SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Maybe I'm off my rocker, but honestly, I think BioShock has a chance against Kingdom Hearts II. I was really impressed by its performance against Battlefront II, and since KHII won't have its killer ASV to work with, I legitimately think there's a chance of an upset.

Paper Mario/WoW should be interesting as well.

Maybe I'm off my rocker, but honestly, I think BioShock has a chance against Kingdom Hearts II. I was really impressed by its performance against Battlefront II, and since KHII won't have its killer ASV to work with, I legitimately think there's a chance of an upset.

Paper Mario/WoW should be interesting as well.

For KH2, not having its ASV is going to bring down its percentage a bit, but I don't see it having any issue with shutting out Bioshock. Battlefront just doesn't seem all that strong, to me.

On any other site, PM/WoW might be an interesting match, but I think here, Mario is going to be the perfect game to feed off WoW's anti-votes.

Just how hyped were those games here? I never hear anything about GTA1 or GTA2 so were people really that excited about GTA3? 2001 was still several years before GameFAQs would start to accept the Xbox. SSB sold really well but it wasn't until after SSBM came out that the series became what it is now. This is GameFAQs so I'm sure FFX was huge, though.

GTA3 was insanely hyped, at least in general (not sure about a site like this). It was kinda like Fallout 3.. nobody cared about the first 2 Fallout games, but all of the trailers and e3 coverage and all got people super excited about it.

Spore.. now there's a game of misleading hype. never understood that train.

looks like Banjo died after the power hour. not a huge surprise, though the huge gains here are kinda startling. MGS2 will end up being just fine.

I think the hype behind Spore was more the "make anything, do anything" idea behind it. Of course, it ended up having a Fable-esque level of FAIL in the lack of delivery.

Hadn't Halo been MASSIVELY hyped for the computer, but then was co-opted to the XBox? It was definitely one of the more promoted games, seeing as that is ALL that Microsoft had to sell there console.

As to Melee, I was a huge fan by that point already and they were marketing it pretty heavily as the quasi-launch title for the Gamecube, but it didn't have the kind of establishment as a series yet...

It's amazing how much more hype there is now even for crappy games.

And yeah, Halo was one of the more hyped game I can remember. It was hyped like crazy with Microsofts marketing budget and it was all over e3s and everything as the shooter that would make consoles the place to play FPS. Bungie already had a pretty good track record at that point since Marathon was one of the most respected FPS on the 90s. Halo single handidly made the original Xboxs launch what it was, and without Halo, we might not have an Xbox 360 now.

I think we can pretty much say unequivocably that without Halo, there would be no Xbox.

That was THE Xbox game. I can't think of any game that has so thoroughly dominated a console.

If anybody has attach rate figures on hand, I'd love to see them, though it'd be best to see them for the first 3 years before Halo 2 came out...

oh Halo was huge for the xbox, for sure. nothing else comes close for one console.

but as far as pre-release hype? I dunno, I didn't pay tons of attention back then, but I never got the sense that many people were taking Microsoft seriously.

Maybe it wasn't fan made hype as much as Microsoft made hype, but I remember every football weekend like in the month heading into when the Xbox launched was full of Halo commercials. You couldn't go a game without seeing 3-4 Halo commercials.

Analysis

Initially there were a few people that debated this match, but now I think everyone has shifted towards one side. While Shadow of the Colossus impressed last contest compare to what we’re use to with Wander the game isn’t some powerhouse. On the other hand The Sims is one of the most casual games in the contest plus it is on the PC. When you look it that way it’s kind of surprising that the match was debated at all.

Unlike Rock Band 2 The Sims is not hated, but at the same time I find it hard to believe that a large amount of people on GameFAQs would rate the game as one of their favourites. It also doesn’t help that games from the vote-in have been getting crushed. Both Gears of War 2 and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow have lost hard and they both got a sizable percent in that match. Granted Shadow of the Colossus is not as strong as Portal or Kingdom Hearts and The Sims will probably get more apathy votes in this match just for the reason that it doesn’t have eleven opponents.

I expect Shadow of the Colossus to be around the low 60s in this match. The Sims will not be much of a threat, but at the same time I don’t see it being crushed since Shadow of the Colossus isn’t that strong of a game. I also see the possibility of The Sims racking a lot of apathy votes in this match which could give it a good percentage as well.

I dont think SFF have the same effect on games of the same series compared to the characters. I dont think Halo vs Halo 3, Melee vs Brawl, or KH vs KHII would end up with one game dominating the other. I can see the games getting to the low 60's, but not to the high 60's to low 70's

So out of the remains of round 1, (e.g. the northwest division,) what are we still looking at as a bracketbuster? Is there any consensus yet on what we expect out of CC/DQ8? What about TTYD/Gears? I think I feel fairly comfortable with the over-seed on the other matches (except PW/MKW, where I anticipate Phoenix will lose,) but those two seem worthy of discussion.

CC/DQ8 - My bracket has DQ8, but it would appear I'm in the minority there, at least on the guru listings. I never played either, but I've played their predecessors. I fully respect CT and the DQ series, so I don't have much in the way of personal instincts to lead me here.

TTYD/Gears - Paper Mario wins np. Gears of War 2 loses np. TTYD vs Gears 1 is a little more circumspect IMHO. I fully expect GoW1 to outperform GoW2, so using the slaughter that was Portal/GoW2 doesn't seem fair to me. (Plus, Portal kills.) Does the Nintendo game win because it's Nintendo and/or dat top option? Does it win of its own accord?

Well, this match was always going to be a blowout. SotC is doing slightly better than I expected though. Good performance.
