Yeah, he's stronger than Sephiroth post-KH, but they looked almost equal in 2003 and a lot of people thought they were pretty close in 2002.

Besides, 58/42 is a huge margin to expect from Cloud/Mario in 2002. That seems to reflect really poorly on Mario.

Of course, Mario didn't look that great up to the day of the match, but still.

I agree with what you're saying, but that is what the numbers suggest, too bad we don't have more information on day of the match releases.

Zelda did pretty bad that contest anyway. She lost the ASV to Ezio (Yes, I know AC has a good day vote, but Zelda's supposed to have one, too) and didn't even really dominate the morning vote against Travis Touchdown of all characters. She just had a really bad contest, all things considered. None of her performances were really all that great.

Really? This is your excuse now? Despite the fact that the morning vote and ASV are strongly correlated, that Ratchet did better in NA than Europe in every poll he's been in?

You should really watch Leon's trend charts more often.

Basically ASV means a lot less because the DSV is already close to what the ASV has compare to the FNV is to the morning vote. That is why we don't see much of a percent change in day matches.

I would imagine it's a bigger deal in a 12-hour match day match. The game comes out, people buy it, come home and check GameFAQs and they see Golden Sun on the front page.

And really, considering how Aeris went on to perform in later contests, she overperformed in that match anyway.

I think it was a lot more than SMS being released though. That match had the most aberrant votals we have ever seen in contest history. Cloud lost that match and still received MORE VOTES THAN ANY PREVIOUS CHARACTER IN ANY CONTEST MATCH. I think he probably broke the record for most votes of anything in any Gamefaqs poll too, though I'm not sure of it. Cloud received more votes against Mario than he received against Fox, Pikachu, and Alucard. More than Sephiroth recieved against Serious Sam or whoever he faced. More than Megaman against Ms. Pac-Man. More than Link against Strider Hiryu. And he still lost.

The only other time we've seen an extra 50,000 votes appear out of nowhere was L-Block.

You are overestimating how many people are going to be voting GS because of the release a tiny bit....

It sold around 45k in Japan in 3 days so it's acceptable, but doesn't look like match-changing worthy level sales. Of course it's not quite as popular in Japan compared to Europe and the States.

Is Golden Sun really that hyped anyways? I can't find any pre-order listings for it and it goes all the way down to 37k for vgchartz.

It does have three weeks to gain some though, but if people aren't getting the must buy it asap feeling then don't expect much of a boost.

The trends in this match look weird already. After 1:21 PM, San Andreas started going up like crazy until 2:56 PM before going back down again. San Andreas is still going down again, although those last few updates make it seem like it might go back up again.

I think the vote totals may be due to the ad on the front page, after you load it expands pushing the poll away so you can't see it.

I had no idea there was an ad on the front page until you pointed it out. I had to turn off Adblock and also turn off a setting in GameFOX that blocks the ads. After I did that, I saw an ad on the homepage in the form of a background image for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Also worth mentioning that the homepage background image does not show up if you are using the NeoClassic, NeoClassic Blue, or Nine Standard stylesheets. And I use Nine Standard, so I would not see the background image even if it wasn't for GameFOX. With the other stylesheets, the background image does show up.

There is also an ad on the homepage above the "Today on GameFAQs" header, but that doesn't seem to interfere with the positioning of the poll.

Probably confirms that Path of Radiance's performance was entirely because of No Mercy being turbofodder. Tony Hawk's not much higher than No Mercy either, so FE7 might give us a repeat performance of that.

Analysis

There were a few people arguing for the upset, but ever since Devil May Cry 3 flopped it pretty much went away. Sure Mother 3 is stronger than what we gave credit for, but there is still a limit that most people can give it. There seems to be some debate on to which Devil May Cry game would be stronger and based on the stats topic it seems that most people believe that 3 is the stronger game which can’t mean good things to the original.

Knights of the Old Republic was a surprise in the last game contest where most people thought the game was largely forgotten and would finish last. Instead it gave Halo a fight for second place which prompted the board to rally for Darth Revan. While the game isn’t a world beater it shouldn’t have much of a problem against an action game that has yet to show us or give reason it has any strength.

I’ve always been a big supporter that when a Devil May Cry game reached the contest it would flop terribly so I believe Knights of the Old Republic has a great chance at breaking 60% in this match. Even in the vote-in it was very easily beaten by Assassin’s Creed, a game that was given mixed reviews and something I would take to lose in this match had it been placed here.

I'll be honest, seeing Civ IV's user ratings made me change too. Was already on the fence before seeing that, and...yeah. I know they need to be taken with a big grain of salt (I mean look at what the #1 is), but that's just terrible.

Keep in mind "My Games" is a relatively new feature and most people only add games as they play them and don't really go back and add games they had played before. Persona fans may simply be a lot more likely to bother with this than Civ fans.
