking we could do a contest similar to GOTD, but for characters. "Character of the Decade" contest, or something like that. Basically, you only include characters who were created in 2000-2009. Doing that pretty much eliminates the entire Noble Nine from the characters bracket. allowing for a contest where the winner is actually up in the air.

lol 4-ways says otherwise. Also there's no reason to think MGS4 > MGS, even back then. Even if you think they're equal we're talking about a 52/48 match, FFX isn't that safe.

I might gamble on Sora if Square would actually unveil some god damned KHIII. Might also gamble on Dante or Mudkip or Bidoof or some crap. The strength ceiling would be so much lower than a standard CB, and something about a side character being crowned "Character of the Decade" seems a little off.

Wait a second, are we forgetting Dante with his MVC3 boost, it is not like Auron would break 55% on him based on this year stats. Auron could only score 44% on Zero and i would take Ryu/Dante > Zero.

Auron would be the clear favorite, but i think Dante has a slim chance as well.

The idea was brought up by someone before FFVII/OOT, I remember. It was always true (basically, the upper half of the bracket was filled with Nintendo LFF), but in the context of our old/new debate I remember it felt almost like preemptive damage control. I think the real message there was that OOT could beat FFVII, much more than anything about the new/old games, but I at least was too fixated on the idea of FFVII saving us from perpetual Nintendo domination to put too much thought there.

To be honest, that Character of the Decade contest sounds all right. It's something different, and it could provide for some very interesting matches. The only thing is we'd probably have 64 characters instead of 128.

I'm still rooting for a Greatest Fictional Character Ever contest, though.

Yeah, at this point, I'd rather see some outside-the-box ideas. The 4 way-polls was an interesting one but it was hell to predict.
2 matches per day is also a nice addition. And taking out the oldest games by making it a decade contest was brilliant. On the game's side, there's some nice possibilities in the future. Hell, he could make it into an annual GOTY contest after that.

On the character side, it's grown pretty damn old however. There's gotta be better ideas than another character contest.

We could do Classic Games from the NES, Genesis, and SNES areas too for the next game contest to figure out the best classic game.

Granted, only like LTTP, Chrono Trigger, and the two Mario games would be of any real strength, but it's plausible.

(Game Boy could also be thrown in I guess so that it's likely going to be RBY vs. Link to the Past.)

every contest idea has been worn thin. every contest idea is basically doing its best to protect the site from itself and its bias towards RPGs, Nintendo games, classic/iconic characters, etc etc. as far as I'm concerned, this is the last contest we need for a long time. I'd like it if Game of the Year was expanded to a 32 game bracket with nominations and a prediction period, actually, but that'd be too soon to happen this year.
