Are we gonna get to Part 1000 by the end? When did we start? |
AxemPink | Posted 11/20/2010 1:28:00 AM | message detail |
From
this year, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow got 23.1% on Kingdom Hearts, an
actual tripling rather than the near tripling Paper Mario got last
year. In its vote-in poll, C:DoS got 40% against Gears of War 2, which
is almost certainly weaker than Gears of War, which is currently
struggling to 40% on Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, which is more
likely than not weaker than Paper Mario...Uh. Yeah, something was fishy
that match. Maybe Paper Mario got SFFed in 2009 not only by Metroid Prime but also to some degree by Kingdom Hearts? SMRPG was made by Square, and for some time before release Nintendo were calling Paper Mario "Super Mario RPG 2." For that matter, Metroid Prime got 45% on Wind Waker in 2004, which sounds pretty good considering Metroid/Samus's reputation for collapsing in the face of higher-profile Nintendo. Perhaps Metroid Prime is immune to Metroid's general SFF woes? Meaning the familiar pattern people thought they saw last year was actually Paper Mario being pretty decent? Maybe we should try to get Metroid Prime into the next character battle contest and see how it does? It worked well enough for Diablo, and maybe some people will think they're actually voting for Samus? >__> Oh, and would anyone take Paper Mario > Super Mario Galaxy? >_> |

You might see one in R3, but no way are you seeing both. Sorry. Speaking of which, I still don't buy PM being any kind of favorite over WoW now. Tidus beat King of all Cosmos worse than PM beat KD, and Marth nearly doubled Prince of all Cosmos despite Donkey Kong in the poll. I also remain unconvinced PM is that much bigger than Animal Crossing; I think it could beat Gears about like PM:TYD currently is and wouldn't do much worse against KD than PM. WoW's still looking okay in my book. --- Nominate EPONA...or the terrorists win. http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg |

It's
not like PM was a huge game, and MP got like 62% on it. No polls before
this contest ever suggested PM was worth much here, either. I'd take PM
> AC, but it's likely not some 59-41 affair indirectly until proven
otherwise...and both KD and Gears are pretty horrible examples to use
for saying PM's got strength, percentages be damned. --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg So what if she's a horse? She's got your back anyway. |

Match LXIV: (2) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion vs. (15) Soul Calibur II Information Name: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Year: 2006 Previous Performance: SpC2k9 – 4th in round 3 Name: Soul Calibur II Year: 2003 Previous Performance: N/A Analysis Final match of the round marks the half-way point of this contest. We’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff already and I think we can all agree that SBAllen has mostly done a great job in putting the bracket together. As for this match I originally thought Soul Calibur II was going to have a respectful performance, but as time went on it became more apparent that Oblivion is going cruise to the next round. Everyone in that vote-in except oddly enough Viewtiful Joe looked terrible this contest and as much as I don’t want it to happen it seems that it will likely be the same here. It’s obvious that Soul Calibur II is the strongest game of the series, but given what the original did last contest that isn’t saying much. Too bad the game didn’t use the Gamecube box art it would have been interesting to see if Link would have done something. Oblivion was a decent surprise from last contest, but given that Final Fantasy VIII got 74% on the original I don’t think Oblivion will be breaking 70% on Soul Calibur II like a few people are suggesting. Still given the vote-in Oblivion is likely to pull off the doubling here. charmander6000’s Bracket: Oblivion > Soul Calibur II charmander6000’s Prediction: Oblivion wins, 67.32% - 32.68% --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls GotD Bracket: 54/62 Today's Matches: PM: TTYD & Oblivion |

The
results don't jive at all with what we saw last year. I think these two
PM performances, coupled with Prime's own very good showing against a
jRPG (we've seen what those have been doing) in a night match spell
really good news for Prime. I've always thought New Nintendo SFF was really really bad. My guess is that Prime beats Vice City with some (but not too much) room to spare, and PM gets fairly close to VC. Incidentally, I've been thinking about the counterpart to this discussion- Old Nintendo LFF, particularly SMW/SMB3 LFF, and I think it could have been substantially higher in the semifinals than in the earlier rounds. The reason is, in the semifinals, by putting FFVII and LTTP in there, most of the people who would vote for one of the Mario games were from the core Mario fanbase that really loves the games. The universal side of the fanbase was mostly ripped away from them in the face of overwhelming strength, and the core, much smaller, fanbase, is capable of producing the LFF the universal side is not. Though I expect people here already thought that, as I haven't seen people saying LTTP beats SMW with 57% or so, which is what the minimal LFF in previous rounds suggest! --- Nominate Crono so he can get a higher seed and avoid being fed to Clinkeroth early in the contest. |
