Nintendo never expected it to be a big success, anyway.

Which was stupid.

The original Smash Bros. still has the best commercial for a video game ever.

And the game still sold millions so acting like people didn't play the original Smash Bros. is just plain ignorant.

The original Smash was never really that popular or that full of quality. By all intensive purposes, the series started with Melee, like GTA3 or Fallout 3 essentially started their series.

SSB sold several million copies and is likely more popular here than other places. It might not compare to SSBM and SSBB, but considering how popular they are, there's nothing really wrong with that.

1:00 | 56.55% | 43.45% | 6444

11:00 | 54.17% | 45.83% | 3367
12:00 | 53.45% | 46.55% | 3274

There wasn't a huge percentage shift, but Metroid does manage to do better during the dead zone and the DSV, while Pokemon does well with the Power Hour and the morning vote.

I kinda wish Smash Bros stayed in the last contest instead of replacing it with SC, just so we'd know how it compares to the newer Smash Games. I'd still expect them to at least double before SFF, though.

Which would still be pretty strong.

But it doesn't really matter how strong it is. The point is acting like people are unaware that the first game existed and didn't play it is wrong.

Perhaps you're right. I'm not exactly too knowledgeable when it comes to N64 games since I never had one, so I just go by what I read on gaming mags and stuff back then, and I never really heard of it back then. Maybe its aged well or something.

I admit first time I heard about it was through this infamous Electric Playground review of it though back in the early days of video game review sites, so that didn't exactly give me a good impression of the original Smash Bros.

The original Smash Bros. was awesome.

I still have no idea why Nintendo thought nobody would want to beat the crap out of each other with Nintendo characters. That seems like a no-brainer.

Fallout 3 essentially started its series? Unfair comparison, it just had the fortune of being the first Fallout released since gen 6 and the point where video games became socially acceptable. So yes, its sales figures are going to dwarf the rest of the series. Looking at it from a perspective of what percentage of gamers at the time actually played the game, Fallout 1 easily holds up.

Fallout 3 outsold the rest of its entire series in its first day of sales. I'd say it essentially started its series in terms of people actually knowing about it. I'm sure a good majority of the gaming population never heard of Fallout before Fallout 3.

But hey, at least it's not humiliating itself as badly as Platinum did last night!

No, Pokemon had the Power Hour and the morning vote. Fusion had the dead hours and the DSV, which generally favors night games.

Fusion did do better relative to Pokemon in America though.

That's my point. Fallout 3 only dwarfs the first in comparisons of absolutes. A good majority of the people who had never heard of Fallout before Fallout 3 never played video games while Fallout 1 was popular. You can compare numbers between series pre- and post-2000's and you end up with the same notion. Percentage-wise is completely different. Fallout was just as huge for a percentage of the gaming population in 1997 as Fallout 3 was in 2008.

Fallout 1 was never "popular". It was always an incredibly niche PC game that never even sold 100k copies. And plenty of people played video games, just because they didn't play niche 2d PC rpgs didn't make them not a gamer.

There was no incentive to actually buy Fallout because you could install it endlessly from the same CD. I've lost track of how many people used the copy I purchased back then to play the game.

I want to go back and adress one issue of the FE7/FE9 debate, namely that Ike was in Brawl. This is true, but it's not really anything in Ike's favor. Like Roy before him, Ike was in Brawl mainly because he was the most recent FE character.

What's more telling is that Lyn from FE7 is in Brawl as an Assist Trophy. That may not seem like much, but it does give her the third-most representation in Brawl out of any FE character. Add to this that it was four years after FE7 was released, and keep in mind that Lyn was barely relevant to the plot beyond FE7's tutorial stages. She may have even been created to introduce FE to western audiences. The fact that she would be relevant enough to warrant that treatment speaks volumes about how FE7 has remained popular among gamers.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on the DS is a remake of the first one and it has Marth. Not the best Fire Emblem, but it's okay.

Well, VC is a fantastic game, and if I had my way, it would win against Disgaea no problem.

But the fact is, the first game had low sales numbers, and the second game is a less-beloved PSP sequel. Disgaea, while also low sales numbers, has been around a lot longer and has two main-console sequels.

We'll probably be looking at something like a 40-60 split in favor of Disgaea.

It only got 83.50% on Mario Kart Wii in the GotY poll. You guys better not be calling for Brawl's head if it fails to triple it or something.

I reckon Disgaea's floor should still be higher than VCs.

It'll probably be a lot of neutrals voting in this one, so it's hard not to take VC when it has the higher seed, better pic, and when VC is also recognized as the better game overall. VC also has a pretty loyal fanbase, not bigger than Disgaeas obviously, but after VC cut it's price a lot of people tried it out after hearing all the good things. I think it's popularity has increased a lot of over the past year. Disgaea might win, but it feels like VC should win to me, so meh I'm going with VC..don't have much to bank anyways after my huge streak was killed by WCIII/Morrowind :[
