Under 72 now? I'll wait for the ASV, but this is a slight underperformance relative to my expectations. It might not mean much for later matches, but this is the least impressive first round Pokemon has had in several years.

Zelda: MM vs. Wii Sports was a match involving similar fanbases, though. (maybe not like Zelda vs. Mario, but...) Also, Wii Sports is probably weaker than VJ, anyway, despite that one poll's results.

Speaking of picture advantages (since GSC apparently will do better in future rounds; I agree it will help somewhat), let's discuss Kingdom Hearts vs. Kingdom Hearts II. All I can say is... how will KH2 -not- have a huge pic advantage? Think about it. And, since I believe many voters will not have a strong preference between KH1 and 2, I think the picture could make a big difference there.

We've all played Wii Sports. It has the most general audience possible for a game. I don't really think it's a traditional Nintendo entry purely because it appeals to people who aren't part of Nintendo's regular audience.

Also this is supposed to be an SFF match right now but look what's happening!

Wii Sports will never be THAT weak because it's the game everyone has played. It'd have a good chance against a lot of games here for that reason. I mean it's weak. But its sheer playrate stops it from being THAT weak.

The top performers actually do worse than the lower tiers. I didn't really expect that. We lose more than half of the remaining -3, -5, -6, -7 and -8 brackets. The -4s manage to just barely stay above 50. As you go down, the prediction percentage actually rises into the 70s before fading away. The Gurus heavily favored Mario Kart Wii winning with 83.14% support. The match was reasonably close so that could have been a disaster.

17 people fell off the Top 50. grayfox9996, Gandoclaus, clayallen17, EdmundExley, Hyper_Sonic_987, SpeLLz4, DocJustice, theawesomestevr, thesupermuffin, fount_of_evil, Snuffy_Mccrack, Patz18, Tien25, Winney1907, Lazzy128, 7point9 and greentoadie05 did not have Mario Kart Wii beating Phoenix Wright.

10 people got the match wrong but survived. warriorsallofit, MayorQuimby2121, Gambone, Dr_Naysay, mmx724, Teh_Ronin, carolinafan92, DagothUrReturns, crono1009 and hellpunch11 also did not have Mario Kart Wii beating Phoenix Wright.

I feel a lot better about FFX making it to the finals. My biggest fear was Pokemon turning out to be a monster.

And it could still be a monster. If G/S/C makes it to the semi-finals against FFX, it could be even stronger than it is now.

Pokemon's clearly lost a step since the last Character Battle, but all in all, this performance is all right.

I've noticed a trend, though:

-Mother 3 did way better than expected against Devil May Cry 3.
-Metroid Fusion stood up to Platinum.
-Pokemon R/S/E toppled GTA4.
-Golden Sun thrashed Ratchet, and should probably be the favorite versus San Andreas.
-Fire Emblem did better against Tony Hawk than many expected.
-And finally, Advance Wars is doing surprisingly well today.

Every single GBA game has surpassed expectations; occasionally by a large margin. Forget Pokefear, Brawlfear, etc. - it's time to brace ourselves for GBAFEAR!

SSBB / TP Link is also a great contestant. It's the way I think Link should have been in the first place.

LttP Link is probably the worst, he looks the youngest (around 5 years old), his characterization depth is non-existent (therefore non-believable) he has green pajamas 3/4 of the game, and... well... he has pink hair.

OoT Adult Link seems like a 14-year-old bad-ass young man, and he looks great and handsome as well, but it has a very high-pitched voice IMO for him to be an 'adult'.

Heh, loving this result. I'd consider Advance Wars/Wii Sports to be relatively close, and Pokemon has a lot more reason to SFF Advance Wars than Majora does to SFF Wii Sports.

As for when the next Character Battle will happen, I doubt it will be in Winter 2011 because that requires nominations to be opened up before this contest even ends. Spring 2011 seems very unlikely. Summer 2011 is possible, but I would not want a summer contest because it would take away the ASV. So Fall 2011 seems to be the best possible time for the next contest.

This is mildly underwhelming, but RE5 and likely GoW2 should justify Metroid Fusion doing so well on DPP and RSE beating GTA4 was impressive to me. None of Nintendo's other major titles have disappointed here, either, so this isn't too pressing of a matter right now. LoZ:MM/CC and LoZ:WW's first two matches will tell us a whole lot more than anything we've seen for them yet...plus comparing GSC/MKW to SSBB/MKDS will tell us more than today is. AW's bound to be pretty weak, but it's still new.

Good point -- I didn't realize they were all GBA-games. It's also interesting that DS-games haven't done so well either, so...maybe with the rise of Pokemon here came along the rise of handheld-games they played while Pokemon was in its biggest boom. I don't think it lines up precisely year-wise, but there's probably something there.

I'd definitely take Advance Wars over Wii Sports, personally. If you ask me, it'd be an Ulti-style blowout, at the very least - most Wii games haven't been doing well, while every GBA game has looked positively golden. Plus, Advance Wars actually has a decent-sized fanbase; as far as Nintendo series go, it should at least be a notch above Animal Crossing and its ilk.

Wii Sports would beat a few other games, but it's definitely weak-sauce. Its play-rate's too high; it, Tetris, Sims, Pac-Man...they can all beat a few games (and yes, I know they're not all the same strength). It's also not like it's the WoW of motion-gaming, and people don't really take their anger on a system out on its games often. Halo is an exception, but it's still decent here and was hated for more reasons than just the Xbox.

lol at anyone trying to downplay this match. The spread betting was 75% and GSC already has 73%, on a game that we have no information on.

I'm surprised about the support for MM, people in this topic have such a hard on for that game for whatever reason. It's like arguing Ganondorf > Sonic after watching Sonic win last contest.

If anything it's probably a good barometer of GSC, actually, now that I think about it. From all we've seen, Pikachu should be (roughly) equal to GSC powerwise, shouldn't he? If so we can use him as a base to work from and guess how GSC's done...which is alright in this case.

You really shouldn't compare characters to games!

Of course MGS2 got 70% on Banjo-Tooie so if Banjo-Tooie=Banjo and GSC=Pikachu, GSC is only slightly stronger than MGS2.

However that's a really bad comparison anyway. In addition to the first sentence above, Pikachu may well have SFF'd Banjo.
