People would've rallied the Chief if not for him. GAME FUEL the ultimate joke vote.

But seriously, it is a bit sad that a general gaming forum knows so little about Deus Ex. I can understand not playing it, but calling one of the most important PC games of all time cult or not even knowing what it is just shows how console-orientated GameFAQs is.

I played and beat Deus Ex. Despite that, I still voted Rock Band 2 just because it's an awesome multiplayer game. I enjoyed Deus Ex and don't mind it winning, though, so either one winning is fine with me.

Gotta say that it's funny to already have a surprise win so far. Let me just show you its results in the Odds to Win topic:

From: Not_Wylvane | #002
Probability that Rock Band 2 will beat Deus Ex:

Count: 25
Average: 83.81%
Mode: 95
Minimum: 60
Median: 85
Maximum: 100

So yeah, maybe this project isn't the most accurate. Or maybe it's that 16% kicking in. Oh well.

I'm sure Deus Ex is also a really good game, it's about time some PC classics not made by Blizzard gets some attention here!

It's a tough call. Do you want a guaranteed 600 points or a shot at 2100 points (assuming you bank on Halo 3/Sunshine, which you probably want to do if you have a solid amount of points accumulated). You need big chains to win, but you don't want to blow it all, either.

I'd probably risk it and not bank on that match, just because you need large chains to win. Banking at 600 points over and over will not win you the contest.

Over in the Battle Challenge Technical Analysis topic, we found that the math seems to encourage long streaks. It's hard to say, but streaks of 15-20 or so are probably what one should be going for to try for victory.

15-20?! pretty much every division has a questionable match in it.Gonna take some balls goin on a streak that long.

You can play small ball right now to feel things out, but there's no doubt that someone is gonna hit a streak of 30+ matches eventually. Calling an incredible 60 in a row will get you nearly 200,000 points, so banking 100-300 seems really really silly at any time.

Yeah, but 1 streak of 15 is the worth the same number of points as 20 separate streaks of 3. I think the banking decision depends very much on how you feel about the upcoming matches. If the next few matches are obvious, then you have much more to gain by taking a risk (since you can earn more on them by not banking). If you're doubtful of them, it may be better to bank.

transients | Posted 10/20/2010 2:48:16 PM | message detail
the key to the battle challenge, I think, is to get a nice amount of points in round 1 and then play it safe the rest of the way. if someone goes on a 15-20 match streak in r1, they'll be set for round 2 because those matches are a hell of a lot easier after seeing results.

At least now we can write off music games as getting anti-votes more than anything. Guitar Hero was expected given how over-exposed and Kotick'd the series has become. Rock Band actually has some support given how well-liked Harmonix is as a developer and how forward-thinking the RB series has become.

And as far as streaks go, my longest streak in a (bracket) contest was 30 in 2004. I got 20 in 2005 (before losing that one to Knuckles/Magus), and unfortunately haven't gone any higher than 11 since then.

By the way, if someone manages to bank a streak of 30, they earn 46,500 points for that. If you bank streaks of 6 all contest-long, and never get a match wrong, you get 44,200 points and still lose to that.
