Shenmue will definitely do a lot more than 20%. Shenmue is both well-known and loved, it's not some super obscure thing no one has played or heard of.

The Dreamcast is obviously a weak system, but Shenmue was easily one of its most high-profile games outside Sonic and Code Veronica. That alone will count for something. The game has also avoided the dredges of what we now call "turbofodder" in its few poll appearances, and even Ryo Hazuki has a contest win to his credit. It would take an extremely strong game to put up 80%+ on Shenmue; doubt TP has that kind of pop.

SA2 barely beat Shenmue and lost to SF4, which got 22.14% on SSBB last year. LoZ:TP is weaker than SSBB and literally trusting the numbers here won't be perfect, but it'll be an easy tripling and maybe LoZ:TP can push for 80%. Afterall, FO3 got 81% on a game I would have taken to beat Shenmue pre-contest...so there's still a chance for a blow-out bigger than that in my mind.

Good luck to it retaining 2004's "strength" when the Dreamcast has been irrelevant for nearly a decade and Sega hasn't been much more important.

Shenmue would easily beat Infamous. I'd give it like 55%. People here are underestimating Shenmue quite a bit. Its fodder, but its not bottom of the barrel fodder. If TP gets like low 80s here like people think, I'd be more impressed then with what Melee did.

Wow, I just checked the stats for the last match. Only 26.23% of brackets had RSE winning.

Man, I'm really glad RSE pulled through! It's great news for my bracket, and more importantly, it's a victory for one of the most underrated games ever.

Yeah, after getting sucked into the WC3 and No Mercy hype trains, I kept my pick set to RSE this time around, and it paid off. Though my bracket has RSE beating Mario Galaxy, so I may end up losing two points that way next round, depending on how SMG's strength translates from 4-way to 1v1.

I had RSE winning in my bracket but not where it mattered.

Also, Shenmue should get around 20%, no more than 25% at best. It got tripled by Wind Waker when the Dreamcast was still semi-relevant. We've seen all things Dreamcast fall off in recent years, and Shenmue shouldn't be any different.

Eh, I would sooner trust in Shenmue to hold up than I would Sonic or Skies of Arcadia. Shenmue gets far more respect than either of those two games. I wouldn't bet on TP getting 80%, it'll probably be a fair amount below that.

Thats the most recent relevant poll we have for Shenmue. If we do Shenmue = SA2, then thats really not that bad, especially since we all know SF4 is better then it showed in that round 1 match last contest. And I know I wouldnt take TP to get 80% on SF4.

Something interesting I just noticed. In CB8, after Round 26 (Laharl vs Neku) we had exactly 8 perfect brackets remaining. Right now in GotD we also have exactly 8 perfect brackets remaining. The number of -1 brackets is also really close. We had 55 in CB8 and we have 54 right now. We have roughly 22% more brackets in GotD compared to CB8 as well. CB8 had a number of tough matches to start with but it seems GotD has proven to be even tougher. I guess most people already knew that from looking at their score, though. <_<

Errr. what do people have for Bioshcok Star wars? I know Bioshock was a classic but Star wars has a far larger following even though battlefront 2 is probably no way near as strong as KOTOR.

I thought i had MGS4 > GSC, turns out it's the other way round. Don't know what to think about that. Despite getting quite a few tossups wrong already...that's the hardest one for me. Don't really mind that i've got G/S/C over MGS4 but wouldn't really mind if i had it the other way either. If it beats MM and WW, the momentum is there and it wouldn't at all suprise me if it manages to beat FFX as well, despite me having it losing.

Analysis

Some people are expecting this match to be one of the biggest blowouts of the contest and it does have potential for it to be one. Twilight Princess is just slightly below the three favourites to win the contest while Shenmue was a Dreamcast game that was ported to the Xbox and is one of two games from the original contest that can be in this contest that failed to make the previous contest.

Shenmue did however put a decent performance against Final Fantasy X as it avoided getting tripled. A lot has changed since then and with the Dreamcast becoming more forgotten it’s likely that the game is weaker today. At the same time Shenmue continues to have its small hardcore fanbase.

Twilight Princess should be able to get a tripling here as Shenmue isn’t as strong as it use to be. Its hardcore base will keep it from getting totally embarrassed. This is expected when you’re going up against one of the strongest games; too bad Shenmue didn’t get someone like Baldur’s Gate II as their opponent.

Winter 2010 - 52590 for Night Matches and 73248 for Day Matches. Overall average is 127518.

For Winter 2010, in order to obtain an average to adjust for the 24 hour, 64 match format of the previous contests, it was necessary to sum up the vote totals of all 127 matches and then divide that by 64. In doing that, the average was 127518, which might be a little high for the last contest.

Whoops, I was supposed to divide by 63 and not 64, since I just remembered that there are 63 matches under the old 24 hour format. Well, besides the Villains Contest and Best Series Ever, which had 31 matches. In that case, correcting my mistake for Winter 2010 gives me 129543 instead.



Anyways, I just noticed that some matches on creativename's website are missing. There are no matches updates for the following matches:

CB8 - Poll 3761
BGE2009 - Poll 3446, 3456, 3461, 3462, 3483, 3485, 3486, and 3496
CB7 - Poll 3260
CB6 - Poll 2876

I assume those matches were deleted from the database when the site glitched up (or suffered a database crash). BGE2009 was most heavily affected by the site glitch up (or database crash). I don't know if TRE has the match updates for those missing matches, although I do have the match updates for Poll 3761 and 2876.

Wow, RSE was the huge bracket underdog? That's odd. It was a 2:1 favorite in the BOP and a huge favorite in the Oracle. I guess casuals putting too much stock in all things GTA and Halo strikes again - but I wouldn't have thought it would happen that badly against Pokemon of all things.

As others have said, Shenmue will be a lot weaker than back then. The only direction it's strength could possibly have gone is down, perhaps way down. Twilight Princess will embarrass it, there is no way I can see it avoiding the tripling.
