Another case of blindly staring at stats and not using your head. No way would Sephiroth be stronger than Cloud back then unless you think Magus could have made it to the finals against Link.

Uhhh..."using your head" would clearly imply Seph at worst equals Cloud in 2K2. Just look at their actual matches and how they performed, and what happened to the three KH characters between years. And what in the world does this have to do with Magus?

The updater is working, but now there's a 1:01 update right after the 1:00 update. LOL at a -2573 vote update for KOTOR on the 1:01 update.

Heh, yeah. Looks like updates will be out of order for the next hour or so. I'll try to adjust the update times manually after the match.

I've thought of sorting the table by vote sums instead of times, however the problem there is the match where cheat votes were removed. Sorting by votes there would mess things up.

I guess that's possible. Halo did edge it out in a 4-way but I could see some argument for KOTOR winning 1v1. It'd be very debatable, though I'd still pick Halo logically (of course in an actual bracket I'd go with KOTOR just because going with Halo anything makes me too nervous, plus I love Star Wars).

You need logical arguments to argue against Sephiroth being the #2, moreso than for it. Logical arguments can of course be made - Link/Mario SFF, Mario stuffing, PGC, Sunshine; though the degree they need to hold true is large. The 'default' and most reasonable argument is that things weren't too far from what appeared at face value - that Sephiroth was the 2nd strongest guy in 2K2.

Although to rain on your parade a bit, it would be for less than a year since the contests began, since Kingdom Hearts came out in Fall 2K2 and Cloud probably passed him up within a few months of that :P

KotOR would be doing notably better in a day match. Devil May Cry is also almost assuredly stronger than Ninja Gaiden, and KotOR has no possible SFF advantage over DMC like Halo may have had over NG. You combine all that with possible Halo anti-voting in this 1v1 format (along with KotOR possibly being hurt more by Diablo II in 2009), and I absolutely take KotOR over Halo or any other Xbox exclusive, day match or night.

I really doubt Mass Effect 2 can beat it, either. KotOR has had way too much time to gain a following and respect, and it has aged quite well.

This isn't *that* impressive. I don't know that this match sways me in either direction concerning Halo and KOTOR, which should be a close match either way. Mass Effect 2 would have a great shot at being the most popular Xbox exclusive game on the site, though it won't be for much longer -- the PS3 version comes out in January.

Oh, and let's take a look at this gem too:

Comparing Magus to Sephiroth is a pretty big mistake in the first place. There really is no comparison to Sephiroth. There are almost no cases where the villain of the game can come ANYWHERE close to the hero (Kefka > the ensemble cast of FFVI is the only one I can think of, and the reason for that is different than Cloud/Sephiroth). The fact that Sephiroth could probably double the second strongest villain in this contest nowadays (Bowser or Ganondorf, take your pick), or at least come close to it, means that trying to make ANY other comparison is just silly.

And yeah, 58/42 isn't really what KOTOR needed here to make me think it could beat FFIX. Halo/KOTOR was always a tossup 1-on-1 anyway because of how close they came in the first place, but if KOTOR/Halo 1 is a debatable match, I don't know how in the world FFIX/KOTOR is.

SA's first few hours are really good compared to the rest of the match, just like GTA IV. Dead Space had a couple of good hours, but they feel like anomalies looking at how they did in the hours around them. I do appreciate Dead Space having a great final hour though since it gave me a #2 Oracle pick!

Mario gaining around 75% of the extra votes during Mario/Cloud doesn't seem unfeasible, considering a big pro-Mario site linked to it, a big Mario game came out, and overall the internet will favor Mario over Cloud. Hell, just at Gamespot, Mario could potentially double Cloud without any 4chan intervention (since I don't think they were involved in Cloud/Kratos). Even if 4chan was a big factor that match, Mario would still 60-40 Cloud at least, and considering the other factors involved, Mario tripling Cloud in the extra traffic seems pretty damn likely to me.

Prime is not a strong game, so if it works DMC3, that says more about DMC3 than it does about Prime.

Why people think Prime is strong (as in, beat HL2 strong) is beyond me...

Analysis

You can basically take everything that we’ve learned from Path of Radiance/WWF No Mercy and apply it to here. You have a low tier Nintendo game going up against a sports game. I do however feel that the win will be a lower blowout than what Path of Radiance did.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I feel that Path of Radiance has a great chance at being the strongest Fire Emblem game and even if it isn’t it’ll at least be pretty close. Path of Radiance does have the advantage of being on a console plus the game is quite loved among Fire Emblem fans, at least between the English speaking games. While I don’t see it as a big boost people knowing that Ike is in that game probably helps, then again Melee brought Fire Emblem over to North America.

While Pro Skater 2 is a sports game I feel that the game does get some respect. It is considered by a lot of people to be a great game and while no one is going to rank it among their favourite’s people still have good memories of it. Of course like WWF No Mercy the game came out at the end of the lifespan for both the Nintendo 64 and Playstation.

70% is very possible after seeing Path of Radiance and it goes to show you that even weak entrants can blow something away given the right opponent. One reason that I’m glad that matches are 12 hours is that matches like these don’t last an entire day. Too bad this is on the weekend instead of a weekday.

I don't really see a way for MP to have an easy time with SW:KotOR without a boost since the last contest. It's not like their GTA-opponents suggest much difference between them for BGE2, MP's only seven spots ahead in the Top 100 List, and Starcraft aside there probably wasn't much difference between them in BGE1 either. They've always been pretty close. MP could still impress by boosting...but judging from the one-seed poll pre-contest and its fair performance on Star Ocean, it probably won't. The most impressive thing it's done is earn a one-seed, though SW:KotOR also surprised me by getting a three-seed.

If DMC3's trounced while MP and SW:KotOR do as expected the rest of the contest, then yeah, I'll just assume DMC > DMC3...that seems reasonable.
