I'm going Brawl > Melee just because Brawl's more recent. Of course, there's been some backlash against it after the initial release hype died down, and it's definitely not as powerful as it would be if this thing was held in 2008 or so. It could really go either way so I just picked one and decided to leave it at that.

MGS made a lead of 5057 in the first 12 hours against GSC and finished with a lead of 5797. GSC cut 660 votes off MGS's lead with the ASV. I think GSC can take MGS4 in a day match.

First off: this is the weirdest lineup of one-seeds since 2002. Seriously, I was gobsmacked when I saw Majora's Mask get a one-seed! Holy crap. :O

Will Arnett and Keri Russell in the same show - how can you top that?!?

On my first runthrough I ended up with the divisions finishing like so:

Fallout 3 > Uncharted 2 (Need to check some history to get a feel for SMS/Halo 3/UC2)
Half-Life 2 > Metroid Prime (I feel like MP might struggle to get past DMC3 and Okami)
Melee > Brawl (I figure Brawl's more likely to have weakened than Melee, and Melee might've been stronger than Brawl anyway)
Twilight Princess > Kingdom Hearts II (No idea whether KHII is stronger than KH1, but TP's a lock)
Final Fantasy X > Final Fantasy IX (Seems easy enough, only KOTOR could theoretically upset this)
Resident Evil 4 > Final Fantasy XII (I think people will pick Portal en masse against FFXII, and I think they'll get stung)
Metal Gear Solid 3 > Metal Gear Solid 4 (Straight up heads or tails, and I'm going for the game on the more popular console)
Pokemon GSC > Zelda: Wind Waker (Time for Pokemon to establish itself as the non-OoT Zelda-killer!)

For the first one, we've got one of the most hated series here represented twice with near-equal games, the most hated mainline-Mario game, and Hayabusa's main game (who cleanly upset MC last contest). I hate to ever bank on Halo, but I'm taking Halo > Halo 3 for now; SMS lost to Animal Crossing back in the day, NG wasn't very impressive in the vote-ins, and the original Halo should get the love in their SFF-battle if voters go by respect/importance instead of recency.

The second four-pack has a game with a reason to boost since BGE2 and a sequel on the way, the winner of a vote-in, and a battle between possibly the most hated console FF-game and the most enjoyed handheld FF-game. Zack crushes every character from FF12 and "FF7" is in the title, but it's hard to trust a PSP-exclusive very much. Gears 2 should do well, though I don't think it will be in THAT much of contention with Portal since its vote-in had The Sims look pretty swell. Should Portal advance and face FF12, it has to count on being just about as strong as HL2 or stronger...and if CC:FF7 advances, well, it'll need to be that much stronger. Given all the free Portal-games given away earlier this year and the upcoming hype for Portal 2, it's in a decent position...but it's also a night-match; I don't remember how Portal does at night off-hand, but that's Square-time for FF-games. I've currently got Portal > CC:FF7, but I'll probably flip-flop for awhile here.

I've been thinking about taking GSC > FFX, so I don't disagree with this at all. I've also currently got MGS3 > MGS4, though that's probably bias speaking.

Aw yeah, Fallout 3 starting off the contest. I think it could win its division easily, especially with New Vegas backing it. Batman and Uncharted 2 will be interesting, but I don't really see either being that impressive in the face of Fallout 3. Hilariously, I had Sunshine over Uncharted 2 after first making the bracket, changing that **** now. I'll probably change that soon, though I think I'll still keep Sunshine over the Halo's. Sunshine/Halo 3 and winner of that vs Halo 1 will be nice. It'll be the first match I bank at. I think TF2/Fable also has potential for an upset, since Fable has a bit of strength to it.

Division Finals: Fallout 3 > Uncharted 2

Northeast Division

Demon's Souls vs Mega Man 9 is an interesting match. I have MM9, but I can see DS being the favorite here. I have GTA3 over HL2, and ToS making it to the division finals. I think GTA3/HL2 is the only match I'm really worried about, as I think ToS could take either. Either way, Metroid Prime walks to the Elite 8 with ease.

Division Final: Metroid Prime > Tales of Symphonia

East Division

Aw yeah, Melee vs Brawl. As for the rest, I think Morrowind could fight off the rabid Warcraft base, Disgaea is more established here than VC and will take the win, and I think WWF can reach a broad enough audience to take it over the FE game, though that one's a toughie. Rounds 2 and 3 will be ridiculously easy, and for the final I went with Brawl, as I do believe it's the stronger of the two games. I'll definitely bank my points before that one, though.

Division Final: Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Super Smash Bros. Melee

Southeast Division

TP a 4 seed? At any rate, it should have no problem winning the division. A shame Galaxy won't get tested, as it has two easy wins and then bows out to TP. The bottom half of the division is far more interesting, as MW2 is a nice wildcard to the KH1/2 cluster****. Chose MW2 initially, but I think I'll switch to KH2.

Division Final: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess > Kingdom Hearts II

South Division

A few interesting matches. ToV could eke out a win against Borderlands, though I'm backing the latter. R&C shouldn't have too much trouble with Golden Sun, but that game may be stronger than we think. Could Tony Hawk 2 manage to upset Fire Emblem? I could see Civ 4 upsetting Persona 3 as well. Especially interesting is KotOR vs DMC, as whoever wins that goes to FF9 and may have a chance at beating it. Speaking of FF9, kind of a shame that it too is wasted against this stuff. People should've nominated FFX-2 so it would've faced FFX and got 90-10'd or worse. Oh well, FF9 should do well regardless, at least until FF10 crushes it.

Division Final: Final Fantasy X > Final Fantasy IX

Southwest Division

TWEWY vs Dead Rising? I'll lean toward Dead Rising, especially with DR2 out now. Still think Persona 4 will edge it out here, though, which makes me surprised that I have a Persona game winning two matches. I've got 12 over CC just because CC is a handheld game, but CC winning wouldn't shock me. Mass Effect should do decent, but I can't see it beating Portal. RE4 will clean up here easily.

Division Final: Resident Evil 4 > Portal

West Division

Aw yeah, potential 15 > 2 upset! I'm picking The Sims here in the battle of critical acclaim vs sales. MvC2/NSMBW may be interesting, but I'm choosing NSMBW. Other than that, I have Paper Mario beating WoW, probably due to fanboyism. At any rate, 4 should have no issues here.

Division Final: Metal Gear Solid 4 > Metal Gear Solid 3

Northwest Division

So this is where GSC is. GSC could do some damage here, as it wasn't quite far away from MM with RBY in the poll. Another potential wildcard is Oblivion, though I think WW is out of its league. Got CC and PW winning their matches, so it comes down to MM, WW, and GSC. Right now, I'll go with WW > MM, but that could easily change. Any one of those three could win.

Division Final: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker > The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Final Rounds

I think Fallout 3 is strong enough to beat Metroid Prime, and the other three quarterfinals are obvious. Brawl crushes FO3, FFX sweeps MGS4, and in the finals I'm backing Super Smash Bros. Brawl to win the whole thing.

Final: Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Final Fantasy X

GSC is the one that's really making me freak out. I think everyone's overrating the hell out of it (no way I'm gonna pick it to beat MGS4, for instance), but MM and WW are the perfect competition for it. And even if GSC bombs, MM vs WW is still a tough match that could go either way.

I love and hate it. All the other tough picks I have some confidence in. I have no confidence in any of the three games in the Northwest Division. Hell, even freaking Oblivion winning it wouldn't shock me.

I wanna talk about each division, because I'm sure there are several places where people will want to laugh at me.

North Division:

I don't see the hype for Fallout 3. There, I said it. I think Batman: Arkham Asylum was both more well received by a large number of people, being both Batman and absolutely amazing, as well as not having a strong contingent saying that it's a bad game because it's not the sequel people wanted. Thus, Batman will triumph, as he is wont to do. I also think, as this is somewhat of a retrospective over the decade, that nostalgia might influence people a bit (a bit a bit not a lot a bit) more than usual. What's more memorable than all those LAN parties that people had for the original Halo? Not an incredible amount, honestly. While people judge based on the fact that Halo went down to Starcraft Round 1 in the OG Game Contest, I think that enough time has passed between then (when people hated the Xbox with a fiery passion) and now (Xbox 360 has a larger install base than the PS3, is loved by millions) and enough good memories made that it'll jump out of nowhere to win the division. Yeah, that's right, I said win the division. People have been wooed by MC's potential, but people have to remember that Halo really shines in the Multiplayer, and that's why people will vote for it. MC is not his game, not by a long shot.

As for some of the smaller matches, the incoming release of RB3 will propel Rock Band 2 over Deus Ex, while the incoming release of Sonic 4 will propel Sonic Adventure 2 over Super Street Fighter 4. Both will promptly lose in the next round. Despite it's strong showing in the vote in, Legend of Dragoon gets trampled by a simply much stronger Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Halo 3 vs. Super Mario Sunshine is the closest match of the division by far, both being underachievers in their respective series', and while I currently have SMS, it may change at least once before the match happens. Also, Team Fortress 2 wins a match.

Division Final: Halo > Batman. Sounds like a 13 year old's wet dream.

Northwest Division:

Metroid Prime is gonna roll here. With Other M out to make it look even better to the fans of the series, it rides up until a hot match with Half-Life 2 that has lots of upset potential. Prime is gonna make it through Star Ocean 3 (laugh), Devil May Cry 3 (much more impressive), and Demon's Souls (which makes it out of it's super easy 4-pack by trampling Okami, which is really a "greater of two cult games" situation, which is what Okami ends up winning in round 1) Tales of Symphonia beats the weaker (sooooooo much weaker) of the two Resident Evil games, which makes people think it can beat Left 4 Dead right up until the match starts and it promptly falls on it's face (much as its characters tended to do, too). Finally, Grand Theft Auto III wins a match, reminds people just how revolutionary and amazing it was, and is forgotten when put up against one of the few games that can make the "revolutionary and awesome" claim better than itself.

Finals: Metroid > HL2. Battle of the First Person Shooter?s.

OK bracket overall. Some stuff that could have been mixed around though. All MGS games in the same division, even though MGS2 isn't gonna go anywhere? Galaxy and Crystal could have been switched as well. At least then the winners of their respective divisions would be in doubt. I suppose Wind Waker could pull off the upset, but hints of 2004 there.

On the good notes:

-Who else has SMS to the division finals?
-I feel wrong taking Golden Sun to beat San Andreas, but if ToS could beat it, who's to say that Golden Sun couldn't?

As I said earlier, keep in mind that it's a day match. GS got 44.34% on MGS during the night and 49.13% during the day. Since then we've has a Pokemon GS remake and Pokemon Black/White came out. Add to that MGS4 being weaker than MGS and GSC has some room to be overrated and still win that match.
