The jury's out on Halo series strength, but I got the feeling last year that the original might be the strongest and that each subsequent release was another tiny step down. ODST and Reach may be technically better games (I have no idea) but they still won't mean as much to the series as a numbered sequel that sells millions more and generates more hype. Chief's arc is apparently over (once again, I have no idea), and Bungie is leaving the series. Halo will also sink, just at a slower rate than old Chief. Halo
Reach is Halo 4 without the number. It'll put up the numbers of a
normal Halo game -- it's not some side project or anything. Reach is
the real deal as far as sequels (it prequel, in this case) go. --- There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign. |

Games
2009 would have had a normal time frame if Allen was allowed to start
it when he wanted. We were really really close to having that contest

I'm
partly basing it on the last one. ODST also had a big marketing
campaign and sold millions, but it didn't have Chief or a number in the
title, and it looked awful in the GotY. Any of the three main Halos
would destroy it, while they'd all likely go near 50/50 with each
other. Reach may do a bit better, but there's no way it can reverse the

was the wait for that one so long, anyway? GotY polls end in
mid-January, yet we didn't start until April? I can barely even

You shouldn't be basing it off ODST, because ODST was
a side game -- it was an expansion pack to Halo 3 created by a small
team. Reach, in every meaningful way, is the next big Halo game --it's
also Bungie's last. It's a brand new engine, a story that connects to
the main trilogy, and looks like it'll be the best one since the
original. It's not a side project, and if any Halo game cam reverse the
series' fortunes on this site, it'll be Reach. This will be as popular,
and sell as well, as any numbered game. The main character isn't what

Arkham Asylum to be a little stronger than GTAIV here we come. Speaking of which, Grand Theft Auto IV, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, BioShock, Halo 3, which one is strongest (no I don't mean if the three were against each other in a 3-way, the winner would be obvious)? |

ODST
had Halo 3's multiplayer, while Reach's is brand new and overhauled.
Dunno if Reach would match the mainline Halo's, but it certainly
wouldn't embarrass like ODST. It did alright in the September poll, at
any rate. Anyway, CoD4 vs Pac-Man is a horrible example and nobody in their right mind would pick Pac-Man in that situation. CoD4 is pretty damn strong, while Pac-Man coasts on name recognition, which is why it can stand out in the older divisions against ancient fodder. And echoing what everyone else already said, generational divisions are horrible. It screwed us out of a FF7/OoT final in 2004, it screws us out of a lot of interesting matches between old and new (I'd really love to see SMB3 or World kick some new-game asses), and it'd help get rid of the old-school fodder in favor of more strong games from recent eras. Anyway, Pac-Man vs Halo? Interesting, but I'd probably take Halo there. I mean, would you take Pac-Man over Starcraft? And that was with lots of rallying and people looking for that 16 > 1 upset. I don't think Pac-Man could pull it off there, no matter how anti-voted Halo is. Plus a possible Reach boost can't hurt Halo. Now, Pac-Man vs Master Chief, on the other hand, I could see Pac-Man winning that. Hell, give it a few more years, and I could see Guybrush Threepwood beating Master Chief. I mean, he did avoid the quadrupling against Vincent and all! --- Wylvane shadosneko is a horrible user. |

Pac-Man
has little chance against Master Chief. When he's not being SFF he's
only a low midcard, the guy isn't touching characters like Hayabusa and
Sub-Zero. I wouldn't mind if Bacon took the Top 2 or 4 and made an ultimate bracket with FF7, OoT, and maybe CT or LttP or SMB3/World/64 or whatever. Anyone thing the next game contest will include a Tournament of Champions like 2k5 did? --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |

The contest is stacked, but we don't have the top 2, two of the leading candidates for #3 (RBY and LttP) or half of the rest of the Top 10. What would be stacked (and also really awful) would be a Nintendo only games contest. This field will be solid but other than FFX and the two SSBs, there are no or actual powerhouses in this competition. Personally, I think this contest is here for the same reason as we had the Villains contest. Give someone else a win so we can create a new Games Contest, no restrictions but with FFVII, OoT and the winner of this in a ToC and we'll have that contest Spring or Summer of 2012. --- Potential theory? |

yeah,
the entire main event scene is missing, so another contest without the
top 2 and this year's champ, ooh boy, r/b/y vs lttp, or perhaps SM64
manages to win out of left field, tons of cool stuff could happen. heck i think SMW could beat FFX which will be a super powerhouse this contest. though a contest with no gen split without FFVII/OOT/Winner of this, oh man. the upper tier of the 90s vs the top tier of this decade, toss in Starcraft, goldeneye, FFVI/VIII, Metal Gear Solid against the TPs, MGS4, RE4 or Kingdom Heart II, man the number of potential classic 1 vs 1 one matches. --- Nyoro~n |

obviously post ToC which should be 2-3 years down the line, w/e games
contest comes after should in all honesty be a traditional 1 vs 1 no
gen divide contest, i mean surely 5 years from now OOT will not be as
strong. i mean every game's dream hope so far was to wait for FFVII to get too old to be strong, we can do the same for OOT right, just wait for it to get old and musty and so dated than most of the voters weren't born when it came out.....though that may already be the case. --- Nyuu~ |

don't really mind that we don't have LttP or RBY at this point. I mean,
if we have an entire contest like Division 128 (and the modern game
divisions were the best ones in the last Games Contest, too), then this

honestly willing to say we've got like five or six. Anything outside
FFX/Smash is a dark horse, but I'm not willing to write off games like

to agree with everyone else here. SB's doing this because he knows
it'll be fun (based on Div 128 and the bottom quarter of the last Games
bracket), but also because it gives him the perfect justification for a

It
feels wrong to put the winner of this contest in a ToC, as it probably
won't be #3 like Sephiroth was and certainly won't be far and away
above the rest of the field like Sephiroth was. But bracket-wise, it

the weakest entrant in the contest, but if it gets in it could contend
for weakest entrant ever, even with massive blowouts being harder than

Umineko
would be weak, but it wouldn't be Tanner-esque. If nothing else, it
would be guaranteed to get some sort of anime-ish picture, and probably
