Portal lost the night vote to Gears earlier, so it probably seems like a day game to me. Portal losing the night vote to Gears was weird because most Xbox exclusive games bomb with the night vote.

I think it was more of the fact it had such an insane early vote, that it was obviously gonna bleed all day. It seemed like Portal bled even more once the sun came up though

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I fully expect SotC/Sims to be another DX/RB2. I just don't see the sims having any power on this website after the horrible numbers put up by casual games this contest.

This can't possibly be another DX/RB2 because Rock Band 2 was the favorite by the vast majority of people, while SotC is the case here. Shadow of the Colossus will probably smash The Sims, but then again it could surprise everyone and end up like TF2/Fable did.

...Actually, on second thought, forget the TF2/Fable upset. This will be a massacre.

I'd sooner bet on SotC beating MGS2 than it losing to The Sims... and I wouldn't want to bet on it beating MGS2.

I ave a special place in my heart for CC. It came out at a time where I needed a mindless, portable, mission based game. It just turns out that the story (imo) was really well done in some parts, and the ending was a great sense of closure, and threw me right back into another play through of FFVII. Zack and Cissnei remain my favorite characters of the story, and I enjoyed CC much more than XII. Bracket, however = XII, but I voted CC :)

Yeah... I would probably LOL at a MGS2/Sims match.

CC was a great story with great characters and was very well told. As a game it was woeful and is rightfully losing here.

I have no idea what you're trying to say. SotC is the major favorite, you expect Sims to be able to pull off the upset or keep it close even though you don't think Sims has strength?

This can't possibly be another DX/RB2 because Rock Band 2 was the favorite by the vast majority of people, while SotC is the case here. Shadow of the Colossus will probably smash The Sims, but then again it could surprise everyone and end up like TF2/Fable did.

Uh... maybe I didn't make myself clear.

I'm drawing now comparisons between the two matches based on expectations or favorites. I'm drawing them based on game types.

SotC = DX, because both are cult games with small fanbases that will push hard for a win.
Sims = RB2, because both are well-known casual games that nobody on gamefaqs actually cares about (and may actively hate).

And in the end, the matches will play out the same, with the niche title winning over the casual game due to a combination of anti-votes, apathy votes, and low votals.

I think what irks me about this match is that if it had been any other mainline FF game I would have pulled the trigger without a second thought. Then again, I did completely forget about the 2009 contest so forgot we actually had data on XII.

I'd never call Shadow of the Colossus cult, its a very well known and well received game. Its image is so high its sequel was part of Sony's main presentation at E3 a year ago. I swear that term is thrown about all too freely these days.

People picked Crisis Core because it represents FF7, contains a very popular character as a lead and figured the mass populace were braindead and predictable enough to vote on these things and not the actual game. I can see why they did that since things like that have gone down in the past but this contest seems to be different, a lot less voting based on name and a lot more based on the game.

If DX selling 1 million copies can still be cult, then SotC selling less than 1 million over 5+ years can still be considered cult. Not to mention a LOT of people on board 8 will argue about how horrible the game is.

If we're applying the cult game > popular game rule here, I think it's probably obsolete by now with the TWEWY/DR match (heck even with the DS/MM9 match). I'm pretty sure SotC >>>>> Sims, but I'm really not very confident on that rule anymore.

And I agree on SotC not being that much of a cult game really.

I'm pretty sure I never actually said that. I'm pretty sure I drew similarities between that match and 1 other match, not every cult/casual match in the contest.

Also, I guess this means DX no longer has cult status.

Dues Ex is only cult on Gamefaqs because

a) It's a PC game.
b) It's a 10 year old game whose target audience at the time are probably in their 30's by now.

It's in no way "cult" among PC gamers or the community in general, its a well renowned game that influenced many things which followed it. By their nature cult games probably don't get into these contests very often, there's some exceptions I can think of like Grim Fandango, Nights into dreams etc that do fit the bill but even stuff like Monkey Island, Persona and Phoenix Wright which were once cult have probably progressed past that at this stage.

A downloadable title from popcap, and one that should be weaker than Braid? Yeah, its getting 75% minimum

Mass Effect was very weak last time around (easy loss to L4D, almost doubled by Halo 3, only 28% on Fallout 3), so it should be easy to tell whether the sequel has helped it out. If it crushes Skies/BG2, we'll know. 2K10 Shepard certainly gave us an indication, though. Doubt that guy would get 65/35'd by Magus.

ME2 is the exact kind of game that would boost the original. You need to play ME1 to get the full experience.

With that said, I'd vote ME2>a lot of games in this bracket>ME1.

I would be surprised to find out ME2 didn't help ME1, honestly. I don't think Skies / BG2 stand much of a chance against Mass Effect; I know some people kind of questioned that round 2 match, but that's been a no brainer for me since the contest started. ME1 / FFXII (Portal) has always been, in my mind, the big match of this division. Think there's good potential there, or at least was before Portal put up those huge numbers. Guess it depends on where Gears 2 stands.

ME1 is an average shooter with bad RPG elements, cut-and-paste environments, an average main cast, and just not a lot of soul in it. ME2 beats it out in every category possible.

I do agree cast and story is better in ME2. But they took out like all the RPG elements, even getting rid of inventory and auto level up for each mission instead of xp per kill. Mass Effect 2 is better in "playing a movie" sense I guess, but ME1 was better if I wanted to play a fun game.

ME2 is more of a third-person shooter than a RPG on the gameplay side, but that's not a bad thing. The level of polish in ME2 is crazy - almost no game is as well-made and fun to play as ME2. I enjoyed the RPG elements from ME1, I wish more of the stats would have returned in ME2 (at the least, we need more of them in ME3), but the mechanics are miles ahead of the first game. It was rough around the edges in ME1, enjoyable but rough, and they understood and fixed that in the second one. I don't think you need to cycle through clunky menus in order to create a great RPG.

And its not like I don't think ME2 isn't a great game.. I'd give it a 9/10. Just to me, Mass Effect is 9.5/10, and possibly close to a 10. Only game this gen that competes with Fallout 3 for me in terms of best game of the gen.

ME1's RPG needed to be taken out. They were just plain terrible. The detailed character growth was good, but the awkward combat? The worst inventory system in any game I've ever played? No thanks!

ZFS | Posted 11/11/2010 11:26:01 AM | message detail
The inventory system in ME1 the real standout there. I think the rest of the game is great -- better than any other game this gen not named ME2 -- but that inventory system, good lord. That was the thing of nightmares, it was something out of a bad 90s SNES RPG.
