SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Twilight Princess isn't a great game, so there you go.

Anyway, I don't see any games so far that have looked this bad, and the pattern this match has had shows that it's only going to get worse for No Mercy. This showing is awful in every way. Very few matches will end this lopsided, and most of the time the winner will be stronger than PoR.

The only game that might show itself to be weaker is Braid.

Admittedly, when I say I take GCN > GBA, it stems more from just plugging it into a general case of Console > Handheld than anything else.

Nevertheless, I do believe it to be the case. It's just, I'm having a pretty hard time coming up with anything to defend it with other than Console v Handheld, so I definitely understand it seeming like a flimsy argument.

Not minority at all, since almost every Zelda fan thinks Ocarina or LTTP are the best in the series. After that people go with Zelda 1 (typically older gamers) or Majora's Mask, and after all that is when people bring up Twilight Princess and other stuff. Too much dumb hand-holding in that game for too long, and it isn't until the Arbiter's Grounds that the game stops being awful.

To be fair i some of us overestimated No mercy because it was popular what? almost 10 years ago. No mercy is without a doubt the most popular Wrestling game on this site but it's also one of the oldest this decade.

I just think games that first introduce people to a new universe have a series advantage in a contest like this. It's why I picked Melee > Brawl

We are aware (and most of the site is as well, I assume) that Melee wasn't the first Smash game, right...?

Here we see that TP has the same(slightly better than Zelda 1) reception from the fans but with a hell of a lot more votes, and higher critical reception. There's no denying that TP is the third most popular Zelda game on the site, and generally regarded as just after OoT and LttP.

If only all of TP was Arbiter's Ground!

I think TP definitely had points where it was on the MM tier for me, but it also had points where it just wasn't even close. Once I try to average it all out, it falls behind a number of Zelda games.

If TP was all like Arbiter's Ground, it might very well be my second favorite (I'm not sure Majora's Mask could be deposed in that respect, unless there was a Zelda game somewhat similar to it, so first was probably always out of reach.)

At least these fodder matches are one-pointers. Pretty much anything can happen between games that are both going to end up in the bottom 25% of the x-stats. This gap gets bridged in one day with Melee > Brawl.

Oddly enough, practically every game that was in a match last contest has won a match against newcomers. (SFIV, Deus Ex, Morrowind, Tales, Halo 3, and all of the obvious picks)

I'm guessing all the gamers played all of those games and realized they are that good. :D

Well, I never heard of the series till Melee, and at least from reviews, original Smash Bros was significantly lower than the newer games. Maybe it was well known, I dunno.No where near as well known as the newer ones I can guarantee though.


From Wiki: "The original Super Smash Bros., released in 1999 on the Nintendo 64, had a small budget and was originally a Japan-only release, but its domestic success led to a worldwide release"

Nintendo never expected it to be a big success, anyway.
