I don't know about anybody else, but a round 2 loss for me is extremely disheartening. I know "it's only 1 point," but it doesn't make me feel any less FAIL for missing a round 2 pick.

I'm starting to seriously reconsider a couple of my other brackets, mostly WC3>Morrowind.

it's a good match, predictable trends yet a close outcome, lots of brackets fall, just fun to watch, and RB2 is one of my faves. this is the type of match that makes me happy for the contest!

Analysis

First match where both contestants have very little information about them, but unlike future matches where we have the same thing there is very little question on to which game will win. Even the people who think Batman will flop in this contest have to agree that the game is going to win fairly easily in this match.

Psychonauts is one of those games with a small hardcore fanbase that is able to get it in the contest, but once the game is open up to the voters it gets massacred. Looking at the first match the vote totals were terrible some people have begun to think that cult games may get an advantage and perform better. I disagree with that idea because the reduction of people coming to the site probably comes from all spectrums and while it is possible that we’ll see a shift to somewhere it is impossible to predict which direction the shift will go. Also while we did get low vote totals in the first match it could be because Fallout 3 is a bad vote draw and even if it wasn’t the average two competitors in four-ways after 12 hours had much less vote totals and we didn’t see cult entrants perform that well there.

I’m one of those people that think Batman isn’t as strong as what the board thinks. The main reason is that as gamers we are taught to avoid games with characters that are famous from other medium and while Arkham Asylum was able to buck the trend some people may have avoided the game. Whether or not that is true won’t matter in this match, but Batman could struggle next round and it probably won’t come close to beating Fallout 3 that a small group of people have been hyping.

I don’t think much of Psychonauts and it is possible that the game is one of the weakest in the bracket. Batman shouldn’t have much trouble breaking 70% here, but if it does we could have an interesting match next round should the winner impress.

This is an excellent point and I agree. I don't think "cult" games necessarily benefit because the cult gamer voting will be lowered as well. The main thing that lower vote totals benefit is rallies/stuffing. That itself might favor cult stuff, but that's not certain either - the biggest ralliers of all are mainstream stuff like Mario and Pokemon and Smash.

Another excellent point that I totally agree with. I was pretty surprised that Batman had such high expectations, because I have that standard gamer bias of licensed games not being as respected. I think Batman won't get enough "respect" votes to compete with Fallout, at all.

The result here doesn't surprise me, if not for board expectations I would've gone with Deus Ex here because of the "it's a *real* game" factor. Again I think "respect" matters, I doubt most voters have played either game.

I am quite surprised though that Rock Band has the better night vote. Figured it to be more of a day game than Deus Ex.

Rock Band doing terrible in Europe is the combination of Deus Ex being more popular in Europe than in North America, plus Rock Band being unpopular in Europe. European voting is almost dead by this point in the match. I posted a trend chart for a continent poll in the previous stats topic. The continent poll was from 6/27/2009, which was during the summer and also a weekend poll.
