Good thing I banked my contest funds today. Soon we will see Halo 3 plaster Super Mario Sunshine. I'm looking forward to that match because a lot of people regrettably took Super Mario Sunshine to go far.

Yes, but LttP would probably be a favorite to win this contest if it were in it, and FFX didn't lose to it by much!

And the fact that FFVII/OoT didn't change much at all when those two were removed seems to indicate that it was an accurate result!

I have no idea how Metroid: Other M got any scores lower than 60%.

I'm conflicted about Mother 3/DMC 3.

On one hand, I want to vote Mother 3 because I genuinely enjoyed playing it. I never played DMC3, and while I thought Earthbound was the best of the trilogy, Mother 3 has its moments, including one of the best and unique final boss fights of any game.

On the other hand, this will likely be Blowout of the Contest, and I'm all for creating a bigger blowout if at all possible.

I think I'll wait to see the poll in action. If Mother 3 somehow breaks 10%, then I'll vote for it. If this becomes another LoZ/Adventure affair, welp, sorry Mother 3!

Seeing SA2 lose here reminds me of something I've kinda thought about for awhile: how much of a fanbase does Sonic really have left here? I mean, the character's clearly strong (though not like it used to be), but the games aren't much at all here. He's a legend for his Genesis-days, yet not only are none of his Genesis-games strong, but the strongest one here is Sonic 1...which rubs me completely wrong and makes me think there haven't been that many people who played the Sonic-classics anymore. Sonic 2 was the Genesis pack-in that really put Sega on the map while Sonic 3 and S&K were also big hits that were very well received...yet the mediocre original that came before the Genesis was huge -- heck, before the trademark spin-dash was implemented -- is top dog? I don't think I ever heard anybody seriously talk about Sonic 1 as the best Sonic-game. It's not like Sonic 1 out-nominated Sonic 2 in 2004, either, and I don't know if there were any other examples of a stronger game from a series being snubbed for a weaker game (within their eras, anyway).

Today's a good example that Sonic's games since the Dreamcast have not been cared for, and surely we can go a little further back to get the Saturn in this too. Sonic's not had a game GameFAQs cares about since S&K then, which recently turned sixteen years old. Genesis isn't that strong here, anyway. Given how nothing else from 1994 that wasn't Nintendo or Square back in BGE2 held up well, I don't see Sonic being an exception to the old age...

...I kinda feel people's arguments for FF being indirectly stronger than FF2/4 now, but at least people still care about FF.


I know we've known Sonic's running off his reputation now for awhile, but I guess I'm just starting to realize how bad it may be...and if it's as bad as I suspect, then Sonic better get his 3D ass in gear because this is three generations of him either not being meaningful at all, being looked down upon for not keeping up in 3D, or just being flat-out bad. He's been becoming part of the Nintendo-family for two of those generations, which -- while I've never liked how you guys often talk about Nintendo-SFF affecting his older games -- Sonic will let this eventually creep up on him too much as a character. He's already lost to Kirby once fair and square (no matter if he avenged himself one-on-one or not -- Kirby still broke 45% there), and he's not getting any stronger.

What's the word on Sonic 4 -- how's it been received? This feels like the only thing people could get behind to keep Sonic alive lately.

I would argue that KH and Diablo don't overlap with FFX all that much. KH may sap FFX a bit (being made by the same developer), but ultimately you're talking about an ARPG versus a turn-based RPG. And all Diablo has in common is that it's an RPG, but being on the PC and being pretty much a huge dungeon crawl, I don't think they would really overlap all that much.

True, but I think downloadable games are becoming bigger too and are a bigger part of the gaming culture than they were two years ago. Dunno if that'll pay off for Sonic or Sonic 4, but I think the potential for downloadable games to affect characters are bigger now.

Yep, FFX is 49+% on SSBM judging from MGS2 (forget the exact number). That said, even if Diablo 2 is an action-RPG mainly on PC, it's still three RPGs that require a lot of gamer-time to play against a short-session Nintendo fighter. Diablo 2 probably doesn't matter much, but it's worth a mention when discussing that match.

I didn't say it wouldn't be close. FFX and SSB are about as far apart fanbase-wise as you can be. Nintendo vs Sony, fighting/party game vs RPG. So there's no SFF to worry about. And it's been shown that both games have extremely high showings.

I just happen to think the numbers favor SSB, especially since it'll get extra votes from the Pokemon and Zelda fanbases.

I love SF4 (son), but this match feels like "Do you or do you not like 3D Sonic?"

Analysis

There’s no question that this match has been getting a lot of hype. We have a game from one of the most hated series going up against the black sheep of “it’s freaking Mario.” While a lot of people want this to at least be a close match I see this being a comfortable win for one game.

A lot of Super Mario Sunshine supporters are using “it’s freaking Mario” as their argument for why the game will win, but if it’s freaking Mario worked then Super Mario Galaxy wouldn’t have lost to Call of Duty 4. Sure we can move into the context that this is a Halo game, but Super Mario Sunshine isn’t exactly the most loved Mario game either.

Going back to Super Mario Galaxy the game’s performance was so bad that it would probably struggle to defeat Halo 3 and as many people know Galaxy is on a much higher tier than Sunshine among Mario fans. The only way you could argue that Sunshine is close to Galaxy is if Galaxy suffers from Wii hate, but four-ways dilutes anti-votes. I think people no longer care much about new Mario, mostly because of the way Sunshine was handled.

This is one of those matches where almost all the evidence points to one entrant yet the other gets decent support because to the board it just feels right. Unlike other matches the board’s gut feeling is more fear than anything else. The board has been burned by Halo and GTA too many times and you can see the caution in their bracket predictions. Eventually they get an opponent weak enough that they get burned for picking against it. I feel this match will be the one doing that even though this will be a night match.

There is no such thing as an even 50/50 split. A game will hurt one game more than it will hurt another even if it's only marginal. Diablo was a summon in Final Fantasy VIII, therefore there is plenty of reason to believe it would overlap with FFX
