I've made brackets with my gut before. They all sucked because my gut pretty much always lies to me, with rare exceptions (WCC).

This year, I used actual stats to help me. I still made a few gut picks (WW winning its division), but at least I made sure the stats supported such upsets.

Still, I'm 3/5 so I shouldn't really be saying anything.

I think gaming magazines, web sites, etc., only make this contests to test potential market information, they ask you, you answer, they sell that information to games companies, and voila, Gamefaqs is free, and they can profit, then you will see old games re-printed accordingly to fans reactions. Also these companies adcquire sponsors based in the false/real daily visit numbers or in the magazines case, with magazine sells.

Analysis

The Sonic/Street Fighter tradition continues, lucky for Street Fighter this is probably its best chance at winning, but even then a lot of people are pulling for Sonic Adventure 2. Out of all the first round matches this is the one I have no idea who will win so I’m just going to write a bunch of stuff and you can decide.

Sonic Adventure 2 holds a special place in the hearts of Sonic fans because it is widely accepted as the last good Sonic game. While not everyone may agree to the people who never played the game, but use to like Sonic and don’t now will vote for it just because the game carries that title. The game was also significant in that it was the first Sonic game released on a Nintendo console when the Dreamcast died.

One of the major negative points against Street Fighter IV was its performance in the previous contest where it barely defeated Persona 4. You could argue that Street Fighter IV was in the awkward stage of being past the hype from the initial release, but at the same time not having a large enough fanbase to keep it standing on its two feet. Then again its performance in the GotY poll didn’t exactly make it look any better, but now that I think about it I feel that Persona 4 would have done worse in that GotY poll. Also it’s entirely possible for Sonic Adventure 2 to have performed just as badly or worse. Another bonus for Street Fighter IV is that Super Street Fighter IV was just released which might help it get the nudge it needs to win.

I went with Sonic Adventure 2 because I liked the game better, but really this match is a toss-up and it’s a shame that Halo 3/SMS stole a lot of hype this match would have gotten. The contest has gotten to a great start with already brackets crashing and burning. Oddly enough this is the first match where both entrants are Japanese made, pretty weird considering GameFAQs loves its Japanese companies.

I'm not too sure about that. The ASV might help Halo winning even bigger against Ninja Gaiden. But I think Mario games have a better ASV

Oh yeah, I think I remember having problems with the site as well right around that time.

I remember a few weeks ago when the site was down for almost an hour (well, not quite). I think the poll only got about 50 votes total during the downtime, so some people managed to vote in the poll after multiple attempts to do so.

The ASV helps Halo b/c it's the most American-dominated part of the poll. I'm not sure that the age of the voters is as helpful. That's just what we thought before Geolocation came along.

I can't speak for others, but... this is how I looked at it.

Dragon Age Origins
* Made by popular dev, BioWare.
* Is an RPG, albeit a western one.
* Is very relevant today, with expansions, DLC, and a forthcoming sequel hitting next year.
* Was released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

F-Zero GX
* One of the lesser Nintendo franchises, developed by a division of Sega.
* Is a racing game that is not 1. a classic or 2. Mario Kart.
* There has not been a new F-Zero for nearly six years.
* Was released for the GameCube.

Obviously it doesn't boil down to a simple list of facts, but taking those into account, I picked Dragon Age Origins. Doesn't matter too much since the winner is going to get stomped by Twilight Princess in the second round.

New Orleans Saints (4-2) Week 7: vs Browns

Galaxy's day vote was pretty average in its two matches last contest. Pretty sure they were both weekend matches. It was up against some strong day vote games, but it plummeted pretty badly. Only looked slightly more day oriented than GTA4.

So I'd expect Sunshine to be significantly better in a night matchup against Halo.

F-Zero GX is gonna be killed, and DA:O probably isn't any stronger than Uncharted 2 or B:AA. It's hard as hell, sold piss-poorly, and it's not like Captain Falcon gets much of his popularity from that series.
