So what do you guys think about Arkham Asylum being this contest's Charizard? I'll keep in mind that so many of you crapped on my Charizard pick until he Flare Blitz'd your heads in. Know that Batman is at least 30x more dangerous than Charizard. =) --- http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae229/yungflyerz/67106910.jpg |

Valkyria
never really seemed obscure to me, but i picked Disgaea anyway. though
i'm not really sure why. i should probably change that. Valkyria Chronicles will be pretty weak, based on these polls: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3353 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3360 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3476 Valkyria Chronicles got 24.48% on LBP in the first poll and 19.37% on it in the second poll. Valkyria also got 11.29% on MGS4 in the second poll. LBP got 28.20% on MGS4 in the PS3 GotY and in a contest match, it got 21.03% on MGS4. As for Disgaea: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3469 Disgaea got 23.75% on Melee directly. Considering MGS4's strength is very close to Melee and Valkyria got 11.29% on MGS4, this gives me confidence in Disgaea > Valkyria. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as Dr_Football, Guru Champ! |

Bringing
up old results for PS3 games is dangerous. The PS3 is much more popular
than it used to be. Valkyria Chronicles has gottne popular due to word
of mouth and even came out with a sequel (yeah it's on the PSP,
whatever). Disgaea is likely the safer pick. I went with Valkyria
because of the PS3 popularity and a better seed. Really, the match
should be close either way. I wouldn't expect either game to break 55%
or much more than that. --- GameFAQs isn't going to be merged in with GameSpot or any other site. We're not going to strip out the soul of the site. -CJayC |

MarioSuperstar | Posted 10/8/2010 5:40:06 AM | message detail |
As
far as the general wrestling game goes (after just searching "WW"), at
least as a genre, it really is comparable to Madden (maybe even a
weaker one). I don't know if the most popular wrestling game (is it?) could land, however. --- *is Dranze* |

I'm all done except for Metroid Prime vs Half-Life 2 Well MP got the same on KH as HL2 got on TP so I guess it all depends on how much Paper Mario held Metroid Prime back. --- BOP Topic: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/56645390 BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls |

I
also suppose it depends on how we think Twilight Princess vs. Kingdom
Hearts goes (which ironically is basically guaranteed in the
bracket)...that should be a win for the Zelda game right? That also
basically decides how Brawl vs. Melee goes, eeps. Right now I'm picking Half-Life 2 out of sheer favoritism. It won Crispy Gamer's Game of the Decade contest when it only had a 3 seed, so surely it can do well here when it has a 2 seed, right? BTW Metroid Prime is the only 1 seed common to both the Crispy Gamer and GameFAQs versions of the Game of the Decade contest, which is funny seeing how it's likely the weakest on both counts. In their contest Fallout 3 was a 6 seed (which almost beat Half-Life 2 in round 2), Melee was an 8 (but got to the final four and was caught cheating against Half-Life 2), Resident Evil 4 was a 4 (lost to GTAIII in round 2...not going to happen here), and Majora's Mask, Final Fantasy X, and Metal Gear Solid 3 were all absent there (since the contest only had 1 game per series, so Wind Waker, FFXII, and MGS2 were the respective reps...and they all lost in the first round). Speaking of which, I just realized that Twilight Princess is the lowest-seeded Zelda game in the contest. Huh? --- I have no idea how Metroid: Other M got any scores lower than 60%. |
Haste_2 | Posted 10/8/2010 6:25:52 AM | message detail |
MP
did a few points worse than HL2 against the winning opponents of their
Round 1 matches, which is one reason why I have HL2 in my bracket.
Plus, Zelda:TP is stronger than KH, I think. The match will take place
in the day.... true, HL2 is not a game that gets votes in the day, but
MP isn't much better with that. I think both have a pretty good shot. GTAIV vs. RSE, anyone? I picked RSE without hesitation, but I just realized GTA4 vs. DPP might be close looking at the stats of early 2009... True, GTA4 may have weakened by now (but maybe not) and RSE has a day match... --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think." |
LinkMarioSamus | Posted 10/8/2010 6:37:32 AM | message detail |
Isn't
Pokemon RSE usually seen as the weak point of the series? Plus Super
Mario Galaxy shouldn't do so well on GTAIV and it might even lose (heck
the two faced off last year and look who came out on top, though I can
understand why SMG is the consensus pick seeing as how Niko seemed to
fall off the map last contest and SMG was basically facing its worst
opponent), but we know that Galaxy would do well on Pokemon DPP, and I
have a hard time believing in RSE > DPP. Speaking of which, this darn Pokecraze is just too much here. I'm voting for GSC until it hits Majora's Mask, which it should not defeat quite frankly (I'm fine with GSC beating Wind Waker and MGS3/4 though), and I'm not voting for DPP or RSE at all. Really sad to see DPP get matched up with one of the best handheld experiences I've ever played, but I don't really mind. --- I have no idea how Metroid: Other M got any scores lower than 60%. |
WhiteLens | Posted 10/8/2010 6:38:22 AM | message detail |
I just picked R/S/E because of its strong Pokemon-label. Even if it is possibly the weakest generation, I'd imagine that with it being 1v1, all the Nintendo fans will focus on it. --- No need for words, Just cast Luminaire and be done with it. |
Not_Wylvane | Posted 10/8/2010 7:04:13 AM | message detail |
From: Haste_2 | #410 That's a good point. As weak as GTA4 is, we may be underestimating it because it's against POKEMON. Nevermind that it'll be against the arguably weakest member of the main series and probably would do on an un-SFF'd Galaxy what DP did on it. Then again, it's really hard to pick a GTA game over a Pokemon game to begin with. You have one series fond of losing matches it's supposed to win, and another series fond of winning matches it's supposed to lose. Hell, I'm too scared to even consider it even if the stats say it's feasible. --- Wylvane Calvinball is a horrible user. |
MarioSuperstar | Posted 10/8/2010 7:45:12 AM | message detail |
GTAIV
surprisingly didn't really drop all that much from the 2008
Multi-platform poll. In fact, you probably could make a case that it
gained. It was close to both Fallout 3 and CoD4; it may could even beat
Galaxy if you buy into another Wii dropping. Trusting GTA games is kinda lame, but last contest only San Andreas really bombed. --- *is Dranze* Dr. Football swept me. |

I've
been mulling over it, too. TP getting a bit of strength from a lack of
OoT wouldn't be too surprising, and it's kinda close to Brawl to begin
with if the last contest can be believed. I'm not going to take it, but I wouldn't be shocked to see TP win against Smash either. Don't think it's likely enough for me to take a risk there, though. --- Wylvane CombuskenEngine is a horrible user. |
HaRRicH | Posted 10/8/2010 10:52:52 AM | message detail |
It's
not my kind of risk, though I can see it happening. It's just that we
haven't seen it happen yet under two different circumstances
(GotD-poll, BGE2). While one-on-one is different from four-ways and
ten-way polls, we still don't have much reason to believe SSBB isn't
the #1 Wii-game...and if SSBM beats it, that's all the stronger LoZ:TP
has to be to compete. It seems more like you'd have to rely on the
LoZ-name covering the rest of the gap, and that probably won't work
since those two SSB-games are so huge. --- Where's your horse? http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg |

yeah, if people voted just based on franchise names, wouldn't most games in a series be closer in strength? From: transience | #392 I can guarantee there are more people on this site who buy Madden games than wrestling games. It's just that there's no single Madden game to rally behind as the greatest. And the type of people who buy Madden games aren't as inclined to fill out a nomination form (not to mention No Mercy had the great benefit of the Guru nominations). Anyway, as for you pointing out No Mercy having fans even on this board.. FE9 finished well ahead of No Mercy in TimJab's contest this year. I know that's really not the greatest of points to bring up concerning the contest for all of GameFAQs, but it is another plus and I feel most of GameFAQs WILL follow that trend. They've all played Melee and Brawl and it's no secret that Ike, Marth and Roy are all popular characters in the games and they performed decently in the last character battle. Yes I know characters=/= games but the voters are certainly AWARE of Fire Emblem and I just feel like most voters will go with the RPG Nintendo option purely because they don't give two ****s about wrestling or they think wrestling is a joke. I do admit the match is up in the air. Just saying my gut feeling is Fire Emblem for these reasons. From: UltimaterializerX | #441 I think WWF is going to be more categorized by gamers as a fighter than a sports game in the same way that gamers probably associate UFC-games as fighter-games instead of sports-games...and the difference is, of course, that professional wrestling isn't really a sport. That may be what gets it some hate, but it's hard to immediately associate the game as sports instead of fighting. This is also going to be a lame argument, but to try showing WWF No Mercy has its fans, I'm trying to dig around in a few different areas to show its reception: 1) http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?search=WWF&numrev=3&site= http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=0&year=0&numrev=3&sort=0&letter=&search=WCW http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=0&year=0&numrev=3&sort=0&letter=&search=WWE From these three searches, it's the third highest-rated wrestling game to date...I can't say anything about the WWF Smackdown or WWE Smackdown games, but I do know I haven't heard of them in any discussion of classic wrestling games because... 2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWF_No_Mercy#Reception WWF No Mercy is considered by many to be one of the best wrestling games ever made. 3) http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/914112-wwf-no-mercy http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/199349-wwf-smackdown http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/589727-wwe-smackdown-here-comes-the-pain WWF No Mercy was better received here than the other two wrestling games that beat it review-wise, plus it was better-received than FE:PoR (though it has two/four times as many reviews/ratings...surely due to some degree by being newer, but nonetheless). 4) http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/259-pro-wrestling-social/56681227 I just made the topic so I don't know how it's going to turn out, but I expect strong support for WWF No Mercy. It'll be fun to see if it turns out right or wrong. Yeah,
I think we can say that wrestling games in this contest should not be
compared to, say, Madden. There was a huge cult of wrestling game fans
back in No Mercy's day. But ever since THQ decided to make SVR their
lone wrestling series (and WWE's decline into PG territory) there has
been a huge drop-off in that niche. Hell, there was a fanbase for the Def Jam series simply because AKI was making them with a fighting/wrestling focus in mind. --- Don't tell me what I can't do! - John Locke |
