Do we have any real reason to believe the Pokemon games really deviate a ton in strength though? I'm sure it's quite a lot weaker than GSC, but GSC would probably thrash GTA4 badly.

Yeah but worst pokemon generation is relative to the other pokemon generations. It was still a really fun game (and the pokemon I've put the most hours into, personally). I don't think that it's nearly on the same level as sunshine, which is worse because Pokemon > Mario in games contests, from what I can tell, and Sunshine wasn't just the worst 3D mario, but it completely changed the formula, which wasn't a great decision. RSE is just the worst of an awesome series that's consistent throughout. I mean something has to be the worst. It's not necessarily a black sheep like Sunshine is because Sunshine is just so vastly different because it changes the mechanics completely.

Anyone have the latest results from the BOP? The older one I have shows RSE with 22 picks vs.12 for GTA4. So I don't get people talking about GTA like it's the favorite.

GTAIV looked a good bit stronger than D/P least year. D/P>R/S/E. It seems kind of simple to me.

DP might've been underrated because it was with Galaxy. Though I'm not sure if that mattered or not.

I could be 100% wrong, but I just don't see GTA beating a main series pokemon game. If we were talking GTA:SA against RSE, and it was a night match, I MIGHT give it the benefit of the doubt. But as it is, GTA3 (which I would take to beat GTA4 any day of the week) couldn't even double LittleBigPlanet. I think it's safe to assume that RSE has the first round locked (possibly even the second round, considering how poorly Galaxy seems to do in these contests).

The BOP is in my sig, RSE is favoured 2:1 in that match.

Favorite is different than guarantee. That's one match.

People talking about GTA4 vs. Galaxy like it's a given makes no sense at all, considering GTA4 is a sizable underdog to even get there.

And yes, my guess is that GTA4 is the weakest GTA, although they're probably all around the same strength.

Mario/Pokemon has nintendo SFF, and D/P weren't nearly as respected as they are now because Platinum wasn't out yet. Platinum basically raised everyone's opinions of 4th gen like fivefold.

Pokemon has never had significant overlap with anything. They hurt each other, but it wasn't by much. And even if DP is stronger, I still would've taken it in 2009 over RSE.

Analysis

It took a while to realize how much of a beating Guitar Hero II was going to get in this match, but after looking at some factors almost nothing is going to go Guitar Hero II’s way. Melee is the first game so far to have a great chance at winning the contest so it’ll be interesting to see what its first impression is going to look like.

With Rock Band 2 flopping to Deus Ex earlier my faith in rhythm based games are reached an all-time low. As awesome as Deus Ex was the game has shown to be fairly weak on GameFAQs and I don’t see any reason other than Rock Band 2’s weakness for why it has won. I also figure that Rock Band 2 is the stronger game out of the two, but Guitar Hero II does hold a special place in the heart of some fans since it was the last game before the series sold out on the fans.

Guitar Hero II couldn’t even defeat Wii Sports in the battle for apathy in a 12-way match where apathy voting should be at its lowest. Also like Halo Guitar Hero II was a game played when friends came over and like Halo last year it is possible that Melee could crush it even worse than usual since the Smash series is the king of multi-player parties on GameFAQs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Melee pushed 90% which would make it a great start for its title bid.

As decent as Morrowind was last contest it was in a match with 3 other PS2 games (whether that means anything is debatable) while Warcraft III has some breathing room between Morrowind and Starcraft/Diablo II/WoW.

Niko took an absolutely massive tumble in between the last two Character Battles, so I wouldn't be surprised if GTAIV was quite a bit weaker as well.

I'm personally betting on Pokemon, and I'm feeling fairly confident about it - for the moment, I'm not planning on banking. I don't think RSE is as disliked as some think; though it's the least popular Pokemon generation, it was still the top-selling GBA game by a mile, and most people I've talked to like it - just not as much as the other games. On the other hand, GTAIV is quite possibly the most frequent answer whenever a "Most Overrated Game Ever" topic rolls around.

WC3 is probably going to be weaker than Starcraft/Diablo II/WoW. We not sure how much exactly but there's enough room between Starcraft/Diablo II/WoW and Morrowind for WC3 to be somewhat weaker before bumping into Morrowind.

I'm glad we're finally going to get to see a top 10 game in action tonight. It's debatable whether or not we've even seen a top 20 game so far this contest, which is quite astonishing after 3 divisions. I'm rather expecting Melee to disappoint though- one, it's a night match, and two, I think Smash looked weaker last contest than most people gave it credit for.

...but Deus Ex fans were whining about their game's margin of victory! It was a massive underdog that nonetheless won the match, and they were still whining. Talk about obnoxious. :\

You're probably right, though for what it's worth, I actually think Morrowind's boxart is pretty good. Though not flashy by any means, it's a classy boxart nonetheless.

I took Warcraft but I really have no idea what the hell's going to happen in that match.

As for Pokemon, I think in terms of contest strength it's going to be like this:

RBY > GSC > DPP > RSE

With a small gap between RBY and GSC, big gap between GSC and DPP, and small gap between DPP and RSE. Gen 3 is great - I love all four gens and await the fifth anxiously - but it was the most recent gen during Pokemon's worst years, after the inital Pokefever had died off but before it came roaring back with gen 4 and stopped getting antivoted so much. I think RSE will beat GTA4 and then lose gracefully to Galaxy.

Tbh, I don't actually remember when Oblivion came out. Though this contest thusfar has shown a strong tendency to avoid series-voting, I'd feel a lot better about WC3 if this were a night match.

Oh it matters that it's a night match. Day Smash and Night Smash are worlds apart. Day Smash is a top 5 game, Night Smash is not top 10. Well, okay, top 5 and top 15 aren't worlds apart, but the day/night spread for Smash is about as big as it gets. Probably only KH's is bigger.
