There is no "Xbox hierarchy" where Halo 3 has an edge just because it's on the 360. I believe this is a very shaky argument. There is a Halo game hierarchy and Halo>Halo 3.

IMO Halo 3>Halo 1 debate is just typical stats topic overanalysis. I've never given this match a second thought.

I thought Halo 1 > Halo 3 was pretty obvious, but then I don't know the Halo fanbase too well. I will pontificate however that Ganondorf > Zelda on the LoZ hierarchy, at least for players who started after OOT, which is the group that will decide the match.

Halo 3 over 1 seems like suicide to me. this isn't a 360 vs. Xbox thing because Halo transcends the Xbox. it's not like Halo has a poor playrate.

Was there anything in the 2009 contest that indicated Halo: CE was clearly indirectly stronger than 3? It got more than doubled by Melee despite Zelda in the poll, and then it went ahead and lost to that same Zelda in that same poll. It was also in danger of almost losing out in Round 1. I think the original Halo support is due largely to people assuming it'll win due to respect factor, starting the series, and helping to significantly influence console gaming - not because of any results that clearly indicate 1>3.

Halo 3 could have better results and I'd still take 1. it's just a much bigger game.

it's like taking Modern Warfare 2 > COD4. MW2 sold better and gets more players but the core fans just prefer the original.

I was under the impression people simply liked Halo 1 more as a game- i.e. most players of both think it is a better game. Halo 3 was hyped a huge amount (so much so that Master Chief got within 2% of Solid Snake even on a site that despises Halo, Gamefaqs) but it faded very quickly, because it did not live up to its hype- which was generated by the earlier Halo games.

I think the general feeling among the fanbase is that Halo 1 had the best campaign mode; that alone could easily be enough on GameFAQs.

And why not bring up Halo 3 averaging about 42% on Fallout 3? I'm not sure if Halo: CE can outdo that by anything significant.

I hate the constant idea of there being a system-hierarchy in favor of Halo when we've seen SW:KotOR nearly beat the original and Hayabusa upset MC. Hated it for awhile!


If you really want to bring up the hierarchy again though, let me throw this out there: systems aside, Halo is nothing to the 360 compared to what it meant to the Xbox. Halo started a revolution as a launch-game and Halo 2 paved the road to play online for mainstream-gamers on consoles, plus there was little else for fans of the console to clamor to if they didn't like Halo. It was the premier FPS-series for six years because of those two games, mainly the original, and that series was THE reason to be hyped about the 460 for a long time...

...meanwhile, Halo 3 -- while huge -- could have still lost to several FPSs on GameFAQs just from 2007 (CoD4, Orange Box [Portal, plus boosting HL2 significantly if you want to count that], Bioshock). CoD has over-shadowed Halo by large amounts every year since 2007 AND helped fill the FPS-gap on the 360 until Halo 3 finally came. I don't think Reach is expected to beat Black Ops in many places, and ODST/Wars combined would have still lost to multiple FPSs last year (MW2, Borderlands, even L4D2). Halo is now a distant second place in the FPS-genre and the 360 has a significantly stronger library, so it's not as easy for Halo to shine now or again, especially without Bungie anymore.

360 > Xbox, sure...but there's not going to be a system hierarchy here. Super Metroid/Metroid Prime would be a good match and perhaps people would favor SM, but it shouldn't be because the SNES kills the Gamecube. Same thing applies here. Save the system-based jibba-jabba for a system-contest.

I don't think KH2 beating KH1 would give Brawl any greater chance against Melee. I put KH2 and Brawl in my bracket because, not only are they newer, but at the time of their release almost everyone thought KH2 and Brawl were better than their predecessors (even IF it's not so much the opinion anymore). But I could easily get both wrong....

Analysis

This is quite easily the weakest four-pack of the contest. One of these four fodder games will not only win once, but twice. While this match is a toss-up I was quite surprised to find out that Dead Rising was the favourite to win. For these types of matches the board goes with the game that they like most. I initially thought people knew something about Dead Rising that I didn’t, but then I saw that most people were taking Persona 4 over it so now I’m not sure what to think.

In an attempt to show that TWEWY is weak some people keep bringing up the fact that Neku lost to Laharl in the previous contest. While that’s true and given what Laharl did to Sora in the following round I wouldn’t be surprised if Frank West lost by just as much. Though if you want to bring characters and games up just take a look at how action games perform compare to their main character. Of course I wouldn’t be surprised if this was an exception since Frank West doesn’t look as cool as the average action hero and the game is truly more about killing zombies than anything else.

GotY polls don’t really tell us much either. TWEWY may have looked decent in the DS poll, but it probably benefitted from Square LFF as it was quite crushed by LittleBigPlanet. Dead Rising wasn’t any better getting crushed by Gears of War and a 360 version of Oblivion. Dead Rising does have the advantage of Dead Rising 2 coming out about two months ago, but it does seem that game came and went on GameFAQs.

In the previous contest I was a big supporter that TWEWY would have won over Persona 4, too bad SBAllen used the Add/Remove gimmick to add in his own game that he liked so we never got to see that match-up. Personally I find it weird that people are taking Dead Rising in this match, but not next round. It’s not like Persona 4 is bringing anything more to the table than TWEWY has.
