GameFAQs Contests

It's not just Starcraft though, it's nearly his entire half of its division:

Starcraft - blown away by FF8 twice despite Xenogears and FF9 sharing their polls.
Halo - just a little under Diablo 2 while Halo 2's just a little under WoW.
Soul Calibur - originally snubbed before bombing to Starcraft; didn't even beat Xenogears-with-FF8 by very much.
Kingdom Hearts - the exception to my point; the series has grown here so much since 2004.
Metroid Prime - lost to GTA:VC with Paper Mario in the poll.
Half-Life - closer to Chrono Cross than FF9 in a poll they shared.
Skies of Arcadia - did not return for BGE2.
LoZ:WW - 74.71% on SoA, 55.22% on MP, 49.9% on rallied Starcraft.

EVERYTHING in that half-bracket outside of Kingdom Hearts looked bad, which had reason to improve from 2004 and KH2 confirmed it wasn't an accident. LoZ:WW's not the new LoZ-game on the block or a recent GotY-winner anymore, either, so where's its excuse to avoid what six of its seven other games have suffered?

LoZ:TP is definitely stronger, agreed...SSBB still didn't even LFF it in comparison to RE4 unless you think LoZ:TP/RE4's relationship was more accurate during RE4/MGS3 than RE4/KH2. Also agreed that we don't know how strong SSB is and that it's hard to take much from a VC-poll, but LoZ:MM still has that victory to its name and most of us would bet on SSB having fair strength; would you take it over Halo or Starcraft? Agreed AGAIN that the LoZ-series is much more than LoZ:WW and LoZ:MM, but games from weaker series beating and SFF'ing games from bigger series isn't exactly the most common thing...

...and yes, I get the irony of RBY > LoZ:MM and SSBM > LoZ:WW in blow-outs being the crutches of our argument. Still hard to prove your side was SFF'd any more than my side was LFF'd. I just can't trust LoZ:WW after the 2004-to-2009 comparison for almost every other game in its half-bracket.

I trust SSBM to SFF WW pretty hard- I was surprised it didn't get blown out worse. The Gamecube has a small fanbase perfect for big SFF, and SSBM absolutely dwarfs everything else on that console. That said, RBY > SSBM, and N64 LFF should exist too. I don't think we can really get much meaningful stuff out of those polls.

Intuitively, I think MM is more liked by the Zelda fanbase than WW is. WW is the game that doesn't fit in- the cell-shaded, controversial game that got high critical acclaim but never really got past the cell-shading controversy for most of the fanbase. Plus, there are people who actually love MM- many who call it their favorite Zelda, for example, while I've known very few people who call WW their favorite Zelda.

I don't think the FFIX comparison is bad for MM, and it doesn't really apply anyway (don't think there's any FF that WW maps to well). FFIX should be the 5th strongest FF game after all, and being the #5 Zelda game (after OOT, LTTP, TP, and Zelda 1) should be enough for MM to beat WW. Or at least, MM and WW should be close.

There really isn't much poll evidence on this one, so I'll just trust my instincts, which are generally correct with fanbases I know well, and go with MM.

I have no idea why anybody would take Super Mario Galaxy over Majora's Mask. Wind Waker...maybe, and hopefully. But for now I don't really care if Majora's Mask beats Super Mario Galaxy. I don't even care if it beats Ocarina of Time or Super Mario 64.

Yes, but it happens, and it's happened to Zelda.

I don't really know if the strength difference between Majora's Mask and Wind Waker will even be all that great. I just think it's not as well loved as we think it is because Board 8 sings its praises so much, a la FFIX.

Wii Sports...after how Soul Calibur did last year, I thought it was going to win. It still could since it's early and it's not the type of Nintendo-game to get a real board vote (especially with Umineko and even Cave Story in the poll), but I'm not impressed thus far.
