~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Analysis

You have one game suffering from I like you, but I don’t love you against a game that is not very well known on the console dominant GameFAQs. Had this been on a PC site Deus Ex probably takes it rather easily, but this isn’t the case. Too bad we’re likely to get a repeat of 2004 and 2009 and have the few Deus Ex fans come over and whine for the entire match, good thing the match only lasts for 12 hours.

One thing that I am interested in is how strong Rock Band 2 can be as the game has a large range. While it’s unlikely that it’ll pose a threat to Fallout 3 in the next round I do feel that once the contest is done Rock Band 2 will finish with a respectable performance overall. Unlike other things like Pac-Man or Peach that run pretty much only on apathy there are a few hardcore Rock Band 2 fans in the real world. The main problem is Rock Band 2 isn’t the type of game that people would come to GameFAQs and read a FAQ about so it has to rely on whether or not Rock Band 2 fans are more gamers than casual players.

Taking a quick look at the Oracle and I see a lot of people expecting Rock Band 2 to fail to break 60% in the match and many others only having it in the low 60s. While apathy ran entrants tend to struggle to score a decent percent you also have to look at the opponent. Deus Ex was terrible in the last contest and I see no reason to expect it to be any different, not that Rock Band 2 is going to be anything special either. Even Pac-Man was able to break 70% against the right opponent. 70% may be a bit much here, but the game should easily be around the mid to high 60s.

These vote totals being bad isn't some huge surprise. Fallout 3 has never brought in the votes (its matches last year at the bottom of the bracket were some of the most boring all contest), and it's up against inFamous. inFamous is a dime-z-dozen sandbox game in a very cluttered genre, and I'd go as far to say the current sandbox genre is as crowded as platformers in the 1990s.

Now for those saying this bodes badly for other PS3 games like Uncharted 2 or Demon's Souls, two words: effin relax. This only means people don't care about sandbox games, and it really only bodes badly for that genre. One match is not a pattern, and Fallout 3 is still going to the semis with no resistance.
