Yeah, on the part of the predictors for either expecting D/P to be strong like G/S/C, Fusion to be weak, or for there to be SFF in this match.

As I already stated, there are two very valid arguments that can actually be made by the Poke Defense Force, which is that 1) Fusion=unknown and 2) DPP doesn't necessarily reflect GSC. But trying to attack predictors (seriously?) rather than the actual game that is performing crappily, is just emotional defensiveness. This is not a good performance and while one shouldn't make too much of it for those reasons, it raises some flags for sure, even if you think they are minor flags.

And if D/P/P got 75% in this match, that'd just be SFF, so it wouldn't mean much for G/S/C either.

It would mean *everything* compared to 55%. Clearly that would at least mean it was strong enough to SFF. And of course, a 20% difference couldn't entirely be SFF to begin with, you don't go from "natural" 55/45 to 75/25 via SFF; to get 20 points of SFF you typically have to be much stronger to begin with, ala Link/Ganon. Again, if the relatively weak by Pokemon standards DPP got 75% here, Pokemon would be well positioned to probably own this contest. To try to argue otherwise is just being stubborn.

That is just a hypothetical to show that, yes, while the correlation between DPP/GSC might for all we know be low, the percent DPP has here isn't meaningless. Some may overstate it's importance, but you can't dismiss it as something people shouldn't worry about.

Niko's horrible performance last Character Battle is really the only thing that gives me pause about GTA IV > R/S/E, because if that carries over to the game, then there's no telling what we'll get out of that.

I agree with this. If GTA4 hasn't declined it should win. But it's GTA so a decline is quite possible.

Analysis

WWF No Mercy was the guru pick and before the contest it was thought it was going to be one of the weakest entrants in the entire contest yet when the bracket was released the hype for this match began and while Path of Radiance is the favourite WWF No Mercy does have support from 40% of the board. While I suspect Path of Radiance to be pretty weak too I feel this is more the board trying to push the guru pick through than the board actually seeing any strength.

WWF No Mercy was known as the wrestling game back when wrestling was still popular. While the game was known and played by a decent number of people the game is fairly low on the Nintendo 64 totem pole. I would expect every single Nintendo 64 game in this contest to win over it with ease. Even looking at the top 10 user lists that every old console does at their board has WWF No Mercy borderline between games that no one cares about and games that people like.

You could argue that Path of Radiance could have strength because Ike is decent, but I would suspect Ike’s performance to be from Brawl than Fire Emblem. Even in 2007 I wouldn’t be surprised if most of his strength came from Brawl hype. On a more serious note Path of Radiance is a popular game in the fanbase and the move to console gaming is also a help. A major problem with Fire Emblem is that we have very little information on the games outside of SFF against other Nintendo titles. The only time we’ve seen it without Nintendo was in the series contest where it easily defeated Silent Hill and put up impressive numbers against Metal Gear and while Metal Gear had a terrible picture so did Fire Emblem.

While the box art has the pictures of famous wrestlers in the game I have a feeling that it might hurt as much as it helps. As a gamer I tend to shy away from real life pictures of people on the box since my gamer sense is telling me not to pick it up. Either way I feel that the board’s initial assessment of WWF No Mercy was correct and that the game will be one of the weakest in the bracket and the only reason people are talking about it is because the few wrestling fans on the board hyped it up plus with this being the guru choice we all secretly wish that we didn’t nominate a weak game.

As for DPP, Metroid Fusion did well enough on RE5 which gave a scare to ToS. MF finished a little under RE5 in their vote-in, and DP's beating it a little worse than ToS beat RE5. ToS did rather fine last year while DP looked bad, so DP looking like ToS is pretty dang good now.

Then again, DPP shouldn't really be compared to GSC anyway. I do wanna mention that, if this ToS/DPP comparison is true about DPP improving from last year, that it might be because Platinum was added to its name. If it is responsible for that, GSC looks better too.


Then again, I'm the only one who's not looking at this so negatively, so whatever. People had too high of expectations based off of it last year, but I think it's doing fine considering last year and the vote-ins with how RE5 did.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if WWF finished bottom 10 in the X-Stats.

If FE puts down a really good beating on it (say 70%), only for FE to get beat down by Pokemon, which will in turn get completely clobbered by Brawl.

I honestly think that Galaxy will overperform in its matches, then Twilight Princess will turn around and get killed by Kingdom Hearts, which will in turn get slaughtered by Melee/Brawl (likely the former).
