truly do wonder which game the site will choose myself; however, for
some reason, the only people I can see choosing Melee are people who
prefer its tourney play. I can't think for much of a reason on why
anybody else would choose Melee over Brawl.. at least outside of that
reason alone. Would it be the characters that didn't make it? --- *is Dranze* Dr. Football swept me. |

Really
though, if that poll's ran, the main thing I care about is how SSBB
does against KH/FF9 and try to see how it compares to what SSBM got on
FFX/KH last year. Glimpses of HL2/ME/Oblivion will be nice, too, but I

know, I honestly am not feeling great about Half-Life 2's strength. I
mean, it doesn't have a very tough path to tread up to Prime, but what

Melee
gets half the votes from people who don't really care about competitive
play, and 80%+ of the votes from those who do. And by competitive, I
mean that they enjoy a game of skill, not that they actually need to

imagine the number of people who hack SSBB isn't much bigger than the
number of people still playing SSBM for tournies...and I'd bet on most

Nothing
arbitrary about half. It's what you'd think would be the case if Melee
and Brawl were equally strong, and past results point to them being
about equal. 80%? Who knows how much it is, but it's going to be way

red sox, the casuals are the ones who don't care about gameplay. The
casuals are the ones who like having more characters, more features,
etc. Basically your 50-50 split requires a lot of your casuals to be semi-hardcore which should be represented in your other stat, thus pushing the casuals for Brawl well over Melee. --- ~Acting on Impulse~ |

it's not like more features and characters really matters- TP is newer
and shinier than OOT too, but it would get crushed. FFX's graphics put
FFVII to shame, but it did get crushed. People expect a sequel to have

Casuals absolutely prefer Brawl to Melee, I can assure you. a purely casual standpoint, Brawl beats it in every way.... More
characters, more music, more stages, more single player content, etc.
I'm what you'd call a casual, and I never noticed any of the balancing
issues and all that people always gush over Melee for, and I vastly

you are arguing with games that are completely different. TP and OoT
have different gameplay and stories, FFX and FFVII have different

both completely different. Who gives a damn about story in Smash Bros.
The core of Smash Bros is the gameplay and the features surrounding the
gameplay. I didn't say anything about story.......and I don't think that's why OOT and FFVII are so much stronger than TP and FFX either. The question is: do Brawl's extra features actually make the game better? Actually, it's 7 years newer so most people expect something more than slightly better too to be satisfied. If casuals prefer Brawl, I doubt they'd go for it with any more than 55%. Melee will put up massive margins among anyone who enjoys the game as a fighter. Remember that you can't just compare the total size of those groups- people who like Smash more are way more likely to vote. Brawl could easily win- but the idea that Brawl will win massive support among casuals because it has slightly more in features and characters- no. Pretty much all sequels have at least viscerally more in features- it doesn't make them better games, and it doesn't make them more popular games, unless the features actually improve the game significantly. --- Crono > Sephiroth. 7 years of waiting, and perhaps many more to go.
