Analysis

I know a lot of people have been debating this match, but I’m not seeing the hype. GameFAQs doesn’t care about Dragon Quest while Chrono Cross is a game waiting to shine. Sure if you ignore the fact that any recent poll with Chrono Cross has had SFF in it maybe this would be debatable.

Though I must give credit, Dragon Quest VIII did have a decent performance in the GotY poll, but it was easily beaten by God of War at a time before the price cut that boost Kratos to a decent mid-card and when the same game went ahead and was completely crushed by Resident Evil 4 later on. The game has also had time to settle since then and really the series has been crushed at every turn, with or without Final Fantasy in the poll. Even six months later Dragon Quest went on to get tripled by Super Smash Bros.

While both Serge and Chrono Cross have made appearances in the contests both of them were in SFF situations. Final Fantasy IX was probably the worst opponent for Chrono Cross with the exception of Chrono Trigger itself. Considering that the game still got 16% on Ocarina of Time and broke 10% in a round where breaking 10% for fourth place finishers was quite rare is impressive enough.

Sure it’s possible for Dragon Quest VIII to win, but I didn’t think twice about this match and I feel strongly that Chrono Cross has decent strength so for it to have a chance Dragon Quest VIII needs to have decent strength as well. It’s possible that we may see SFF in this match, but I think it’ll be unlikely.

Anyone think God of War II may perform decently on Wind Waker? It easily defeated Resident Evil 5 and Metroid Fusion and those games did alright.

The problem I see with a Character of the Decade contest is that could be hard for SBAllen to keep track of all the characters that were introduced during the decade in series with a long history.

Though I do like how it could finally give 2nd Gen Pokemon a damn rep.

The prediction percentage for the match is pretty high but still lower than I thought it would be. It was the lowest out of all of the 1-16 matches. The top performers actually do quite well. Everyone in the top 124 got it right. The -14s and better do manage to stay above 90 as well.

No one fell off the Top 50 this time.

I loved Chrono Cross, I thought it was a great game. Karsh was very cool. The main negative was that it pretty much had nothing to do with Chrono Trigger - I was very disappointed in that. Also there were too many characters. But I really liked the combat system, and I liked the story as well.

Same, I think. MGS4 is still the favorite, but I think there's less confidence in the MGS rep beating the Nintendo rep (in a day match, no less) for that last semifinal slot.

People missed the beloved Chrono characters, and for the most part the Chrono Cross characters were weak substitutes. They also missed the Chrono Trigger combat system I think.

Really? Hardly any jrpg sequels retain same characters. I wouldn't have hoped for that. I went into it with lower expectations even though CT was my favorite game of all time, and came out with hearing the best OST ever, having a really cool selection of different characters, the best graphics ever on the PS1, a really enjoyable and thought provoking story, and an enjoyable battle system. Its in my top 10 jrpgs for sure. Just because its not Chrono Trigger doesn't mean I can't enjoy this game as well.

I thought CC was going to have a bigger anti-vote factor than even GTAIV. Something like Modern Warfare 2 > Chrono Cross > Grand Theft Auto IV > Final Fantasy XII (counting the fact that these are games with the bigger anti-votes factor in the contest).

To be fair, I played Chrono Cross years before I ever touched Chrono Trigger for the first time, and I never really cared for it. Besides having too many characters to choose from, the battle system wasn't very fun to me, and I always felt like the story was very... scattered.

That said, I voted for CC, because I at least played it all the way through. DQ8 was a mess of archaic RPG design and horrible masses of grind that I couldn't play for more than a few hours before I turned it off and never touched it again.

If GSC underperforms in R1 it would be a superficial one. While MGS4 had trouble against AC1.

Rounds 1 and 2 are pretty meaningless imo. I think the Majora/GSC R3 match decides who hits the semis. I doubt Wind Waker will have much luck stopping either; likewise with MGS in a day match.
