Analysis

The board has been hyping Pokemon ever since this contest has been announced and with the recent release of HeartGold/SoulSilver and even Black/White in Japan it will be interesting to see what the game performs. Sadly its first opponent is against something that we have no information on other than it is going to get killed in this match.

The only information on Advance Wars is the various GotY polls for each game of the series and just by looking at them you can tell that the series doesn’t hold much weight on GameFAQs. I’m actually surprised the game made it in all together. There’s been some debate on whether or not Pokemon can get some SFF here and I think it is possible even though we haven’t seen it this is more due to the lack of handheld match-ups. Then again we wouldn’t be able to tell since a lot of people are predicting a huge blowout regardless of SFF.

Outside of the big three Pokemon GSC probably has the best chance at winning this contest and I feel that some people are trying to downplay its chances. Before getting everything mentioned above Pokemon GSC was already pretty close to the big three so it won’t exactly take much for it to be pushed over the edge. Breaking 70% should be easy for it and it has a great chance at tripling it.

On a completely unrelated note, Japanese developed games are now 15-11 against their Western breth(r?)en. Here are the remaining Japan vs. West matches:

So the Western games will have to win all those matches to catch up! Eek! Come on make a Zelda game lose in the first round...

It wouldn't really make sense considering everything that's been happening this year (such as HG/SS, not to mention how well Pikachu, Charizard, and Missingno did last contest), though. At least MGS going down makes sense; 2 and 3 took some time to pick up steam while 4 died down rather quickly at a lot of sites. I would reckon it follows suit at GameFAQs soon enough and quite possibly already has.

It's quite possible that Snake is kept afloat by his SSBB appearance. All hail.

I'd like you guys to rank the following from highest to lowest as far as how CONFIDENT you are in who will win the match (NOT what's on your bracket), and, of course, say which.

1._Uncharted 2 beats Street Fighter Iv's ass.
2._Batman also wins very easily as well.
3._GTA: San Andreas has to win this no matter what. I understand GS DS's hype but please...

4._Portal may win against FFXII but I seriously don't know what to expect here... I have no real knowledge on this other than Portal being the strong favorite for some reason...?
5._I thought Okami could win over Mega Man very easily, but after watching MM9's upset against Demon's Souls I don't know what to expect now. I don't think Okami is stronger than Demon's Souls, but if it doesn't win then I'll be pissed.

6._World of Warcraft, no matter what everyone else says, CAN beat Paper Mario, though PM is strong as hell. Upset chances are high though...
7._Halo 3 also wins IMO. Sure, it'll be very close, but I think Halo 3 has a good chance at this.
8._I was also sure Persona 4 would beat either DR or TWEWY, but since someone made me realize DR was going to be the top option..... =( *sigh*

9._God of War wins for 1 decimal. Seriously. This is a coinflip match. This is the toughest match ever to predict on Round 2.

It seems like all the debateable R2 matches have favorites now.

- Golden Sun is the favorite in that match against GTA,, easily. It blew R&C out of the water and has a hyped game releasing on the day of the match.
- Portal is the favorite against FFXII. 70+% against Gears of War 2 is better than 55+% against Crisis Core, a game it really should have SFFed in the first place anyway.
- Paper Mario should win against WoW. Seriously, WoW couldn't even break 60% on Animal Crossing, even with 92% bracket support. Why do people feel good about WoW at all?
- Dead Rising should win out of virtue of the match being a day match.

Looks Like Round 1 Created an Unstable Favorite: God of War, Golden Sun, Portal, Paper Mario

Total Coinflip: Persona 4 (come on, hugely liked by this board, the site's favorite genre, AND killer professional reception!)

Seriously, Persona 4 was widely received better than Dead Rising. It'll be incredibly ironic if it can't beat Dead Rising on JRPGFAQS.

No they don't. It was blatantly on the rise for the past number of years given the joke it was around the 2003/2004 mark. Rose to something quite strong and powerful, even last summer it was a dangerous force and was probably peaking. It's looked suspect in both contest appearances so far, there's strong grounds to support its days at the top being numbered.

kinsho, people are getting a bit sidetracked by WoW's percentages. Much like Halo was in the past it gets so many anti-votes that its simply always going to flatter whatever it winds up beating, I'd wager its one of the least transitive games because of that. As a classic example of a Love/Hate game WoW managed to take a comfortable majority against a game from the sites most popular company, that's what I'll be taking from that match. I'd favour PM myself but there's definite question marks over this one.

Disagree about Pokemon being on a decline. I mean, it might be possible, but you can't gauge it based on RSE and DP. Neither of those games and nothing from them has ever looked that impressive to begin with (unless you count Mudkip, but that's not really due to RSE).

If G/S flops, then yeah. But until then I see no reason to claim a decline.

A bit premature at this stage but I suspect it'll be agreed upon by the end of the contest. Always thought the poke-boost over the last few years was an unstable one that wasn't going to last, seemed to all be a counter-reaction to the hate it was getting during its mainstream popularity days. I'm not sure how comfortable Gamefaqs is with Pokemon in the Zelda/Final Fantasy/Mario league after seeing it rise to that status.

Fair points but 30% of the site having played any individual game is not exactly terrible numbers or anything, certainly looking from the win pick percentages and people on the leaderboard who have it winning WoW is regarded as a very significant game in this contest and for neutrals with no allegiance could be a swinging point. I still think it'll lose but its too big and important a game to sink without a trace against Paper Mario, surely. I think it'd be a major discredit to the contest name if WoW got embarrassed in this one.

Anyone calling the WoW/PM match in any direction as a "lock" right now is just being foolish. Thats one of those matches we really can't trust first round %. WoW is never gonna be the kind of game to get blowouts, and theres no reason to think Katamari Damacy is anything but bad fodder.
