Analysis

At the half way point we’ve reached our third and final board favourite to win this contest. Both Smash games have done their job to look good and now it’s Final Fantasy X’s turn to show what it can do. I know these matches don’t mean anything, but a bad start here would probably convince some people that Final Fantasy X is in danger. Oddly enough Final Fantasy X was the overall one seed after the nominations yet it gets listed here instead of the top of the bracket. Then again having it and both Smash games in the same half would be pretty crazy.

It seems that Viewtiful Joe hasn’t aged well, not that he was very strong to begin with. In 2004 the character gave Tails his first win, but in 2007 he was just crushed in his four-pack. Even in the vote-in the game was the weakest one to make the bracket losing to titles such as Guitar Hero II and Wii Sports, games you’d expect to perform poorly since they run largely on apathy which is hard to get in a 12-way match. The game is also an action game and those have a history of being fairly weak.

Final Fantasy X should break 80% and I would be pretty surprised if it failed to do so. I would blame it on Viewtiful Joe having hidden and surprising strength, but the two Smash games would win this round. Some people have called it unfair that Final Fantasy X has such an easy path to the final again, but looking at some of its future opponents I can tell it won’t be an easy ride once we get out of the division.

My worst pick was Serious Sam > Mega Man no question. Barely knew anything about Mega Man at the time.

Out of matches where I really should have known better? Magus > Crono and Terra to the Sweet Sixteen for sure.
