They got corrupted in a database crash or something. But he had backup copies of everything so nothing will be lost; it's just going to take a little while to restore all that data.

GOG rereleases old games so that they can play on modern machines with no DRM. it's popular amongst the right crowd, but yeah, this isn't anything on the level of Steam.

That was BG1 on GOG, not 2. Two weeks ago.

Yeah, I didn't think so. I'll stick with SOA, though I won't be surprised if BG2 wins. If it was on Steam, this would have been an easy match.

How much does the box art and name value come into play in these contests? I'm stuck on the Mega Man/Demon Souls match, and I think those 2 factors are what will determine it. I know Demon Souls sold well, but I'm not sure how popular a ps3 exclusive would be here. Mega Man has that terrible box art though...

It's a PS3 exclusive vs. a downloadable game.

The only thing that gives people pause is the fact that it's a Mega Man game.

They still exist on the site. There is a weird problem with the site which causes none of the matches from last contest to show up on this page:

The only way to view the updates is to know the exact URL to each match. For example, here is the final match of the last contest:

http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/22?matchnum=3856&num=2

If you want to view other matches, you will have to change the "3856" to the poll number of any match you want to check out.

Eh, I don't trust GOTY polls when it comes to downloadable games. They're essentially like handhelds -- no amount of sales, or praise, will ever be enough to make them top real console games. That doesn't mean people won't vote for them 1v1 against a niche console game. Like Braid has been abysmal in every poll its been in, but it'll keep it close with Persona 4. It won't win, or ever put the heat on, but it'll be decent.

But the fact that MM9 is like a handheld game, only worse, is what gives me pause.

I'd be shocked if Persona did more than 55%. There is a large chunk of this site who haven't played the game, and even more who that game doesn't appeal to. I think people are a little too hooked on that SF4 match. If you ran SF4 vs. P4 1v1 I don't even have to debate who wins.

Demon's Souls seems pretty reasonable there. Admittedly it's kinda hard to tell with Uncharted 2 sucking up so much of the vote, but it was still considered the 2nd best PS3 exclusive of last year. Doubt Valkyria Chronicles would've got half that, as much as I love it.

The same does go for Braid, but it is a much more appealing choice to a lot of people. Again, I'm not saying it's going to win, but Braid won't get beat down. It's available to pretty much everyone, too -- XBLA / PSN / PC. I think Braid can hold 45%, definitely.

And the real point I'm making here is that downloadable games 1v1 against niche RPGs aren't a lost cause. I don't think multi-option polls with enormously popular console games do them justice. I don't think any of them will be particularly strong, but it's worth having the discussion for the Braids and MM9s.

Braid is a much less appealing choice than Persona. one of a JRPG, one is a downloadable puzzle platformer. that is super easy to pick for me.

yeah, that's more debatable. people actually cared about Mega Man 9, it was big news when it came out. I am the only person on this board who was talking about Braid before it came out. MM9 is much more popular than Braid. (Demon's Souls is probably more popular than Persona 4, too)

Demon's Souls/MM9 isn't really debatable to me anymore. The more I look at it, the worse MM9 looks. Demon's Souls could score a doubling there and I wouldn't be surprised. Same with Braid.

Demon's Souls has sold over 750k worldwide. 400k+ of that is from the US. It came out in Europe for the first time a month ago and sold 200k there (and those GotY poll took place before it did). It probably sold a lot more than MM9.
