~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Well, a lot of that would be SFF if it happens. OOT put up 75% or so on Mario 64, a legit top 5 game.

Well, I don't know. I'm not sure I really buy TP beating Galaxy to the ground with SFF. Brawl made sense since it was a fanservice game with Mario and all, and I don't think that TP and Galaxy is so cut and dry like that.

I was mainly going off the GOTD poll (where TP got around a doubling despite WW in the poll) and Link/Mario. TP's the #3 Zelda, SMG is the #6 Mario probably (SM64, SMW, SMB3, SMB, SMRPG).

Anyone else mulling over Fire Emblem: PoR over Pokemon DPP? A longshot, but PoR might have some strength, and it's not like DPP is a powerhouse. Of course, even then DPP might get an easy doubling.

Guess it depends on whether you think PoR could stand up to Metroid Fusion. FE7 definitely wouldn't!

Well folks, my battle bracket has its first fanboy pick: RSE > GTAIV, even though all logic goes against it. I honestly love RSE, and man, I can't convince myself to go against my regular bracket!

...not yet, anyway...

Also, I really doubt FE: PoR could take on DPP, or even Metroid Fusion.

The only thing giving me faint hope of an RSE upset (aside from pure fanboyism) is Niko's terrible performance last year. But then again, Vercetti was shockingly close to PaRappa in '07, and yet Vice City was still respectable in the last Games contest...

I don't know, I'll probably switch to GTA4 later on. Not sure yet.

Why are people talking up GTA IV exactly? That's a bracket pick I have no idea why I made, and am seriously regretting right now. I've already switched my battle pick against it. Don't know if there's some poll that suggests differently or not, but I would be surprised if it went down differently.

Basically GTAIV was roughly Pokemon DPP's strength so for RSE to have a chance you'd have to bank on either Pokemon rising (you'd better be taking GSC to win the whole thing) or GTAIV dropping enough (highly possible). Seems like ever since Halo 3 won people have switched sides.

It's also possible that Pokemon RSE is somehow stronger than Pokemon DPP. DPP should defintely be more popular among current Pokemon fans but maybe enough people quit between gen 3 and 4 to give RSE the advantage.

I doubt that. Pretty sure RSE is the worst-selling mainline Pokemon generation. Ruby also came out at a time when Pokehate was at its highest, while Diamond came out during the resurgence. I'd say D/P probably have a higher playrate.

It's very likely GTA4 dropped enough in strength for R/S/E to take this. Even putting aside Niko's huge fall, GTA4 seemed like the kind of game that just came and went. It also seems like the kind of game people either don't like or at most feel apathetic about.

Galaxy doing terrible in Europe has nothing to do with Galaxy being terrible there. I don't remember Galaxy ever being terrible in Europe.

In the first match, Galaxy does better in Europe than the overall result, although that is because CoD4 is weaker in Europe than the overall result. In the second match, Galaxy does about 5% better in Europe, although Brawl (which is ungodly terrible in Europe) was in that match.

Galaxy doing terrible in Europe has to do with Beyond Good & Evil being ungodly popular in Europe. And it makes sense, because of this:

The Xbox version was developed by Ubisoft Milan. Milan is a city in Italy. The other versions were developed by Ubisoft Montpellier. Montpellier is a city in France. The publisher Ubisoft is based in France. So it's no surprise that a game developed in Europe and published by a European-based publisher would be strong in Europe. It's similar to how Monkey Island is strong in Europe because LucasArts is also based in Europe.

There certainly wasn't any rally of the size of No mercy for SotC, and I don't seem to remember it even getting a minor rally on board 8. So its nominations are mostly legit.

Of course, nominations=/= strength, as we can see on the current poll.
