SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

That was mainly my reasoning for taking FF12 > Portal. Despite FF12 being weaker than the other mainline games, it still went toe-to-toe with Half-Life 2(a game I can't see Portal being stronger then).

But I've been wrong before!

That, plus "zomg SFF" complaints will be thrown about. I think both titles should be close, if not at, Half-Life 2 level of strength. Couple them together in a night match, and I think it can be pretty interesting(although that board vote is gonna put FF12 in hole for sure)

Portal isn't just any FPS, and you have to get that stigma out of your head. There's very few people here who only play jRPGs and ignore everything else. JRPGs are rare these days, and since this is a contest based on the past decade where very few popular jRPGs came out, you're pretty much cutting your fanatics big time.

Also, Portal isn't an FPS. It's Portal, you know, the game that gets mad respect and is universally loved just about everywhere.

Goldeneye is still a pretty high mark to beat and Gears of War 2 may really just be horribly weak. I'd probably still back Goldeneye over Portal.

The opponent being an FPS thing is what I used to justify Dissidia.

If Modern Warfare didn't stir up the hate, Portal definitely won't/

My first reaction: Man, am I glad I picked TTYD > Gears 1

My second reaction: Man, I hope FFXII kills really kills Crisis Core later.

My third reaction: Eh, Crisis Core would probably stomp Gears 2 here anyway. This game sucks.

Well I'm glad I took Portal through to RE4! Don't think it has much chance there though - FFXII will be much stronger than Gears of War 2, and probably gets into the 40s. RE4 shouldn't have difficulty getting more than 60% on FFXII (even taking its value from the MGS3/Oblivion match and comparing through Twilight Princess it gets 56%, and that won't be hurt by a 1v1 format).

Are you joking? Gears 2 was a slap in the face for Gears 1 fans. Gears 2 had horde which was amazing but the MP was a step down and people hated it(like me who is a massive gears fan). Portal wouldn't be getting anywhere near 70% against Gears 1.

IGN =/= This site. Otherwise Halo would be strongest game and noone would care about obscure JRPG's.

And Gears 2 was better than Gears 1 in many ways..but not the most important. MP was a bastardization of a Modern FPS. Gears 1 You didn't have matchmaking crap. nerfed Shotgun and pathetic stealth grenades... and could play whatever you want and have flexible options in terms of private play..peopel liked it, then they put in all this other crap like Halo.

And it's HORDE mode..not FIREFIGHT. Please don't use Halo terminology.

DR seems to have become the favorite over P4, but I'm not sure about that. Most people's logic seems to be that P4>TWE, but in a day match DR>P4>TWE. That seems like a relatively narrow window to me. If I had to pick one I'd pick P4 still, although it's close to a toss-up.

I agree with this. Portal is the clear favorite over FF12 right now (although I wouldn't write FF12 off), but I really don't think it will beat RE4. As he said, RE4 is "stupidly well respected".

I never really though Gears had much shot against Paper Mario so this doesn't change much on that for me.

I have been looking at the PM/World of Warcraft round 2 match though. I understand why WoW was the favorite, but a Mario game losing to World of Warcraft on GameFAQs just...seems wrong.

I don't know what the critical consensus is, but everyone knew Gears>Gears 2. I'd take Gears to 60/40 Gears 2 before SFF.

this match looks much more reasonable now that we're not at 80%. Portal's still doing great but it's not blowing minds. Gears 2 has always sucked on this site.

the ball's in FF12's court to crush Crisis Core. otherwise it's going in as a big underdog.
