You know what's funny? Lightning might be weaker now that her game has actually come out. Now that FF13 has had time to simmer, do we honestly think she gets 36% on Sonic?

What, now that the game wasn't the 2nd coming of FFX and she blows all her character development in the first half of the game?

Yeah, she's gonna be a legit high mid card, I think. Even though the game wasn't great, Lightning is a good character and takes the best of Cloud and Squall and makes them into one character.

Because back then, GameFAQs was voting for a concept. Lightning was given a lot of notice from Day 1 - badass female Cloud ect. The Lightning in the actual game did not live up to those standards.

I doubt Lightning could get that much strength solely from hype. It'd be different if she had previous games, but she didn't- and a character has a clear advantage over a concept. And in the case where she did have previous games, she still wouldn't wind up weaker after the new game came out than before the hype buildup- weaker than at the height of hype, yes, but the overall effect of the new game would still be positive or neutral.

I think this is a case of "I don't hear about it, so it doesn't exist."

I promise you, Bayonetta is alive and kicking, no more or less than Dante and Kratos are. The problem is, the game has a lot of dissenters, because a lot of gamers are "offended" by the main character, and a lot of gamers are threatened that it has better gameplay than GoW.

Due to the nature of its reception, it's just not going to do well in any contest it gets into (or she gets into), but I assure you that Bayonetta is indeed still on peoples' minds.

It was an easy match and the result was high prediction percentages. The -2s go perfect although we do lose a single -3. You have to go down to the -15s before prediction percentage falls below 90.

This might very well be true. We've seen numerous occasions now where hyped ended up possibly having greater influence before release - Twilight Princess hype (both for the game and Link's own strength), Brawl hype etc. This site seems easily swayed by hype. Lightning could well be weaker now than before. The game itself might also do worse in a poll setting now, than it would have just before it came out.

I picked MvC2 in my bracket but I think Mario is going to advance.

Also earlier some people were saying that they think Paper Mario > World of Warcraft just because "it would be weird if a Mario game lost to WoW on GameFAQs". Uh, did Halo 3/SMS teach you anything? WoW should be FAR less of an anti-vote magnet than Halo/GTA/CoD.

I fully expect this to happen. It kinda reminds me of last contest where Dante owned that Kingdom Hearts guy and Ryu didn't do so hot on Balthier. "ZOMG DANTE GOT THIS" No, it turns out Dante beat up some guy whose series took a tumble that year(where Riku can lose to Captain Falcon) and he lost in a close one.

Portal/FF12 should be close, but I'm not ready to write it off yet.

Paper Mario is a lot stronger than SMS, but you're right, World of Warcraft won't be nearly as anti-voted as GTAIV, Gears of War, Chrono Cross, etc... At first I was pretty confident on picking WoW > Paper Mario, but now I'm thinking the chances of an upset are pretty high, as Paper Mario is considerably strong.

Analysis

One of the oldest games in the contest meets one of the newest games. I feel that a lot of people aren’t giving this match much thought. While I believe Mario should take this you could make an argument for Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

The main thing is that Marvel vs. Capcom is not some unknown series, it did pretty decent in the best 2D Fighter poll where it kept up with Mortal Kombat and people are getting pretty hyped for the release of the third game coming out next year. People do need to get over that the game was released on the Dreamcast first as it was probably the most successful rerelease between Dreamcast games.

If Super Mario Galaxy is any indication New Super Mario Bros. Wii probably doesn’t have much strength. For whatever reason it seems that the Mario series took the hardest hit when people started to turn on the Wii. The apathy toward Mario Wii titles shown in previous polls is quite surprising, especially considering that other Mario games were largely unaffected. I expect a better performance than what the game did in the GotY since while people may have loved it the game didn’t really give much of a GotY vibe.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 does have a decent chance for an upset, but I feel Mario fans aren’t going to let this game down. It isn’t like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is going to be a superpower in this contest just that it probably won’t fold as easily as some people think.

Galaxy does have strength, people for some reason expect it to have amazing strength. But it is strong. NSMBWii is weak though. If Marvel was more popular i could see an upset.
