Also, for my trend charts, the names of some games have been shortened a bit to better fit into the spreadsheet.

I think the bigger issue with 3DTV is getting it so people can watch without glasses. It's possible, but it requires a precise viewing angle to get it to work, which may not always be possible, especially when you have large groups of people. The 3DS can get away with it because it's a handheld designed to be looked head-on, but you can have all kinds of different viewing angles with TV's, so unless TV manufacturers can figure out how to achieve the 3D effect in most of the possible viewing angles, I can't see this tech really take off the same way HDTV has.

Also, the bracket is up.

3D as it is now is a fad, and will probably die off once the novelty wears off (same reason why Move and Kinect will fail). There will always be a niche, but by 2012/2013, people will be sick of it.

If they can perfect the technology though, it probably will catch on.
HaRRicH | Posted 10/4/2010 9:44:34 AM | message detail
I never got the 3D-hate against just the premise of it. I can't say anything about how it may give you headaches since I've never suffered that, but people have always responded positively to better and improved special effects and it's a big step toward virtual reality, something I suspect all of us discussed as a kid wondering if we'd ever be fortunate to be a part of.

Besides, movies are responding quite well to it -- since Avatar came out December 18th last year, seven movies have been the #1 movie at theaters for twenty of the forty-two weeks we've had since then. For technology in its infancy, the market's shown that most people want it. Theaters are going to continue improving on it, which will make televisions continue to improve and the demand for the televisions increase, which will make the demand for gaming consoles to embrace it increase (especially once the 3DS hits since a handheld will already be doing it), which I think will make everything else from PCs to cell-phones start embracing it in due time. Soon, you're just not going to be able to avoid it...

...and why would you? If you weren't trained to 2D television all your life, I'd think you'd naturally want this instead of flat imagery. If South Park and other comedy-sources hadn't made such blatant comparisons with Avatar and Dancing With Wolves/Pocahontas, I really doubt it would have gotten such hate; not to say the plot's complicated /original/good, but people seem to be holding that against 3D, and that's unfair. People like Albion are still mad about how people once tried to do 3D...and yeah, there were pretty bad ways back in the day; whoever thought red-n-blue glasses were the key to 3D wasn't very good with ideas. This isn't that kind of 3D, and I can't wait to see what 3D is like without glasses.

I don't get why people are still resisting removing limitations from your screen. If you don't feel like it's ready at this time, fair enough...but if you're just against the premise of 3D, then I'm unsure why you've got a grudge against it.

Another major thing about not trusting 3D to become the standard is that we've already gone through a 3D phase like back in the 60s. It was just a fad then, why do we think it won't just be another fad now? I can understand it being a novelty, something you might want to see when going to a movie theater, but is it something people will really want to bother with every time they watch tv or play video games? I'm not so sure.

Yeah, I doubt it'll catch on, but it's a natural progression from the HDTVs we got at the beginning of the last decade. The big TV makers know they can't sell people on even higher resolutions (1080p will likely stay the standard until TVs become the size of a living room wall or something), so they've gotta innovate somewhere else.

Whoa, it's hard to believe that Avatar was only 10 months ago. Anyway, I'll like 3D when it has no glasses, and doesn't put most of the screen out of focus.

Video game consoles began as a fad too before Nintendo took off. All that needs to happen for 3D to work is to get rid of those glasses.

It takes no effort! We've been able to find out division names this way for a while now. Just have open a match from last year's contest that shows the bracket, and just occasionally refresh to see if the names have changed.

I'd actually been doing this (secretly), but alas, it was done while I was gone!
